Chinatown Gates..

image

These 8 domestic-rate PERMANENT stamps are part of Canada Post’s creative new series dedicated to gates of Chinatown. Wooden or stone gates, known as paifang in Mandarin, were originally used to separate subdivisions in Chinese cities. Eventually, these gates lost that role, and their doors, remained but as monuments. In Canada today, these gates are often the most visible representation of Chinatown in the cities, symbolic of cooperation between various levels of Canadian and Chinese governments, businesses, and citizens.

Victoria’s Gate of Harmonious Interest, built in 1981, stands in the heart of Canada’s first Chinatown. The gate blends traditional and symbolic elements and features hand-carved stone lions from Victoria’s sister city, Suzhou. One pillar commemorates Chinese Canadians who fought and died in World War II.

Vancouver’s Millennium Gate, built in 2002, was inspired by the Inner City Gates of 19th-century and 20th-century Beijing. It combines Eastern and Western designs to represent the past and future of the community.

image

The Chinatown Gate in Edmonton benefited from the expertise of Chinese architects and craftsmanship from the sister city of Harbin. Built in 1987, the gate features traditional Chinese motifs, colours, decorative tiles and ornate lighting.

Founded in 1909, Winnipeg’s Chinatown is one of Canada’s older Chinese communities. The gate, built in 1987, is a pedestrian overpass that connects and complements the Dynasty and Mandarin buildings.

Located at the entrance to the Mississauga Chinese Centre, this city’s timber gate was constructed solely with traditional wooden studs. Cooperation between China and Canada is demonstrated in the government support and construction expertise that made this gate possible.

Toronto’s Zhong Hua Men Archway, standing at Gerrard East and Hamilton Streets in Toronto’s Chinatown East, was built. The gate honours Chinese Canadian settlers, particularly those who laboured on the transcontinental railway.

Built in 2010, the Ottawa Chinatown Gateway, featuring nine roofs, is a royal Chinese arch that can only be built in capital cities. The gate has good-luck symbols embedded within, including five Chinese coins, one of which is at least 1,000 years old!

Montreal’s Chinatown actually has four gates—North, South, East and West. The North and South gates span St. Laurent Boulevard, while the smaller East and West gates mark pedestrian walkways. The North Gate on the stamp was donated by the city of Shanghai in 1999.

For this series of stamps, 8 illustrators across the country took to their communities to create watercolour paintings of the gates. The artists highlighted the most important angle for the gate in their community, and gave each stamp a truly local feel.

Miniature Sheet : Philately Day

India Post issued a Souvenir Sheet on October 12, 2012 on the occasion of Philately Day.

I think no proper planning was made for issuing that important Souvenir Sheet. The Designer of India Post simply copied the design from earlier issued M.S.( Date of Issue .4th. October.2004,on occasion of 150 years of India Post).

Stamp Exchange

I am an old stamp collector started in 1940 and continued till 1965. Between 65 to 2000 there was a break due to my professional involvement in my profession. I have again started from 2000. I now find stamp collection hobby to very much changed from the earlier years and has become more difficult to get used stamps. This is due to complete change in the postal delivery system as the postal authorities have resorted to franking, (non use of stamps), courier, non use of postal stamps in Registration & Speed post, franking of parcel are foreign air mail, use of private courier services, greater use of internet, mobile telephone, etc. Postal authorities do take out commemorative stamps and sell mostly 70% to large rich collectors, local dealers foreign stamps collectors are dealers, all in larger quantities. Only about 30% are sold by the Philatelic Bureau to individual/retail collectors and are rarely allocated to counter retail sale at the post offices. As a result Commemorative stamps are not seem/used by Indian public at large. Young Indian Collectors rarely see Commemorative stamps & thus are not attracted to this hobby. During the time I was actively collecting stamps from 1940 - 1965 I could collect so many beautiful and valuable stamps mainly by exchanging with individuals in India and Overseas. It was  a pleasure and a very good past time. Presently Philatelic  Hobby has become for the rich people by collecting / buying MINT stamps in large numbers.

I have collected more than 50000 stamps all arranged in 9 stamps albums according to Stanley Gibbons Catalogue as my base. I am still interested in exchanging stamps from Indian collectors and would like to share with them my experience of the past 50 years. My current interest is as under.

1) Exchange MINT India stamps from 2004 to 2012 to complete the series. From Philatelic Bureau I cannot get all the stamps and I have almost 40% missing. I would like to exchange for the missing stamps. A list of stamps needed and the extras I can offer in return will be sent. To be fair I offer exchange on the basis of year by year i.e. 2004 for 2004 and so on. Any deviation are acceptable by mutual discussion.

2) Can exchange FDC and Miniature sheets

3) Can exchange used Indians Commemorative stamps of 15p, 25p, 30p, 35p, 50p and 60p. Stamps with similar denominated stamps based on wanted list in order to complete the issues of the relevant period.

4) Can exchange Foreign stamps with Indian commemorative stamps on the basis of 1 for 1 or Scott 2008 catalogue.

5) Can buy Indian commemorative stamps of Rs4 and Rs.5/- all currently used from 1998 onwards individually or in lots of 25, 50, 50 single and multiple copies.

New Stamps on Christmas..

Iceland

image

As  Christmas is arriving many countries are issuing special stamps for this festive occasion. Here are new Christmas stamps from Hungary and Iceland.

The motifs of these Iceland Post's Christmas stamps are based on goldwork embroidery, a rich national heritage involving techniques used for Icelandic national costumes.

Goldwork is the art of embroidery using silver and gold threads. Reference is also made to skattering, an old Icelandic method of embroidering, often used for colourful flower patterns.

Hungary

image

Magyar Posta is issuing a set of postage stamps to celebrate Christmas. In 2011 the festive stamps show two Catholic churches with Nativity scenes that are unique both in Hungarian and world terms.

The Nagykaracsony church is on the left of the HUF 90 stamp, and next to it is a detail of the largest outdoor Nativity scene in Hungary, which is to be found in Nagykaracsony. The Roman Catholic church in Vors is on the left of the HUF 115 stamp, with a detail of the largest indoor Nativity scene in Europe, which is rebuilt every year, next to it.

Gold-colour foil has been used for the inscription Karacsony (Christmas) and other decorative motifs on the stamps.

Postage Stamps to go online in 2012

image

PTI     New Delhi   April 20, 2011

Department of Post is planning to introduce online version of postage stamps, which will enable India Post customers to use print out of the stamp for sending mails.
"Our effort is to make access of postal service easy and simple for users. We are working on project that will enable them to print copy of bar-code based receipt and use it in place of postal stamps for sending mails," Department of Post (DoP) Secretary Radhika Doraiswamy told PTI.
The project is a part of e-commerce initiatives by India Post, she added.
"Our minister (Union Minister for Communications and IT Kapil Sibal) has already inaugurated e-post office and has asked e-market place to be developed. We are in process of developing application for various platforms on internet," she added.

Under the e-market place project, DoP will facilitate selling of small scale and cottage industry products through its website. The product catalogue will be published on internet and will give customers an option to select and make payments for the purchased product online.
Once the order in placed, post-office, located nearest to the product seller's location, will arrange for the pick-up and delivery of the product to the customer."We will accept orders from both domestic and international customers," Doraiswamy said.Doraiswamy mentioned that DoP is contemplating introduction of home pick-up services for mails and parcels for some set of services such as registered post, insured post, speed post and WorldNet. "Customer would have to pay online and register for the service. A postman will then go and pick the parcel or mail from the customer. The plan, however, is currently in a discussion phase," she said.

She added, "We have to ensure that post office gets the payment for delivering services and customers get services conveniently. Everything is being worked out through RFPs (request for proposals), but most of our services will come on internet in 2012," Doraiswamy said.

It is about a Post office in Uttaranchal which functions for 3 months only in a year. It is a tradition from British Period when Britishers opened a temporary Post Office in a Rest House at a place, 22 Kms form Nainital called Dhoopchor  where they used to work from 15 April to 30 June. After their return the staff also shifted to a  nearby Post office at Mehar Gaon place. This tradition still continues and post office runs here from 15 April to 15 June every year. My sincere thanks to Mr Shrikant Parikh of Ahmedabad & Mr Atul Agarwal of Aligarh for  today’s Post. This is all in Today’s Post……Till Next Post……Have a Nice Time !
