Senses

This issue – consisting of five stamps and a block with a sixth stamp – is a consequence of a proposal made by the Universal Postal Union to celebrate the birth bicentenary of Louis Braille (1809-1852), the inventor of a system that combines embossed dots and which is applied to reading, writing, calculation and music for the blind.

On the block, produced in cooperation with the Portuguese Association for the Blind and Partially Sighted (Associação de Cegos e Amblíopes de Portugal – ACAPO), all the information appears repeated in Braille characters and on the limited space of the stamp, the word Braille can also be read in both types of characters. The remaining stamps of this issue are dedicated to each of the five senses, allowing for experiencing real physical interaction: the touch feels the embossed ink coming out of the tube; the smell receives the aroma of the cup of coffee; the sight detects holographic images on the spectacle lenses that change according to the position of the stamp; the taste identifies the flavor of vanilla on the glue of the stamp that shows an ice-cream; the ear is sensitive to the noise made by the file when you rub its rough surface.

Made up of different nerve cells that capture variations and respond to stimuli, according to present science the sense organs comprise not only the classical five senses described by the ancient but other senses as well, such as cold and heat, balance and pain, contact and pressure. However, it is not the aim of this issue to underline theoretical statements, but rather to contribute to modernity in communication. Thus, thanks to improved technology in graphical arts, a set of elements, which is usually absent in common stamps, has been incorporated in this collection, becoming a differentiating fact in this emission and imparting an innovative character to stamps in the landscape of contemporaneous philately.

Louis Braille

It is an exciting experience to run your fingers over a piece of paper that informs in detail. That’s what blind and visually-impaired people around the world are able to do thanks to Louis Braille, the inventor of the ingenious system used by blind people to read and write. At the age of sixteen (in 1825) he developed a system of characters with six raised dots which can be variously combined to represent the whole alphabet. The invention represented a real breakthrough on the path of knowledge, education, and self-assertion of millions of blind and visually-impaired across the world.

Louis Braille was born on 4 January 1809 in Coupvray, France, to the family of a harness maker. He was the youngest of four children. When he was just over three years old, he unfortunately lost his sight while playing in his father’s workshop. Louis Braille died on 6 January 1852 in Paris.

As a sign of the French society’s gratitude, his ashes were deposited in the Panthéon in Paris, a place of last repose for the greatest men and women of France. Several years ago, the Society of Friends of Louis Braille turned his birth house in Coupvray, located about 35 km from Paris, into a museum.

New stamp on Louis Braille

Date of Issue - 4 November 2009

Hi ! Here is the latest stamp issued by Vatican City on 4th November in honour of Louis Braille to celebrate his 200 Birth Anniversay .The stamp features a portrait of Braille and his system's raised dots that spell out Braille, Vatican City State and the price. The French creator of the writing and reading system for the blind, was born in France in 1809 and lost his sight at an early age. He then developed a reading and writing system based on patterns of raised dots that allow blind people to recognize the alphabet with the tips of their fingers. The Vatican post office has issued it's first ever Braille stamp to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille. I have written about other stamps issued earlier this year in my previous Posts. This stamp will be a new addition in the collection of those collecting worldwide stamps on Louis Braille. This is all for Today....Till Next Post....Have a Great Time !

Louis Braille
Two hundred years ago in Coupvray, near Paris, Louis Braille was born. At the age of four he became blind after an accident. Despite this physical challenge, at the age of ten he started going to school. Given that he could not attend an ordinary school, he was accepted at the Institution des Jeunes Aveugles (Institute for the Blind in Paris) where the Hauy method for teaching the blind was used, a system which did not allow for writing. At the age of only 18, Braille became a teacher at the Institute. Two years later he developed a simpler and more intuitive learning method compared to the Hauy method. This new method included a system for writing using a combination of six raised dots representing every letter of the alphabet. Later he expanded the system to include musical notation with a method of translating the symbols into musical notes. Two years after his death France adopted his system, and at the World Congress of Education for the Blind held in Paris in 1878 it was declared a universal method.

New Stamp on Braille by San Marino

Date of Issue - 16 June 2009

Hi ! Here is the most recent stamp featuring Braille issued by San Marino on 16 June 2009. The Republic of San Marino remembers Louis Braille on the 200th anniversary of his birth, with a philatelic issue of € 1,50, where the image turns into a unique chromatic game between the artistically coloured inscription BRAILLE and the raised dots of the same word. This stamp is very unique as compared to the earlier issues by other countries. Louis Braille is the most popular personality with the stamp collectors this year. Hope the readers would like this stamp very much. This is all for today !.....Till Next Post .....Have a Nice Time !....

200th Anniversary of Louis Braille's Birth
It was the year 1812 when a three-year-old French boy, Louis Braille (Coupvray, 4th January 1809 – Paris, 6th January 1852), injured his left eye playing in his father's workshop. At the age of four he became blind. At ten, his parents sent him to the Royal Institution for Blind Youths in Paris, one of the first schools in the world for blind children, where he learnt how to read large, raised letters. Very soon he became an able organist and a teacher in the same institute. Through teaching, he came to understand the vast learning difficulties for people who couldn't rely on sight for reading or writing, leading him to devise a reading system for the blind: an alphabet based on the use of six raised dots in two columns of three dots each, enclosed in small rectangles of about 4x7 mm in size, thus forming 64 combinations, sufficient enough to represent all the letters of the alphabet, punctuation signs, and with some adroitness, numbers and mathematical symbols. The tactile alphabet which Louis Braille invented in 1829, a raised-dot system (later perfected by Foucault), has permitted all blind people to read and write independently and to communicate amongst themselves, helping to break down that social barrier which kept visually handicapped people isolated from society, once and for all. In 1952, his remains were laid to rest in the Paris Pantheon, in memory of his work for humanity.
