World record achieved at Joburg 2010 Stamp Show
New Guinness World Record holder of the largest stamp mosaic unveiled at the Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show. The Sandton Convention Centre was a hive of activity with the opening ceremony of the Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show, which saw the unveiling of the new Guinness World Record holder for the largest stamp mosaic.
The mosaic, which towers at 27 meters wide by six metres high, officially holds the Guinness World Record for the largest stamp mosaic. The mosaic was assembled through the collaboration between The South Africa Post Office and Hatfield Tuition College (HTC), and features all proudly South African Stamps. The new record holder features the Tshwane skyline, and was completed in a record four weeks by 115 volunteers. The previous record holder was completed over three years by 300 volunteers.
The official ceremony was opened by Ms Motshoanetsi Lefoka, Group CEO of the South African Post Office, along with international delegates and philatelists. The ceremony also marked the official launch of Republic of South Africa’s 8th definitive stamp issue – “The Beads”. The Joburg 2010 International Stamp Show will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre until Sunday, 31 October with free entry to the public.The Stamp Show features the 26th Asian International Stamp Exhibition – a first for the continent, with over 300 quality exhibits from stamp enthusiasts.
Highlights include an exceptional Court of Honour featuring a selection of the Queen Elizabeth II collection, for which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has given personal approval. The Royal Selection will be accompanied by the Keeper of the Royal Collection Mr. Michael Sefi.
