Mahatma Gandhi on new Serbian Stamp

150 Years since the Birth of Mahatma Gandhi

Date of Issue : 28 February 2019

Serbia Post will issue a commemorative stamp on 28th February to mark 150 years since the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the leader of the Indian independence movement. With his unusual, yet powerful political instruments of Satyagraha and non-violent protest, Mahatma Gandhi inspired political leaders and human rights and freedom movements all over the world.

Mahatma Gandhi was born in a wealthy Hindu family in Porbandar (Gujarat). Even in his childhood he was acquainted with the learning about tolerance, non-hurting other people and vegetarianism. He studied law at the University in Bombay and later in London. With his family, wife and children, he spent 20 years in South Africa as an employee at a branch of an Indian company, fighting against discrimination of the Indians in Africa. As a founder of philosophy named Satyagraha – a resistance through mass, non-violent civil disobedience, he became one of the greatest political and spiritual leaders of his time.

His main goal was the fight for the independence of India which was a British colony at the time. He strived to reduce poverty, liberate women and eradicate discrimination, with the ultimate goal of India becoming an independent country. His efforts paid off when Great Britain finally declared Indian independence on 15 August 1947. Opponents of Indian independence murdered him on 30 January 1948.

The fight of Mahatma Gandhi for freedom and peace inspired human rights movements all around the world, and the United Nations established 2 October, Gandhi’s birthday, as the International Day of Non-Violence which, through education and raising of public conscience, helps spreading the message of non-violence and the wish to secure the culture of peace, tolerance and understanding.
Motif on the stamp: a portrait of Gandhi with symbolic display of the lotus flower in the background.
Motif on the vignette: charkha – a wheel for weaving cotton, a symbol of the passive resistance in India.
Artistic realization: MA Boban Savić, academic painter.

Serbia -India Joint Issue

Serbia – India Joint Issue
70 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Date of Issue :15 September 2018

The seventy-year journey of diplomatic relations based on friendship and partnership, characterized by full mutual trust and understanding between Serbia and India, began on 8 December 1948, only a year after the Republic of India became independent, crowning the struggle of Indian people and the teachings of the great Mahatma Gandhi that final victory can be won through non-violent activism, peacefully and without bloodshed.

Following the establishment of diplomatic relations, the Non-Aligned Movement was the forum where the then SFRY and the Republic of India cooperated and worked very closely, becoming important factors of international peace and stability. The words spoken by the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of the visit to Belgrade in 1955. will be remembered: “Distance dividing us vanishes in the meeting of our thoughts and the foundations have been laid for a friendship that will, I believe, be of an enduring nature”.

In the decades that ensued, a series of meetings were held, visits and letters exchanged between the top leaders, contributing to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and position of the two countries on international level. The visit to India by the then Prime Minister and the incumbent President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić to participate at the “Vibrant Gujarat Summit” in January 2017, the official visit by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić in May 2018 as well as the visit by Vice-President of the Republic of India Venkaiah Naidu to Serbia in September 2018, are an expression of unequivocal commitment of the two countries to continue along the lines of intensified bilateral dialogue and strengthening of the overall cooperation. The Republic of Serbia and the Republic of India extended a hand of friendship and solidarity to each other in the most difficult times, while the respect of international law and principles of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states constitute a common ground of the foreign policy of both countries.

Indian theme on foreign stamps

“JOY OF EUROPE”  stamp designed by Indian child

image

Here is a new stamp featuring Joy of Europe, designed by an Indian child. The stamp will be issued by Serbia Post on 2nd October 2015.

Children are our future, happiness and joy therefore we cherish and care about these cute little creatures. Serbia Post introduced a great stamp issue that celebrates “JOY OF EUROPE” – one of those events that underline the importance of our future generation.

image

“JOY OF EUROPE” is the biggest and the oldest international event of children’s creativity, organized ever since 1969 on the occasion of the Children’s Day. Every year at the beginning of October the children from a range of European countries come to Belgrade to dance, sing, act, display their works of art, but first of all, make friends and have a good time. There is almost no European country whose children have not been here as a guest at this 46-year long event “Joy of Europe”.

A part of “Joy of Europe” since 1998 has been the international art competition under the same name, with the topic always being “The Dictionary of Friendship”. A great writer and children’s friend Duško Radović put together fifteen universal symbols (child, Europe, bread, play, book, love, mother, peace, father, song, friend, bird, joy, freedom, sun) connecting children all around the world by dancing, singing and finally by image.

For the fourteenth time since its foundation, the exhibition of the International Art Competition presents the most successful works of young artists from Serbia and abroad who with their colourful palette of artwork make the international event Joy of Europe even more beautiful. Every year, the prized works evidence the authenticity of visual culture of childhood, developing sensibility of both the audience and the professional public for this form of artistic expression.

At the contest, the children works are divided into five categories for children between five and eighteen. Over the time, the contest expanded much beyond the boundaries of Europe, bringing together children and youth from the entire world. The best works find their place also on the special issue stamp “Joy of Europe”.

This year, the work of ten-year-old child from India, Dhanui Mihirbhai Doshi, the winner of the art competition, is used as a template for the art solution of the stamp. The art work of six-year-old Konstatin Krnjić from Serbia, found its place on a vignette, and as a motif on the envelope are also shown the works of Alice Panchal (5 years) from Australia, Tomaš Kaleja (13 years) from Slovakia, Lora Muteva (10 years) from Bulgaria and Tomaš Bilý (13 years) from Slovakia.

New stamps on Year of Horse….

image image

Here is new  stamp  on the Year of the Horse from Serbia. The first stamp shown above is one of the best stamps on year of horse stamps issued so far. The design is exquisite.

The year 2014, as the Year of the Horse covers the period from 31st January 2014 to 28th February 2015. The 2014. is the Year of the Wood Horse. The last Year of the Horse was in 1954 as the repetition cycle of the same combination of sign and element occurs every 60 years. The Year of the Horse occurs every 12 years but the Year of the Wood Horse every 60 years.

That’s why all the people born in 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 should work on what they really want, because in 2014 it will be easier to accomplish than usual.

General characteristics of people born under the sign of the Horse are: activity, energy, independence, freedom loving, have style and good taste, give all for love. Patience is not their strong suit. He wants to wildly gallop towards the obstacles, without looking neither left nor right. The Wood Horse is as volatile as the other Horse, but it has better control, and better sense of discipline and is ready for reasonable discussion.
