WSSB Employees Association commemorated this event by releasing a special cover on International Women's Day 2018

 U.R.Rao - Archiect of India's Science Programme

Prof Udupi Ramachandra Rao, born in the year Neutron was discovered, went on to become the nucleus of India's Space Programme. As one who strongly believed in 'Science for the Society', it is not at all surprising that early space missions focused on weather forecasting, telecommunication and prospecting the rich natural resources of India, As Chairman of ISRO as well as of Space Commission, Prof Rao indigenously built the necessary rockettechnology for all the space missions. This spirit continues to this day.
In recognition of his monumental work, the Government of India awarded the prestigious 'Padma Bhushana' in 1976 and the 'Padma Vibhushana' in 2017.

New Stamps on Flowers..

Date of Issue : 4 March 2016

Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp featuring Water Lily in the  Flowers series on 4th March 2016. The design of the FDC is excellent. A nice  collecting item, for all stamp lovers.

Water lilies are considered by many to be the jewels of the pond. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they also serve an important purpose in the pond, mainly in aiding its ecosystem. Water lilies spread across the water‘s surface, filling it with color and vibrancy all the while keeping the pond and the creatures in it safe and healthy.
Water lily is one of the most magnificent aquatic plants. It can impress anyone with its beauty and diversity. Water lilies are large plants with big floating, long-stalked leaves that grow in water and wetlands. The flowers are large and solitary. Pollination occurs either by insects or by self-pollination.
Water Lily is the seventh stamp in the series Flowers, which was launched in 2010 by Latvijas Pasts. The first release in the series was Peony, which was followed by Rose, Lily, Iris, Tulip and Sunflower.

Symbolic bouquet of flowers for women…

Date of Issue : 8 March 2016

The postage stamp issue “Flowers’ Alphabet (II) CU DRAG (With Love)” is dedicated this year to March 8th, the International Women’s Day.

In different regions of the globe the March 8th festivities range from a general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for their economic, political and social achievements. International Women’s Day has had various interpretations over the years. The version that is celebrated now has its origin in 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited all member states to proclaim March 8th as Women’s Rights and World Peace Day.

On this occasion, Romfilatelia offered to all the ladies a symbolic bouquet of flowers. Each of the stamps of this issue depicts a head letter intertwined with a flower, the entire issue forming the words “CU DRAG” (With Love).

The stamp with the face value of Lei 1.20 illustrates the letter C of Chrysanthemum (lat. Chrysanthemum hortorum).

Chrysanthemums, also called autumn daisies, belong to the genus Chrysanthemum, featuring over 30 species of perennials belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Asia and northeastern Europe. The flowers are solitary or grouped in multiple inflorescences. The flowers of the spontaneous species are yellow; even the name chrysanthemum is derived from the Latin words chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower). The cultivated species have a multitude of shapes and colours ranging from white, yellow to various shades of red, green or purple.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 1.40 illustrates the letter U of “Urechelnita”, the common houseleek (lat. Sempervivum tectorum).

Its name does not betray the beauty and utility of the plant. In Europe, it grows in among the spontaneous flora but is also widely cultivated for its ornamental and curative nature. In Romania it’s found in rocky limestone areas, but it’s also cultivated and even preferred for growing on green roofs in some rural areas. Fleshy leaves grow from the stem, thick and very juicy, arranged in a rosette, with sharp peaks. They are used in various household remedies both internally and externally.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 1.60 illustrates the letter D of Dahlia (lat. Dahlia variabilis).

The Dahlia genus includes over 15 species of perennials and is native to Central and North America. Its cultivation in Europe began in the Royal Gardens of Madrid, the director of the gardens naming the plant in honor of the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, who brought the plant from America. The flowers are grouped in inflorescences of various colors. The plant is multiplied by tubers.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 4.50 illustrates the letter R of “Ruscuta de primavara”, yellow pheasant’s eye (lat. Adonis vernalis).

The species grows in Europe and Asia; in our country it can be found on steep hills, in pastures and sunny hayfields, from the plains to the mountains. The leaves are deeply divided, like those of dill. The flowers are golden yellow and shiny. It is considered a poisonous plant, but with curative properties for heart disease.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 8 illustrates the letter A of Azalea (lat. Rhododendron japonicum).
Azaleas are a group of shrubs that belong to the genus Rhododendron. Its name derives from the Greek words rhódon (rose) and déndron (tree). The plant is attractive both by size and composition of the flower, which can be simple or with multiple petals, and also by its vivid color tones and shades from dark red or purple to pink and white. The azalea is widespread in regions with mild winters and moderate summers except Africa and South America.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 16 illustrates the letter G of Gladiola (lat. Gladiolus hybridus).

The Gladiolus genus contains over 250 species spread throughout Asia, Europe and South Africa. Gladiolas are related to irises, both having an elongated shaft sharpen toward the peak, in the form of a sword. Even its name is derived from the Latin word for sword, gladius. Its flowers grow in the form of a blade, with a wide range of colors.

Romfilatelia thanks The Romanian Academy Institute of Biology for the documentary support offered in the creation of this postage stamp issue.

New Stamp from India - Women Empowerment

 Women Empowerment

Date of release : 2 September 2015

Minister of Communication & IT Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad released commemorative stamps  on “Women Empowerment” in New Delhi on Wednesday 2nd September 2015.

Empowering women to participate fully in economic life across all sectors is essential to build stronger economies, achieve internationally agreed goals for development and sustainability, and improve the quality of life for women, men, families and communities. United Nations Development Program (UNDP) focuses on gender equality and women’s empowerment not only in term of human rights, but also because they are a pathway to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development.

The principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive principles. The Constitution not only grants equality to women but also empower the State to adopt measure of positive discrimination in favour of women.

Within the framework of a democratic polity, our laws, development policies, plans and programmes, have aimed at women’s advancement in different spheres. The National Commission for Women was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1990 to safeguard the rights and legal entitlements of women. The 73rd and 74th Amendments (1993) to the Constitution of India have provided for reservation of seats in the local bodies of Panchayats and Municipalities for women, laying a strong foundation for their participation in decision making at the local levels.

Even though the women’s movement and a wide-spread network of non- Government Organizations, which have strong grass-roots presence and deep insight into women’s concerns, have contributed towards inspiring initiatives for the empowerment of women, there still exist a wide gap between the goals enunciated in the Constitution, legislation, policies plans, programmes, and related mechanisms on the one hand and the situational reality of the status of women in India, on the other.

A holistic approach to women’s health which includes both nutrition and health services requires to be pursued where attention needs to be given to the needs of women and the girl at all stages of the life. The reduction of infant mortality and maternal mortality, which are sensitive indicators of human development, continues to be a priority concern.

The Department of posts organized a nation-wide competition inviting entries for the designs of commemorative postage stamps on the theme “Women Empowerment”. Based on selected entries, a set of four stamps and a miniature sheet on the theme was released by Hon’ble Minister of Communication & Information Technology Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad on 2nd September 2015

Date of Issue : 20 March 2015

The three day International Conference titled “India & the Indian Ocean: Renewing the Maritime Trade & Civilisational Linkages”, was inaugurated by Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs along with Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik and Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the chief patron of the conference and Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas on 20th March 2015 at Bhubaneshwar.

On the occasion an exhibition 'Indian Ocean - The Seafaring Legacy' was also organized that touched upon all the points of civilization linkages and marks the celebration of 1000 years of coronation of Rajendra Chola I. The exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Ashok Chandra Panda, Hon’ble Minister, Tourism and Culture, Government of Odisha and Sri Arindam Mukherjee, Secretary, ISCS.

LL

Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs and Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik jointly released the commemorative stamp on ‘Indian Ocean and Rajendra Chola I’ during the inauguration function on 20th March 2015 at Bhubaneshwar. The stamp is  of Rs 5 denomination  and depicts the ocean and a statue of the king who was extremely powerful and reigned most of South East Asia in the early 11th century. The stamp also commemorates the 1000th anniversary of the coronation of ancient Tamil King Rajendra Chola I.

The Indian Ocean is the third largest of the world's oceanic divisions, covering approximately 20% of the water on the Earth's surface. It is bounded by Asia on the north, on the west by Africa, on the east by Australia, and on the south by the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, by Antarctica). Although generally assumed to be named for India, early European writers referred to the "East Indian" Ocean, the East Indies being the name given by European travelers collectively to India, South East Asia and the Indonesian archipelago.

Rajendra Chola I (Rajendra Chola the Great) was the son of Rajaraja Chola I and considered one of the greatest rulers and military leaders of the Indian Tamil Chola Empire. He succeeded his father in 1014 CE as the Chola emperor. During his reign, he extended the influences of the already vast Chola Empire up to the banks of the river Ganges in north India and across the ocean. Rajendra’s territories extended, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and he successfully invaded the territories of Srivijaya in Malaysia, Southern Thailand and Indonesia in South East Asia with his fleet of ships. Inscriptions and historical sources assert that the Medieval Chola king Rajendra Chola I sent a naval expedition to Indochina, the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia in 1025 in order to subdue Srivijaya.

International Women’s Day

8 March – International Women’s Day

image

International Women's Day (IWD), also called International Working Women's Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political, and social achievements.

In 2015, International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March, will highlight the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realizing women’s rights. While there have been many achievements since then, many serious gaps remain.

This is the time to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilize all people to do their part. The Beijing Platform for Action focuses on 12 critical areas of concern, and envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.

To this end, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is the clarion call of UN Women’s Beijing+20 campaign “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!” Join governments and activists across the world in commemorating the ground-breaking Conference of 1995. We celebrate the many achievements that have come since then and galvanize action to address the gaps that still remain in making gender equality a reality.
