Sea Trout

Here is another new postage issued by German Post under the name “Sea Trout”. The stamp contains image of sea trout – one of the most popular fish species in Europe. The issue was released on the 4^th of December.

The sea trout, also widely known as ‘white trout’ or ‘Breac Geal’ in Gaelic, can be found in rivers, loughs and estuaries throughout Ireland. Sea trout are, in fact, brown trout that have developed a taste for going to sea because of the increased availability of food. Adult sea trout are hard fighting sporting fish which can be caught by all methods in rivers and in loughs, but give particularly exciting sport to the fly fisher.

They range in size from small fish of three quarters of a pound known locally as ‘finnock’, to specimens weighing six pounds and over. They are popular with anglers because of their strong fighting qualities and the fact that they fight tenaciously all the way to the landing net. In most fisheries the first sea trout of the season are the larger individual fish which arrive in April. As the season progresses they are followed by shoals of smaller fish.

Polish Post issued a set of 8 stamps on the occasion of XXI Warsaw National Philatelic Exhibition 2014 featuring sea life with colorful fishes. The stamps have been issued in separate  magnificent sheets and the First Day Covers have been issued in 4 different designs. Thematic Collectors would love to have these items in their collection.

 

 

 

 

Marine Biodiversity…

 

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) issued stamps to highlight the Philippines as one of the world’s center of marine biodiversity. The country boosts an abundant coral reef showcasing the vast variety of marine life.The Philippine Marine Biodiversity stamps features eight (8) unique designs in triangular format which will be the first of its kind in the Philippines.

The marine species featured in the stamps are the Lemon Goby, Dragon Wrasse, Spotted Puffer, the three-spot Angelfish, the white –tailed Damsel fish, the Orange Sea Perch, the Lemonpeel Angelfish, and the electric-blue Damsel.

50th Fish Conservation Week

The Philippine Postal Corporation  issued a set of stamps to commemorate the 50^th Fish Conservation Week, featuring endangered and/or threatened marine species. These designs were taken from the winning entries of the last year BFAR’s Fish on the Red List Painting Competition.

The first stamp features a painting of a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)with a Giant Manta Ray(Manta birostris) and silhouettes of four Scalloped Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) behind it. One of the five marine turtles found in the Philippines, Green Sea Turtle or pawikan swims in sub-tropical and tropical seas. This species is Endangered under the IUCN Red List and included in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix I because of illegal trades and poaching.

The second stamp is inspired by the painting of a Dwarf Pygmy Goby (Pandaka pygmaea). Tabiosand bia in vernacular tongue, Dwarf Pygmy Goby is the smallest fish in the world by mass and are endemic in the Philippines. However its population vanished or became extinct due to heavy pollution and land reclamation projects. Dwarf Pygmy Goby is listed as €œCritically Endangered€ under International Union for Conservation of Nature or IUCN Red List.

The third stamp employs the painting depicting the largest fish in the world known as Whale Shark or €œbutanding€. Scientifically named as Rhincodon typus, Whale Shark is a migratory filter feeder that lives in all tropical and warm-temperate seas.

Endangered Flora - Fauna of Japan..

 

Wild Fauna and Flora of Japan

The Japanese Post issued a set of stamps dedicated to the theme "Living in harmony with nature". This set is dedicated to the endangered representatives of wild fauna and flora of Japan – Tokyo shrew, Golden eagle, Safflower mountain peony, Killifish and Horseshoe crab.

Tokyo shrew is one of the world's smallest mammal having size 45mm, weight 1.5g and living only in eastern Hokkaido. The Ministry of the Environment entered the Tokyo shrew in the list of wild animals in class II of extinction danger.

Golden eagle is a large eagle that inhabits the mountains from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Its population is about 650 feathers, but keeps on decreasing because of the entry of people into their land and breeding habitat. In the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment, they are classified as "highly endangered species II".

Safflower mountain peony is a plant growing in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. It has a pink flower and a stem of 30-40 cm. The main factors of its reduction are transition of vegetation and deforestation. In the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment, it has been classified as "endangered species II."

 Killifish is a freshwater fish distributed in various parts of Japan except Hokkaido. The development of paddy fields has declined significantly its habitat. In the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment it has been classified as "endangered species II."

Horseshoe crab was once widely distributed in the Seto Inland Sea and the coast of northern Kyushu, but began losing its habitat due to coastal alteration. In the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment has been classified as "endangered species I" that is in danger of extinction.

Museum of the Danube Fishing in the town of Tutrakan

The Bulgaria Post has issued a set of stamps on 29 June 2011, dedicated to the Bulgarian Danube Museum.

The Ethnographic Museum "Danube fishing and boat-building" is located in town of Tutrakan. It was opened in 1974 and is the only one along the Danube River.

The Museum preserves the rich material and spiritual culture, social structure and lifestyle of the Bulgarians from the Danube-situated fishing villages. There are exhibited original artifacts, tools and objects which were used in the past and modern instruments and equipment which is used nowadays. There can also be seen cross and ritual bread for Nikulden, photos and graphics explaining the way fishing is accomplished in the villages along the lower Danube. There is other exposition related to the boat-building which has been developed in the region since the Roman period.

The newest stamp issuing  country – South Sudan

On July 9 2011,South Sudan becomes the youngest state in the world. The UN Security Council recommended to General Assembly on July 13, 2011 that the Republic of South Sudan join the UN, bringing the new nation one step closer to becoming the body’s 193rd member state.

South Sudan, officially known as The Republic of South Sudan, is a country in East Africa. Its capital and largest city is Juba, located in the southern state of Central Equatoria. The landlocked country is bordered by Ethiopia to the east; Kenya to the southeast; Uganda to the south; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest; the Central African Republic to the west; and the Sudan to the north. South Sudan includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd formed by the White Nile, locally called the Bahr al Jabal.

  

What is now South Sudan was part of the British and Egyptian condominium of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and became part of the Republic of the Sudan when independence was achieved in 1956. Following the First Sudanese Civil War, the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region was formed in 1972 and lasted until 1983. A second Sudanese civil war soon developed and ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005. Later that year, southern autonomy was restored when an Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan was formed. South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011 at midnight (00:00) local time following a referendum held in January 2011 in which nearly 99% of voters opted for independence from the rest of Sudan.

New Currency in South Sudan

July 13, 2011 (JUBA) -  The Republic of South Sudan will officially introduce its new currency early next week.

The new currency, which are in denominations of one, five, 10, 25, 50 and 100 will be effective as of 18 July. They will be distributed amongst the population in exchange for Sudanese Pounds be given out to members of the public in exchange for Sudanese Pounds (SDG) at designated distribution centres. It is expected that the exchange rate will be 1:1.

The notes printed by the UK company, De la Ru will have a portrait of John Garang watermark.

New stamps for South Sudan

JUBA, 13 July 2011 – New postage stamps have been launched for the new Republic of South Sudan.

According to Brigadier General (Rtd) Elijah Biar Kuol, the Director General for Administration and Finance in the Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services, 100,000 copies of the stamps have already been distributed to all the states of South Sudan.

He said the focus will be in the rural areas where more than 80 percent of the citizens of the Republic of South Sudan live.
