New Stamps on Charles Darwin…

DarwinFDC

Hi ! In today’s post I have to show here a set of most beautiful stamps ever issued on Charles Darwin. The set was issued last year to celebrate the Bicentenary of Charles Darwin by Vanuatu Post. But I did not get the info at that time about these beautiful stamps when I was writing about all the current issues on Charles Darwin. I wish to thank my friend Dr Eli Moallem of Israel who sent me the link of these beautiful stamps. I was overjoyed to see such an awesome issue. Though it is late but I wish to share with all of you this wonderful set of stamps, commemorating the great biologist of all times. Many stamps have been issued to commemorate Charles Darwin by several postal administrations. But in my opinion this is the best set of stamps issued in honour of this great personality. I hope every collector of Biology theme would love to have this set in his / her collection ! I highly appreciate the designer of these stamps who designed such an attractive set depicting the work of Charles Darwin in the finest way !This is all for Today ….Till Next Post….Have a Nice Time !

Bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin 1809-1882

Charles Darwin

Born in Shrewsbury, England in 1809, Charles Darwin studied at Edinburgh University and Christ’s College, Cambridge, before embarking at the age of twenty-two on a five-year journey to South America, the Galapagos Islands and beyond, aboard the HMS Beagle.

At this time, most Europeans believed that the world was created by God in seven days as described in the Bible. On the voyage Darwin read Lyell’s “Principles of Geology” which suggested that the fossils found in rocks were actually evidence of animals that had lived thousands or even millions of years ago. The animal life and geological features that he saw on the voyage reinforced Lyell’s argument and Darwin linked the fossils to modern species.
Upon his return to England, Darwin conducted thorough research of his notes and specimens and out of this long study grew several related theories:

  • Evolution did occur.
  • Evolutionary change was gradual, requiring millions of years.
  • The primary mechanism for evolution was a process called natural selection.
  • The millions of species alive today arose from a single original life form evolving through a branching process called ‘speciation’.

Darwin’s theory of evolutionary selection holds that variation within species occurs randomly and that the survival or extinction of each organism is determined by that organism’s ability to adapt to its environment. This theory of evolution by natural selection underlies all modern biology. At times controversial, the theory remains unchallenged as the central concept of biology and it profoundly altered our view of the natural world and our place in it.
2009 is both the 200th Anniversary or bicentenary of the birth of the greatest naturalist in history, Charles Robert Darwin, and the 150th Anniversary of the publication of his most famous work “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection”. Darwin’s work in the Galapagos Islands and Pacific Ocean is of great relevance to Vanuatu as it is internationally and Vanuatu Post recognises the significance of his enormous contribution to mankind.

200th Birth Anniversary of Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin is known for his position that he took on evolution. He believed that evolution occurred and that the evolutionary changes took place over millions of years. He also believed in a process called "natural selection" which is one of the current concepts of modern biology. His final theory about evolution is that all species came from a single life form. His beliefs in evolution contradicted many religious beliefs then, and still do today.

Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin FRS (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist who realised and presented compelling evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors, through the process he called natural selection. The fact that evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and much of the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory. In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, providing logical explanation for the diversity of life.

The Gibraltar Darwin 200th Anniversary issue is comprised of 4 stamps and a miniature sheet all dedicated to some of his most important books. His 1859 book 'On the Origin of Species' established evolutionary descent with modification as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. He examined human evolution and sexual selection in 'The Descent of Man', and 'Selection in Relation to Sex', followed by 'The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals'. His research on plants was published in a series of books, and in his final book, he examined earthworms and their effect on soil.

Hi ! Here is the recent stamp issued on Charles Darwin, the greatest naturalist of all time. His Bicentenary is being celebrated this year. 200 years ago on 12 February, 1809, Charles Darwin was born. Charles Darwin caused a revolution in how we see the world when he published his theory of natural selection in his book "On the Origin of the Species" in 1859. To celebrate the bicentenary of his birth Irish Stamps has issued an 82c stamp. The stamp features a pen and ink drawing of Charles Darwin by Henry Furniss. The first day cover features the Tree of Life Sketch from Charles Darwin's Transmutation Notebook 'B'. Here is the nice stamp. It's a philatelic tribute to the great naturalist. This is all for today ! ...Till Next Post.....Have a Nice Time !

Charles Darwin
Darwin was born in Shropshire, England. Having initially followed in his father's footsteps studying medicine, Darwin later transferred to Cambridge to pursue a liberal arts education. He became fascinated by natural history and botany. In 1831, his botanist friend and mentor John Stevens Henslow gave him a chance to join an expedition to South America aboard the HMS Beagle.

Darwin's discovery that mockingbirds on the Galápagos Islands were distinct from those in Chile and from island to island - was the turning point in his life. In 1859, his ideas about evolution were published in a controversial book, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection. Charles Darwin died in Kent in 1882.

New FDC on Charles Darwin.

Hi ! Here is a nice FDC on Charles Darwin with recent issues of Darwin stamps by Royal Mail. I came across this FDC through net surfing. It is different from that of issued by Royal Mail as official FDC.The cover design shows Bletchley Park Lake with the Mansion in the background. Darwin died in 1882 and Bletchley Park was built in 1883 so he would never have visited it. But Sir Herbert and Lady Leon made Bletchley Park a naturalist's delight with rare plants and trees to encourage wildlife and a well stocked lake.Sir Herbert was also a keen orchid grower and even sent gardeners on overseas trips to collect rare specimens. Its a beautiful cover and most suited for Darwin's stamps and sure to be liked by those looking for items issued on Charles Darwin. This is all for today.....Till Next Post.......Have a Nice time !......

Darwin on Australian Coin.....

Hi ! Here is the most beautiful Silver coin issued by Australia on 31 October 2008, Celebrating Darwin’s 200th birthday, this important commemorative coin also coincides with the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, which was published in 1859. The coin’s reverse depicts two portraits of Darwin. The coloured image shows him at 30, shortly after returning to England from a five-year round the world voyage aboard HMS Beagle. The observations he made and the specimens he collected, particularly while in the Galapagos Islands, led to his incredible insights. The second image is of Darwin in his 60s, around the time of his other major work, The Descent of Man. Also portrayed in the reverse is Darwin’s signature with the inscription CHARLES DARWIN 200TH BIRTHDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2009 . I hope this will be the collectible item for coin collector as well as those looking for special items , stamps and coins on Darwin.

Stamps on Charles Darwin.....

India - 18 May 1983

Hi ! This year, the 200th Birth Anniversary of greatest naturalist of all time, Charles Darwin is being celebrated. The new postage stamps have been brought out by various postal administrations to celebrate his Bicentenary. I have written about them in my previous posts. Here are stamps which were issued in past to commemorate Charles Darwin. The first stamp shown above was issued by India to commemorate his Death Centenary and the other one shown below issued by Great Britain on Darwin's Theory depicting fossil related with his theory. I have come across one more issue by Cayman Island on Biodiversity which is not on Charles darwin but its name 'Darwin's Initiative" is associated with Darwin. Well, I am pleased to collect information on stamps issued on with Charles Darwin or the stamps, somehow associated with the name of Charles Darwin. The name Charles Darwin is very familiar to those who have studied biology or are associated with Science. As I get information I would share with you. This is all for this Morning ....Till Next Post....Have a Nice Time !

Biodiversity issue associated with Darwin's name

The Cayman Islands Postal Service issued a set of stamps featuring the Cayman Islands’ biodiversity. Titled, ‘Darwin Initiative’on 9 July, 2008.This issue is a collaboration between the Postal Service and the Department of Environment and it introduces some of Cayman’s indigenous creatures. The Darwin Initiative is funded and administered by the United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It provides small financial grants to promote the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of resources around the world.A distinguishing feature of this stamp issue is the inclusion of habitats. While they are not on the stamps themselves, they comprise an important part of the issue since habitats are essential for the species to survive.

Darwin commemorated by Czech Republic

Date of Issue - 2 January 2009

Charles Darwin should be remembered not only for his theory of evolution, but also for the outstanding contributions he made to geology, soil science, experimental botany and the study of animal behavior. During his life, Darwin became known as Britain's greatest biologist as he produced several books and wrote thousands of letters commenting on many aspects of biology and geology. He kept notes on the natural history and geology of the countries he visited.

Darwin devoted years of study to collecting information about problems within various species. Furthermore, he developed explanations and mechanisms for what he considered the "transmutation of species." His Theory of Evolution is widely recognized - although he rarely used the term himself.

One of his favorite countries of study was the Galapagos Islands. This is a group of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean on the equator and 600 miles west of Ecuador. The land animals and plants that were able to colonize there in isolation have developed into new species. Not only are these species different from nearby continents, but they also exhibit differences among the various islands.

The word Galapagos means tortoise, and the giant tortoises of the various islands have become adapted to feed in different ways to exploit the available food. The tortoises were an important source of foodto passing ships as they could be kept alive for a long time aboard the ships and provided much-needed fresh meat.

Aside from the tortoise, there are two types of iguana on the Islands, the dark marine iguana and the land iguana.

The main small land birds on the islandsare a complex, inter-related group of speciesnow called "Darwin's Finches."
