27th September is celebrated as World Tourism Day. Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.

Every time we travel, for whatever reason, we are part of a global movement; a movement that has the power to drive inclusive development, create jobs and build the sustainable societies we want for our future; a movement that builds mutual understanding and can help us safeguard our shared natural and cultural heritage.

World Tourism Day…

Tourism and Sustainable Energy

WTO

Today is World Tourism Day. It is being celebrated under the theme “Tourism & Sustainable Energy : Powering Sustainable Development “. Official celebrations will take place in Maspalomas, Spain  today on Sept 27.

This year’s theme aims to highlight tourism’s role in a brighter energy future; a future in which the world’s entire population has access to modern, efficient and affordable energy services.

Tourism, one of the world’s largest economic sectors, has already taken important steps towards this future – improving energy efficiency and increasingly using renewable energy technologies in its operations. These steps are creating jobs, lifting people out of poverty and helping to protect the planet.

Sri Lanka Post issued a beautiful set to commemorate WTO in 2011 . This set covers all aspects of Tourism. The stamps have been titles with different themes of Tourism. It is one of the most beautiful  sets of stamps on Tourism issued by a country !! Kudos to the designers !!
