Philatelic Tributes to Helen Keller

Helen Keller

27 June 1880 - 1 June 1968

Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was an author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree.

Keller was born with the ability to see and hear, but lost both senses when she was 19 months old to scarlet fever or meningitis. Over time she developed her own system of about 60 home signs. She could also identify people walking to a room by the vibrations in their footsteps.

The story of how Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, broke through the isolation imposed by a near complete lack of language, allowing the girl to blossom as she learned to communicate, has become widely known through the dramatic depictions of the play and film The Miracle Worker. Her birthplace in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, is now a museum and sponsors an annual "Helen Keller Day". Her birthday on June 27 is commemorated as Helen Keller Day in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and was authorized at the federal level by presidential proclamation by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, the 100th anniversary of her birth.

Stamps for sweet lovers - Traditional Portuguese desserts

Date of Issue : 16 May 2017

The history of Traditional Portuguese Desserts can be likened to a poem composed of words as simple as the ingredients used in the majority of recipes included in this  philatelic issue devoted to this sweet theme. These beautiful tempting stamps were issued by Portrugal Post on 16th May 2017.

Water, eggs, sugar, milk and wheat  are a starting point for many creations, transforming, in the experienced hands of  pastry chefs, into sumptuous desserts, prodigious in shape, delicate in texture and surprising in flavour. Like the best poems of simple words, through the alchemy of cooking, be it a simple chemical interaction or beautiful divine inspiration, the bringing together of these ingredients results in exceptional desserts that do not allow us to forget the places they were created and the people who made them or with whom we savour them. They penetrate our beings and we are never again able to escape from the memory of how they tasted. Just like the most beautiful poems that cause us to over flow with emotion, traditional Portuguese desserts fill our hearts with sweetness transformed into happy feelings.

Eid stamp from Canada Post

On 23rd May 2017, Canada Post  issued an Eid stamp that recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, two of the most important festivals celebrated by Muslims in Canada and worldwide.

Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month in which Muslims fast from dawn until dusk – one of the most distinctive practices of Islam. Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, falls on the first day of the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, Shawwal (around June 26, 2017, in Canada). The stamp is being issued a month ahead of Eid al-Fitr. On the day of Eid, many Muslims congregate in mosques or in open spaces, where they will perform a special ritual prayer prescribed for Eid. People dress in their finest clothes, decorate their homes with lights, give treats to children, and visit with friends and family.
Eid al-Adha
With Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, Muslims commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The festival also marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest site in Islam. It falls on the tenth day of the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul Hijjah (around September 2, 2017, depending on when the new moon is seen).
Like Eid al-Fitr, this celebration can include special ritual prayers, lavish meals, and visits with friends and family. It also includes gift-giving and acts of charity.
Design incorporates Islamic elements
The Arabic script on the stamp reads “Eid Mubarak,” which translates to “Have a happy Eid” or “Have a blessed Eid.” It appears under a pointed arch, which symbolizes the division between sacred and worldly space in Muslim culture. The stamp’s deep blues and warm gold and yellows, as well as its geometric pattern, are seen in Islamic architecture. The new moon atop the stamp signifies the start of Eid.

Centenary of Lions International

Lions International Celebrating its 100 years this year, French Post issued a stamp on 29th May to commemorate the centenary of Lions International .

Lions International 1917 - 2017

"You can not get well in your life if you do not start doing something for someone else. "Reflection made by Melvin Jones in 1917 in Chicago where he ran an insurance company. A member of one of the clubs that flourished in the city and whose members met to promote their own interests, he proposed to combine their skills and offer their availability in order to "serve Others". Thus is born this community which takes its name: LIONS, acronym of "Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation's Safety" (Freedom and understanding are the safeguard of our nations).

Its motto, "Serve", earned it a UN appointment - of which it is an advisory member - the world's leading humanitarian organization. One hundred years later, 1,400,000 members cover 210 countries and regions on five continents. In France, 27,000 members in 1,200 clubs have four main objectives:

- Safeguarding the view with the creation of the white cane, schools of guide dogs, setting up screening for eye diseases and diabetes, as well as sound libraries.

- Actions aimed at youth in difficulty, which take the form of holiday centers, cultural and educational promotion, measles eradication, participation in the Telethon since the beginning.

- Preservation of the environment through tree planting, waste recovery and well construction in Africa.

- Finally, the fight against hunger with the collection of food for the Food Bank.A total of 1.5 million hours of "self-giving" and a € 20 million harvest are provided by the Lions de France annually.

In July 2017, Lions of the World will meet in Chicago to celebrate their centenary with the challenge of saving 100 million people worldwide during the year! A challenge within their reach.
