Stamps on Winter Olympic 2014 Medal Winners

image image

Here are new stamps from Latvia featuring Winter olympic medal winners of Latvia. These  are good collecting items for sports and Olympic themes.

Latvijas Pasts, in collaboration with sports federations and the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC), has released four stamps and a special envelope, dedicated to Latvian medal winners in the XXII Olympic Winter Games, which took place earlier this year.

image image

The Olympic stamps have been released in honor of the Latvian champions in the XXII Olympic Winter Games: skeleton racer Martins Dukurs who won a silver medal, bobsleigh team consisting of Oskars Melbārdis, Daumants Dreiškens, Arvis Vilkaste and Jānis Strenga who also claimed silver, Andris Šics and Juris Šics who earned a bronze medal in the luge doubles competition and Elīza Tīruma, Mārtiņš Rubenis, Andris Šics and Juris Šics who won a second bronze medal for Latvia in the luge team relay competition.

Latvijas Pasts has been issuing stamps dedicated to Latvian Olympic medal winners since the XXVII Olympic Summer Games, which took place in Sydney, Australia in 2000. The XXII Olympic Winter Games, which were held from February 7 to February 23, 2014 in Sochi (Russia), are considered to be the most successful Winter Games in Latvia, resulting in an unprecedented number of medals won in three different sports: one silver in skeleton, one silver in bobsleigh and two bronzes in luge. Overall, Latvia was represented in seven winter sports: biathlon, bobsleigh, ice hockey, luge, skeleton, skating and skiing.

Stamp of Genuine Porclain

image

Austria Post  issued a stamp of genuine porcelain on 20th March 2014. The stamp features “Viennese Rose” . This innovative stamp is from Austria Post’s "Classic Brands" series .

image

For the production of a stamp made of porcelain both its own process as well as a special tool needed to be developed , because only then the production of the relatively large number of stamps could be produced in the given time. Since the usual molds of plaster only about thirty times can be used , the stamps were not made by casting with casting material , but with amore solid form (" rotational mass " or " press material " ) is used . Subsequently, the sheets were baked in the porcelain so-called first firing at 960 degrees Celsius for 24 hours , then glazed and again cured at even higher temperature . In the Austrian porcelain manufactury , the pieces are always painted by hand. That would not have been possible in a this case because of the large number (150000 nos.) and the lack of time . Therefore, the most expensive and highest quality printing method was used: the screen printing. To ensure color fastness and contrast this special stamp made of porcelain, the colors were eventually "burned " at 820 degrees Celsius.

Pioneers of Winter Sports

image

Date of Issue  : 3 February 2014

Canada Post issued a set of 3 stamps featuring Pioneers of Winter sports .

In a year when Canadians will be focused on winter sports excellence, Canada Post is shining the light on three history-makers and record-breakers. Each woman honoured in this set of stamps has changed the face of her sport and left an indelible mark on the memories of her fans.

Louis Gagnon, Creative Director and Partner with Montreal’s Paprika, explains that the three stamps were designed to have a classic memorial look. “The illustrations represent the athletes in full action, which contrasts with the simplicity of the design,” he says.

“The vibrant, powerful style reflects the prowess of the three champions. The setting features an element that reminds us of the athlete’s sport – and the colour scheme is influenced by the colours of the Olympic logo.”
