Bats on new stamps from Slovenia

Date of Issue : 25 September 2014

Slovenia Post issued a set of 3 stamps  and a miniature sheet  featuring bats on 25th September 2014.

AUNA – Bats
Bechstein’s bat – Myotis bechsteinii (Kuhl, 1818)
Bats are the only mammals to have a wing membrane that allows true flight. The membrane is stretched between the digits of the forelimbs, the body, the hind legs and the tail and forms a special flying organ. Bats have also developed an effective echolocation system based on high-frequency sound which enables them to orient themselves in space and hunt food in the darkness.

Bechstein’s bat belongs to the vesper bat family (Vespertilionidae), which lack the enlarged nose-leaf of other echolocating bats. It folds its wings along its body when at rest. Another characteristic of Bechstein’s bat are its big ears, which are more than 2 cm long and have a long, narrow tragus with a pointed tip. Like other bats, Bechstein’s bat is endangered and its distribution and numbers are shrinking. The reason for this is a lack of suitable roosts, the use of poisons in the environment, lack of food and light pollution. Bechstein’s bat is a forest species that roosts in hollow trees. In commercial forests with few old trees, we can help bats by installing bat boxes.

Lesser horseshoe bat – Rhinolophus hipposideros (Bechstein, 1800)

Bats of the horseshoe bat family (Rhinolophidae) have a horseshoe-shaped nose-leaf, a special fold of skin, around the nostrils. Four species of horseshoe bats live in Slovenia. The lesser horseshoe bat is the smallest
of them. It is found in central and southern Europe and in northern Africa. Its body is between 3.5 and 4.5 cm long, its tail measures 2 cm, its wingspan is around 20 cm and it weighs between 5 and 9 g. It has a grey-brown back and a lighter, white-grey belly. The ears are large, pointed and have no tragus. When the bat hangs from the ceiling, it is entirely wrapped in its wings and is around 10 cm long. In summer it roosts in buildings, frequently church bell towers or attics, while in winter it hibernates in caves, cellars or mineshafts. The lifespan of the lesser horseshoe bat is usually around four years but in some cases it can live up to 30 years. The lesser horseshoe bat is another endangered and protected species. We can help it by keeping openings clear in buildings and caves to allow them to fly in and out, by not illuminating their roosts at night and by not disturbing them during hibernation in caves and other places.

Kuhl’s pipistrelle – Pipistrellus kuhlii (Kuhl, 1819)

Kuhl’s pipistrelle is a medium-sized species of bat from the vesper bat family (Vespertilionidae), which, with more than 300 species (25 of which are present in Slovenia), is the largest family of bats in the world. Vesper bats do not have a nose-leaf and when at rest fold their wings along their body instead of wrapping themselves in them like other bats. Kuhl’s pipistrelle typically has short ears with a short, sickle-shaped tragus. The bat gets its Slovene name belorobi netopir (literally: white-edged bat) from the edge of the wing membrane between the last digit of the foreleg and the hind leg. Its body is around 4.7 cm long, it has a wingspan of around 22 cm and it weighs between 5 and 10 g. It is found in Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. It is a nocturnal hunter of flying insects and uses echolocation in a frequency range of between 36 and 40 kHz.

New stamps on Light Houses

image image

Iceland Post issued a set of  stamps on Lighthouses . This issue consists of two stamps that depict the most famous and old lighthouses of the country. The stamps were released and put into circulation on the 11th of September.

The Dyrhólaey lighthouse. The first lighthouse in Dyrhólaey was erected in 1910. This was a Swedish ironframe lighthouse, the first of its kind to be built in Iceland. In 1927 a concrete lighthouse was erected in the island. It is 12.7 m in height, 123 m above sea level and fitted with a Swedish cylindrical lantern, 4,7 m in height, with a catadioptric revolving lens, 1000 mm

in diameter, using gas lighting. The lighthouse was powered by a lighting machine in 1964. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson made the first design which was later modified.

The Akranes lighthouse. There are two lighthouses on Skipaskagi in Akranes. The older one is a concrete tower which was constructed in 1918. The more recent lighthouse was erected in 1943–1944 based on design by engineer Axel Sveinsson. It was taken into use in 1947. Gas lighting was used at first, the light being amplified by a 500 mm catadioptric lens.

In 1956 the lighthouse was powered by electricity. The Swedish lantern is 3,5 m in height. The Akranes lighthouse is a conical tower, 19,2 m in height and stands on a concrete octangular base.

Sturla Thordarson – Great Poet and Historian from Iceland

lighimage

Date of issue : 11 September 2014

Iceland Post issued another commemorative stamp on 11th September to mark the 800th anniversary of its great writer – Sturla Thordarson. This talented person was also a chieftain, a poet and an historian.

The main sources on his life are to be found in the Saga of Icelanders which he himself composed. He was one of the most powerful men in Iceland and witnessed many of the dramatic events that he later described. Sturla was the nephew of Snorri Sturluson.

After Snorri’s execution in 1241 Sturla became the one of the most influential leaders of the Sturlungs who sought his advice and support. His power base was mainly around Breiðafjörður in the west. Sturla wrote about the two main battles in the Age of the Sturlungar: the battle of Örlygsstaðir 1238, in which he himself participated, and the burning of Flugumýri in 1253.

His accounts of these events are among the most terrifying and dramatic composed in the 13th century. Sturla excels in describing characters, battle scenes and dreams and prophecies predicting major events. Sturla is reputed to have written the saga of Grettir the Strong and other sagas. The stamp motif is the Saga of Hákon King of Norway which Sturla wrote, a stylized Viking helmet and a quill point.

The Seljan brothers grew up in Karlovac, a town which has also earlier seen world travellers, and their fondness of adventures was expressed already at an early age. Especially distinguished was Mirko, who after serving the military service in Romania worked as land surveyor in the basins of the rivers Danube and Neva. He travelled through Europe and spoke all major languages and in 1898 won the title Champion of Globetrotter – in only 110 days he walked the whole way from St. Petersburg to Paris.

Canada Post is honouring Canadian rock royalty in its latest issue of stamps, available later this month. As part of its Canadian recording artist series, Canada Post is rolling out stamps featuring The Tragically Hip, The Guess Who, Beau Dommage, and Rush.

image

“This year’s series features Canadian bands that have shaped the music industry in Canada,” Jim Phillips, Director of Stamp Services for Canada Post, said in a statement. “Each band has achieved national acclaim, along with international radio air-time and extensive tours.”

This is the fourth edition of the series. Previously featured musicians include The McGarrigle sisters, Bruce Cockburn, Robbie Robertson, and Ginette Reno.A booklet of 10 stamps costs $6.30. Special envelopes and postcards are also be available.

Beau Dommage
Formed in 1973, Beau Dommage played a significant role in defining Quebec's music in the 1970s. Considered the Beatles of Quebec and French music, the group released their first self-titled album in 1974, and broke sales records at the time. The following year "Où est passée la noce?" went platinum (100,000 units sold) on the first day of sales. Following successful tours in Europe and throughout Canada and Quebec between 1975 and 1978, Beau Dommage broke up in 1978, but reunited in 1994 to release their second self-titled album and tour Quebec the following year. In 2005, Beau Dommage appeared at the FrancoFolies in Montréal and were honoured by their musical peers.

Rush
Rush has sold in excess of 40 million records worldwide, placing them thirdbehind the Beatles and the Rolling Stones - for the most Gold and Platinum records by a rock band. Since their debut album in 1974, the Toronto group's musical style has changed from British blues rock, utilizing synthesizers, sequencers, and electronic percussion. The band recently returned to its rock and roll roots. Rush will be the first Canadian band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 18, 2013, making them part of an elite-few Canadian artists to be so honoured.

The Guess Who
The Guess Who got its start in Winnipeg in 1962 when singer/songwriter Chad Allen joined forces with Jim Kale, Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson and Bob Ashley to form Chad Allen and the Reflections. In 1965, the band's single, "Shakin' All Over," was released to radio stations in a plain white record jacket with only the words "Guess Who?" written on it. Intended to peak curiosity, the name immediately caught on. The rest, as they say, is history. Over the course of their career, The Guess Who have recorded 14 Top 40 hit singles, sold millions of albums, won two JUNO Awards and been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, Canada's Walk of Fame and the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. In 2002, the band received a Governor General's Performing Arts Award. While membership in the group has changed over the years, they continue to record and perform to sold-out audiences across the globe.

The Tragically Hip
Formed in 1984 in Kingston, Ontario, The Tragically Hip sought inspiration for their name from the Michael Nesmithmovie, "Elephant Parts." They have released 12 studio albums, two live albums, one extended play (EP), and 54 singles. The Tragically Hip has been the recipient of numerous awards, including 14 JUNO Awards and the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, and have been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. They have sold millions of records worldwide, managing to enjoy both mass popularity and critical acclaim.

Lighthouses on New Norwegian stamps…

image

Date of Issue : 15 June 2012

Hi !

Here are the two most beautiful stamps with Lighthouses..The picture shown on these Norwegian stamps are just wonderful with mist in the background…These are in the Oslo Fjord. These stamps are perhaps showing the most beautiful view of these light hoses !! It is a delight for those collecting stamps on Light houses !!

Kavringen Lighthouse was built in 1892 and is located on Søndre Kavringdyne, a group of skerries in the western seaward approach to the Port of Oslo. There had previously been two lighthouses in the Oslo harbour basin, Heggholmen and Dyna, situated in the old main sea lane. Towards the end of the 19th century, however, larger vessels began to prefer the western lane between Kavringen and Hovedøya, round Vippetangen and into Bjørvika. After DS Norge ran aground on the Kavringen skerries in 1890, there was a cry for better lighting in the western approach. The Kavringen lighthouse was completed and operational only two years later. Until 1956, when both lighthouses were automated and the job of lighthouse keeper became redundant, the lighthouse keeper on Dyna was also responsible for Kavringen. On 15 May (St. Hallvard’s Day), as part of Oslo’s millennium celebrations in 2000, a time capsule made of titanium was bolted to the inside of the lighthouse. The time capsule is designed like the lighthouse’s lantern housing and it contains letters and greetings from the citizens of Oslo to people of the future. The capsule cannot be opened until the year 3000.

image

Medfjordbåen is a sunken rock in the middle of the Oslo Fjord, off Slangentangen in the county of Vestfold. Here the lighthouse was built and went into operation in 1876. Medfjordbåen Lighthouse is a familiar rounding mark in the annual Færder Regatta, on the way to Åsgårdstrand and Horten.
