Titanic on new British stamps

image

Titanic and Royal Mail are closely interlinked, as the ship was commissioned to carry mail and so the letters RMS (Royal Mail Ship) were used in the ship’s name. On 10 April 1912, when the grand new White Star Line liner set sail from Southampton on its maiden voyage to New York with 2,223 people on board, travelling among them were two British postal workers together with three counterparts from the US Postal Service. There is evidence that they valiantly tried to save the mail when the Titanic  collided with an iceberg four days later, but all five individuals were among the 1,522 people who perished when she sank.

100 years of the Titanic disaster….

Souvenir sheet from Hungary

image

Date of issue: 13 April 2012

Hi ! Here is a unique souvenir sheet with two stamps  issued on 100 years of Titanic..This is the most unusual issue of this year with embossed design. The ship theme collectors would love to have this nice magnificent  item in his/her collection !! Thus is all for Today….Till Next Post …Have a Nice Time !!

Magyar Posta has issued an exclusive commemorative souvenir sheet  in memory of the Titanic and Dr Árpád Lengyel, the ship’s doctor on the first vessel to hurry to the aid of the Titanic, the British steamship RMS Carpathia. The main motif of this unusual philatelic product is the Titanic heading towards the iceberg, while the stamps show parts of the liner.

In the top right corner there is a portrait of Dr Lengyel and the outline of RMS Carpathia. The unusual feature of this release is that, in addition to offset printing and embossing, iridescent spot-varnish screen printing, usually a security device, has been used and the particles scattered across the surface sparkle icily.

The first day cover features a portrait of Dr Árpád Lengyel, while the silhouette of a lifeboat has been used for the special postmark.

Titanic

The Titanic was built in the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and when she was launched, she was the world’s largest steam-powered passenger liner. She left Southampton at noon on 10 April 1912 with 2207 pas-sengers on board. Several ice warnings were received on the evening before the disaster, but the high volume of telegrams prevented some from reaching the bridge. Although the Titanic was the largest and most elegant vessel on the transatlantic route, it was not the fastest, which jeopardised the planned arrival in New York on 16 April 1912.

For this reason it steamed full ahead and did not try to avoid the potentially dangerous area of drifting ice. At 11.40 pm on 14 April the watch spotted a floating iceberg. The officer on duty ordered the ship to be steered to the left and the port propeller to be put into reverse. A long time passed before the gigantic vessel slowly began to turn, and so the iceberg punctured a series of fatal holes below the waterline on the starboard side of the ship. The captain immediately sent distress signals and gave the order to abandon ship.

RMS Carpathia heard the Mayday but was too far from the scene to offer immediate help. The Titanic sank at 2.20 am on 15 April. The people in the lifeboats were picked up by the Carpathia about 75 minutes later.

The ship’s doctor of the Carpathia, which hurried to the Titanic’s aid, was Dr Árpád Lengyel, who did all within his power to save the survivors, endangered by hypothermia. The survivors gave him a medallion in gratitude. His grave is in the Kerepesi Cemetery in Budapest.

New Titanic stamps..

New Titanic centenary stamps from Ireland…

Titanic 1

Thomas Andrews is on the 55c stamp.

Ger Garland designed four stamps featuring the faces of four Titanic passengers, which have been unveiled in Cobh, Co. Cork. There are two 55c stamps - one with Co. Down Titanic shipbuilder Thomas Andrews and another of Irish photographer Father Browne, who left the ship at his hometown of Cork. There are also two 82c stamps.

One shows Titanic Captain Edward J. Smith surrounded by oblivious passengers on the doomed ship’s stern and the other is of life boat six survivor Molly Brown with the first class staircase behind her.

There’s a strong postal connection with the Titanic, which was also an RMS Royal Mail ship. It had five postal clerks on board, three Americans and two British. All lost their lives when the ship sank.

Titanic survivor Albert Thessinger was the last person to see them alive. “I urged them to leave their work,” he said. “They shook their heads and continued at work. I saw them no more.”

No other ship has cast a bigger shadow than the Titanic, which remains the most iconic vessel of our time.

On her tragic maiden voyage, more than 1,500 people died when the "practically unsinkable" ship hit an iceberg and sank on 15 April 1912.

Much has been written about the ship, its passengers and those who survived the disaster.  Here, we take a look at some of the facts, as well as the myth and legend surrounding the Titanic:-

  • Some of the most important ice warnings didn't reach the Titanic's bridge on 14 April 1912. Recorded ice warnings were sent through the day from other ships in the vicinity and the officers knew they were approaching a large ice field.
  • Even though the order had been given that women and children were to be evacuated first, a surprisingly large number of them perished, most being second and third class passengers. Initially, some of the limited lifeboats were leaving the ship only half full.
  • Captain Edward J Smith was planning to retire in 1911 but White Star Line convinced him to stay and oversee the Titanic's first transatlantic crossing. Captain Smith had promised his wife Eleanor and daughter Helen that he would retire after Titanic's first voyage.
  • Contained within the ship's cargo hold were three crates of ancient models which passenger Molly Brown had secured for Denver Museum. This shipment is thought to be the source of the story reported by several New York newspapers following the disaster: that the ship's hold contained an Egyptian mummy whose presence may have cursed the maiden voyage. The story is, of course, completely untrue, as there was no mummy onboard.
  • Over 750 passengers travelled in first class, where tickets cost £525.00 (approximately £34,150.00 today). The most luxurious suites were on "B" deck where tickets cost £945.00 (approximately £61,500.00 today).
  • Miss Violet Jessop was a crew member on all three White Star Line ships - the Titanic, Olympia and Britannic. All three suffered misfortunes and Miss Jessop survived each time.
  • The last remaining survivor, Millvina Dean, died on 31 May 2009 in a nursing home in Southampton, aged 97. She was scheduled to board the Adriatic with her parents and brother but the coal strike meant they were transferred to the Titanic as third class passengers. She never married and shunned any attention, only embracing it in later years when she attended events.
