250 Years of Bergen Philarmonic Orchestra

Norway Post issued a new stamp on music theme featuring Orchestra. Norway Post celebrates the 250th anniversary of Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Musikselskabet Harmoniens Orkester was founded in 1765, and its long history makes it one of the oldest orchestras in the world.
The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is a national orchestra and has been based out of the Grieg Hall since 1978. The orchestra, which consists of 100 musicians, holds around 80 concerts a year and is an important part of the Bergen International Festival every May. It also tours extensively and holds concerts both in Norway and internationally.
The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1765, and its long history makes it one of the oldest orchestras in the world. People from various countries flow there to feel the anxiety that can bob up in soul while listening to a classic music.
Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra has a rich discography and it has received Spellemannprisen in both 1991 and 2007.
In the past few years, more than 30 recordings with the orchestra were released, including series with music by Johan Halvorsen and Johan Svendsen.

Fryderic Chopin XVII International Pianist Competition

Polish Post issued a beautiful stamp on Music theme to commemorate International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. The FDC bears a beautiful musical note cancellation. Collectors of Music theme would love this lovely issue to include this stamp in their collection.
The International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition is one of the four biggest piano competitions in the world and the oldest one among them. Since its first edition, held in 1927, it has yielded considerable group of superstar pianists such as Marta Argerich, Krystian Zimerman or Maurizio Pollini. It takes place every 5 years in Warsaw and engages its inhabitants stronger than any other classical music related event.
The International Chopin Piano Competition, often referred to as the Chopin Competition, is a piano competition held in Warsaw, Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years since 1955. It is one of few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer, in this case, Frédéric Chopin.
The first competition was founded by the Polish pianist and pedagogue Jerzy Żurawlew. Subsequent editions were organized in 1932 and 1937; the post-war fourth and fifth editions were held in 1949 and 1955. In 1957 the competition became one of the founding members of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva.
Traditional special awards include the Polish Radio prize for the best Mazurka performance (since 1927), the Fryderyk Chopin Society in Warsaw prize for the best Polonaise (since 1960), and the National Philharmonic prize for the best performance of a Piano Concerto (since 1980). The competition is organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute of Warsaw.

Vienna Timpani – National Musical Instrument of Austria

Here is a special stamp issued by by Austria Post dedicated to the national musical instruments. This issue depicts the Vienna Timpani. Timpani, or kettledrums, are musical instruments in the percussion family. A type of drum, they consist of a skin called a head stretched over a large bowl traditionally made of copper. They are played by striking the head with a specialized drum stick called a timpani stick or timpani mallet.
Timpani evolved from military drums to become a staple of the classical orchestra by the last third of the 18th century. Today, they are used in many types of musical ensembles including concert, marching, and even some rock bands.
Stamps on great Ski Racers

Austrian Post has issued two stamps on occasion of the 75th anniversary of Hahnenkamm race and the 80th birthday of Toni Sailer – one of the best alpine ski racers. The issue has been already designed and is to be released on the 21st of January.
The Hahnenkamm is part of the ski resort of Kitzbühel, and hosts the annual World Cup alpine ski races, the Hahnenkammrennen. The Hahnenkammrennen are the annual races, held since 1931 and a fixture of the men’s World Cup since its inception in the 1967 season. The races were originally held in March, and sometimes in early February (1949 & 1951). Beginning in 1953, the races at Kitzbühel have been held in mid to late January, often the week following the Lauberhorn in Wengen, Switzerland, another classic downhill.
In 2009, as well as in 2008, the total prize money was €550,000. Anton Engelbert “Toni” Sailer was an Austrian alpine ski racer, considered among the best in the sport. At age 20, he won all three gold medals in alpine skiing at the 1956 Winter Olympics. He nearly duplicated the feat at the 1958 World Championships with two golds and a silver. He also won world titles both years in the combined, then a “paper” race, but awarded with medals by the International Ski Federation.

Permanent Pictorial Cancellation - St. Mary's Island, Malpe
St. Mary's Islands, also known as Coconut Island and Thonsepar, are a set of four small islands in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe in Udupi. They are known for their distinctive geological formation of columnar basaltic lava.
According to folk legend, in the year 1498, Vasco da Gama landed at St. Mary's Islands on his journey from Portugal, fixed a cross on the island and named one of these islands, O Padrão de Santa Maria, as a dedication to Mother Mary, before proceeding to Kozhikode in Kerala. It is from this name that the islands got their current name.

Barkur is a cluster of 3 villages (Hosala, Hanehalli, Kachoor) in Udupi district of the Karnataka. The place is located on the bank of river Seeta. It is located 16 km from Udupi.

Third day of exhibition was observed as Swasthya Diwas. A Special Cover on the Birth Centenary of Jonas Edward Salk was released. (Special Cover approval no. KTK/07/2015). Jonas Edward Salk was an American medical researcher and virologist. He discovered and developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine.

The winners of 2014 EUROPA Stamp Competition
The First Place Winner - Serbia
PostEurop announced PE Post of Serbia (Serbia-Gold), Turkish PTT (Turkey-Silver) and Hellenic Post (Greece-Bronze) as the top three winners of the 2014 EUROPA Stamp Online Competition at the PostEurop Plenary Assembly in San Marino last week.
The Second Place Winner - Turkey
In this 23rd consecutive year, 53 entries were submitted based on the theme “Musical instruments” to promote the musical and cultural aspects of every country’s traditional instrument.
The Third Place Winner - Greece
The results of this year’s online EUROPA Stamp competition were disclosed during the PostEurop Plenary Assembly in San Marino last week, in which PE Post of Serbia (Serbia), Turkish PTT (Turkey) and Hellenic Post (Greece) emerged as the top three winners respectively.
“What beautiful stamps we have at PostEurop! The theme of 2014 with musical instruments allowed the postal operators to create marvellous stamps with several different interpretations of the theme using many different printing techniques and special effects including engravings, varnishing, embossing and extra colours” exclaimed Anita Häggblom, Chair of the PostEurop Stamps and Philately working group from Posten Ǻland.
“The public votes received almost equalled to those of last year’s competition but what was remarkable to note was how close the votes were between each entry.” she added.
The first place winner Serbian stamp portrays the traditional Serbian bagpipe. A man dressed in the national folk costume is shown playing the bagpipe surrounded by the authentic landscape of Eastern Serbia in the background.

Schoolpex - 2014, 18th Inter-school Stamp Exhibition at Jaipur - 17th - 18th October 2014
18th Interschool Stamp Exhibition, Schoolpex 2014 was organised on 17th and 18th October 2014 at St Xavier's School, Jaipur. Late Shri O. P. Bhatnagar Trophy for Best School was given to BVB Vidyashram, Late Shri A S Mittal Trophy for Best in Senior Category was given to Master Vaibhav Bhatnagar of Mahaveer Public School and Late Dr. Jaya Bhargava Trophy for best in Junior Trophy was given to Master Shivam Bhargava of Hindustan International Academy.
On the occasion specially pre-approved design of ‘MY Stamp’ and MY Stamp Folders were released by Guest of Honour Shri Dushyant Mudgal. The facility of 'MY Stamp' with special My Stamp Folders was provided with 3 pre-approved design of Jain Saraswati Statue, St Xavier's School Building and Maharishi Bhrigu Statue .
Mr Rajesh Paharia, General Secretary, Philatelic Society of Rajasthan reported that it is only Stamp Exhibition in the world which is conducted annually exclusively for school students uninterrupted since last 17 years.

JPG MEET VOLUNTEERS HONORED

We had arranged a function at satnaSon 14th Oct. 2014 to honour the members of Central India Philatelic Society (CIPS) who had helped us in organizing Jainism Philately Group (JPG) Khajuraho Meet. Renowned Philatelist and Numismatic writer Shri Kishor Jhunjhunwala of Mumbai was the chief guest. He had distributed mementos, Tulsi coins and calendar to all the members. JPG Chairman and Secretary of CIPS Mr. Sudhir Jain given welcome speech and Joint Secretary Mr. Rajendra Agarwal "Shashi" given vote of thanks,. Mr. Lajpatrai, President CIPS conducted the function.
Mr. Jhunjhunwala addressing the function, told that this is not the honour of the members, but it is honour of the work you have done for Philately. CIPS members had arranged warm welcome to the JPG members at Satna Railway Station and helped in all the arrangements at Khajuraho.
