Europa 2019 Theme - National Birds

National Birds

Isle of Man - Stonechat

Date of Issue : 12 February 2019

Europa stamps, bearing the official logo, are issued every year by the members of PostEurop, the trade association which represents the interests of European public postal operators. Aiming to build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals, EUROPA stamps are eagerly sought after by collectors around the world. Each year a theme is set for members to interpret and illustrate on a set of stamp.

The theme of this year's Europa stamps is " National Birds".Here are images of new stamps to be issued by Postal Administrations of Isle of Man, Liechtenstein and Jersey.

Liechtenstein : Golden Eagle

Date of Issue : 4 March 2019

As Liechtenstein does not have a national bird of its own, Philately has decided to depict the impressive golden eagle and is presenting it with the two motifs “Golden Eagle Approaching” and “Golden Eagle on the Lookout” (face value: CHF 1.50 each) as a combined print on a small sheet of 10 stamps.
Owing to Liechtenstein’s small size and the home range of around 50 square kilometres that a golden eagle maintains, the country only has a few pairs of these birds of prey. The king of the air as the bird is also often called has dark brown feathers with a lighter golden brown head and neck. It has a wingspan of more than two metres and its prey includes mammals, birds and carrion. Golden eagles usually live in the open space of mountains above the tree line but in the winter it will also forage for prey in lower regions. A pair of golden eagles has different eyries that they alternate in using for their broods. In contrast to other birds, the voice of the golden eagle is rarely heard.

New Stamps on Christmas

Christmas Jumpers

Date of Issue : 19 September 2018

Jersey Post will issue a beautiful set of stamps  featuring Christmas Jumpers on 18th November 2018.

The origins of the Christmas jumper can be traced back to the brilliantly distinctive nineteenth century Scandinavian fishermen sweaters. By the middle of the 20th Century, these sweaters were popularised by skiers, who needed appropriately warm skiwear. By the 1970s, the knitwear was associated with Christmas and since then,  love for the festive jumper has only increased as the look was brought into  homes by television personalities in the 1980s. Christmas jumpers, with both novelty and traditional designs, are now a must-have in the build up to Christmas. People wear them at home as well as at schools and workplaces, often on special 'Christmas jumper days'. Even the staff at Jersey Post wear Christmas jumpers in December as part of the festive celebrations and to raise money for local charities. The charitable practice of wearing Christmas jumpers is now commonplace around the world and the largest organised charity event is the Save The Children's Christmas Jumper Day which, in 2017, raised over £4million.

Eight stamps have been designed with a knitted background effect and cut-out neckline to give the impression of a folded Christmas Jumper.

200 Years of Kaleidoscope

Date of Issue : 10 July 2017

Here is a beautiful miniature sheet issued by Jersey Post featuring 200 Years of Kaleiodoscope. The kaleidoscope was invented in 1816 by Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster, and the patent was granted in 1817. Whereas the instruments themselves have become simplified and mass-produced in modern times, fascination remains constant some 200 years on. Six stamps feature intricate, symmetrically designed illustrations, in homage to the curious beauty of kaleidoscope patterns that have captivated people for 200 years. Each of the designs is based on a different theme, using Jersey’s abundance of flora and fauna as their subject.

An inscription on each stamp provides a clue as to what is shown. For example, the 49-penny stamp is inscribed “shells & anemones.”
The other stamps are inscribed: “feathers & eggs,” 63p; “wildflowers,” 73p; “woodlands,” 79p; “minibeasts” (insects and a spider), 90p; and “marine life,” £1.07.
Brewster (1781-1868), a Scottish physicist, actually invented the kaleidoscope in 1816. The 200th anniversary refers to the year it was patented, 1817.

Waterfowl Birds

Links with China : Waterfowl Birds

Date of Issue : 22 September 2016

Here is a beautiful set of stamps to be issued by Jersey ost on 22 September 2016. Western Europe and most of China present two ends of the same eco-zone, the Palearctic. Despite the huge distance between China and the tiny island of Jersey which is situated between mainland Great Britain and France, many species of waterfowl are common to both regions. To underline this natural connection between such different countries Jersey Post has prepared for issuing a special set of six stamps depicting gorgeous Waterfowl birds.

Waterfowl are certain wildfowl of the order Anseriformes, especially members of the family Anatidae, which includes ducks, geese, and swans. They have historically been an important food source, and continue to be hunted as game, or raised as poultry for meat and eggs and are sometimes kept as pets.
They are strong swimmers with medium to large bodies with webbed feet and a broad, flat, and somewhat rounded-tip bill. Some species dive deep for fishes or mollusks, others feed near the surface or filter through shallow bottom sediments. Some even graze on land. Most species of waterfowl are migratory. The fossil of the bird Presbyornis shows a long-legged shorebird-like form with a duck-like bill. This fossil, which is some 50 million years old, so good may suggest an evolutionary relationship between Anseriformes and shorebirds.
