 U.R.Rao - Archiect of India's Science Programme

Prof Udupi Ramachandra Rao, born in the year Neutron was discovered, went on to become the nucleus of India's Space Programme. As one who strongly believed in 'Science for the Society', it is not at all surprising that early space missions focused on weather forecasting, telecommunication and prospecting the rich natural resources of India, As Chairman of ISRO as well as of Space Commission, Prof Rao indigenously built the necessary rockettechnology for all the space missions. This spirit continues to this day.
In recognition of his monumental work, the Government of India awarded the prestigious 'Padma Bhushana' in 1976 and the 'Padma Vibhushana' in 2017.

Indian theme on foreign stamps...

Seychelles Post Issued a stamp on October 14, 2016 - 4th Seychelles-India Day.The stamp features  Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple . It is the only Hindu temple in the Seychelles. Built in 1992, the temple was named after Lord Vinayagar, the Hindu god of safety and prosperity.

- Kasinath R. - Tanjore

The Seychelles Postal Services collaborated with the Indian Association of Seychelles to release the stamp, which depicts the only Hindu Temple located in the island nation’s capital, Victoria.

A new commemorative stamp was launched on 14th October 2016 aimed at showcasing Seychelles-India relations, as well as creating a symbol of the annual celebration of the Seychelles’ Indian heritage.
The stamp was unveiled at the official launching of the 2016 edition of the Seychelles-India Day, an event that has been celebrated since 2013.

The Seychelles Postal Services collaborated with the Indian Association of Seychelles to release the stamp, which depicts the only Hindu Temple located in the island nation’s capital, Victoria. The Chairperson of the Indian Association, Ramakrishnan Ramu Pillay, told SNA that they wanted to create something that would leave a historical imprint of the annual event, adding that the temple was chosen because of its cultural and touristic value.

"We chose the Indian temple because it's never been used in such way before and many tourists visit the temple on a daily basis, hence are familiar with this iconic establishment in the country,” said Pillay.
“When they send a post card to their friends and families abroad, they will be promoting Seychelles India-Day through this new stamp," he added.

The new commemorative stamp costs less than a dollar (10 Seychelles rupees) and is on sale at all post offices in Seychelles along with a First Day Cover being sold at 30 Seychelles rupees.
The Director of Operations of Seychelles Postal Services, Barbara Esther, told SNA that the last time they issued a commemorative stamp was over two years ago.

She said that Indian Ocean Association opted for the stamp in its quest for something that would also showcase the good relation between Seychelles and India.

“They designed the stamp themselves choosing what to put on it and the postal services facilitated the process, making the final product what it is today," said Esther. Many of the Indian Ocean archipelago’s 93,000 mixed population can trace their roots back to one or more ancestors with Indian heritage. The stamp was but one initiative announced as part of efforts to add value to the place India holds as part of the country’s cultural diversity.

At Friday’s launching ceremony, the Seychelles Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St.Ange also announced that plans are underway to build a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Victoria.

According to hubpages.com, statues of Mahatma Gandhi -- often referred to as the apostle of non-violence -- have been erected in more than 70 countries across the globe.
Minister St Ange said: “We believe as a country that the influences set by Mr. Gandhi is something that needs to be treasured."

Festivals 2016 – Yom Kippur Poem!

Date of Issue : 13 September 2016

Here is an exquisite  set of High Holyday stamps from Israel Post to be issued next month featuring Yom Kippur Poem. The beautiful tabs (special characteristics of Israeli stamp) on stamps depict art piesce by a potter, glazier and a silversmith  with inscription Yom Kippur Poem. The art work on  all three stamps is beautifully presented. A big appreciation to the designer  for giving such wonderful designs to these stamps.

The most important High Holyday in the Jewish religion is Yom Kippur – a day to reflect, repent and ask forgiveness for one’s sins. This poem has been chosen to be a theme for Festivals stamp set that illustrates the metaphoric Yom Kippur Poem. This literary work describes different artisans creating something new from raw materials – just like God created mankind. The artisans represented on this stamp series are the potter, the glazier and the silversmith.

The poem “As the Clay in the Hand of the Potter” appears in the Ashkenazi version of the prayer book for the eve of Yom Kippur. The author is unknown. It portrays human beings as being subject to the will of God, who decides who shall live and who shall die. This poem is recited on Yom Kippur because “Yom Kippur is the time for all to repent, individuals and the community at large. It is the climax of forgiveness and of pardon for Israel, thus every person is obligated to repent and confess on Yom Kippur” (Maimonides, Laws of Repentance 2:7).

The poet uses imagery featuring artisans using different kinds of materials; just as human beings are raw materials molded by the hand of God. They recognize their sins and their consequent punishment, yet still ask for mercy: “Look to the covenant and do not incline to your desire”. In other words, God will remember the covenants made by the fathers of the Jewish nation with Him throughout the generations, and thus He shall forgive them.
The list of artisans mentioned in the poem varies in different versions of the ancient prayer books. Some note nine artisans while others list only seven. In one version the artisans are listed in alphabetical order. According to the interpretation by Rabbi Shlomo Pappenhim (1740-1814), which is based on the seven artisans mentioned in the poem, each artisan represents a period in the life of a person, who is accountable to God.

image

On Thursday, 18th September 2014, Swiss Post distributed four free stamps each worth one Swiss Franc to every household across the country! So it was a pleasant surprise to the letter-box owners of four million households when they received this gift of four stamps in the form of online WebStamp. The Stamp distribution is combined with a competition, offering prizes worth total of 90,000 Swiss Francs.

The campaign is a part of a compromise which Swiss Post reached with the price regulator at the beginning of 2014. The agreement guarantees that the prices of A (=fast mail) and B (=“Snail Mail”) Mail which have not changed since 2004, and domestic parcel will remain the same until 2016. The Bombardment of Madras

The Bombardment of Madras was an engagement of World War I, at Madras (Chennai), British India. The bombardment was initiated by the German light cruiser Emden at the start of the war in 1914.

With Captain Karl von Müller in command, on the night of 22 September 1914, SMS Emden quietly approached the city of Madras on the southeastern coast of the Indian peninsula. After entering the Madras harbor area and observing for a moment, Müller gave the order to engage at 9:30 pm, Emden opened fire at 3,000 yards on several large oil tanks within the harbor, which belonged to the Burmah Oil Company.

Within the first 30 rounds, the oil tanks were in flames. After bombing the fuel tanks, Emden moved onto a small merchant ship in harbor. The craft was quickly sunk by Emden's deck guns. The worst casualties experienced that night were from the merchant vessel, 26 of whose crew were injured. At least 5 of the sailors were killed on scene or died later of injuries. The action lasted half an hour, until 10:00 pm, by which time the British shore batteries had begun to respond. However, Emden slipped away unscathed. In all, 125 shells were fired by the Germans.  The raid did little damage but thousands of people fled the city. Madras was the only Indian city to come under attack by forces of the Central Powers during World War I.
