Christmas 2017 stamps from Luxembourg

Date of Issue : 5 December 2017
Here is a beautiful set of stamps from Luxembourg Post .The theme “Winter and Christmas” is ideally suited to the light, lovingly detailed style of the Japanese illustrator Kumiyo Maurel, whose drawings transport us to another world. She is particularly fond of telling stories that she not only writes herself, but also  illustrates.  There was a lot for her to discover while designing this year’s special edition of Christmas stamps.

Christmas is traditionally a family celebration, while the Japanese observe “A Celebration of Love” with friends and colleagues, where Japanese singles hope to meet that special person with whom to spend the rest of their lives.

Stamp on organized philately

125th anniversary of organized philately in Luxembourg

image

Date of Issue : 3 March 2015

Luxembourg Post has released a special stamp on occasion of the 125th anniversary of organized philately. The stamp was issued on the 3rd of March.

On Palm Sunday, 30 March 1890, five young collectors, Joseph Schock, J. Faber, Jean-Charles Kohn, Jean Hellinckx and Michel Goebel, met at the Kiffer Café in the train station district of Luxembourg-City to found a philately society, the “Union des Timbrophiles de Luxembourg”, the first philately society in Luxembourg.

In 1934, the “Union des Timbrophiles de Luxembourg” was one of the four founding societies of the “Fédération des Sociétés Philatéliques” of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (FSPL) which celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2014.

Bletchley Park Post Office to close

image

Britain’s secret little post office is to close at the end of March. The undercover mailroom of the Enigma code breakers during the Second World War became a post office in 1947. Then Bletchley Park’s first gift shop when it opened to the public in 1994. In 2012 it was refurbished and officially opened by the keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection. But new management at Bletchley Park have decided it is no longer “core to the code breaking story”. It is the last of the private collections to leave Bletchley Park.

The limited edition first day covers for new stamp issues it produced helped in keeping Bletchley Park open in those early days. Many have become worth several hundred pounds GBP and sought after by collectors around the world. They became known as “little pieces of art and history” due to the beautiful artwork that combined with new stamp issues to tell the story of Bletchley Park.

Now that no more issues will bear the “Bletchley Park Post Office” postmark those collections could increase significantly in value. The few remaining cover and stamp issues are already being snapped by collectors and visitors whilst still available. The entire collection can be viewed at the bletchleycovers.com website.

Stamp donation : to save a child’s life

image

Here is  interesting information concerning stamps and stamp collecting. Who could only imagine that a pile of stamps helped to support a child with a serious illness? Thousands of stamps have poured in after a couple put out an appeal to help collect as many as possible to raise money to find a cure for their daughter’s rare genetic disease.

Carly and Paul Hadman set up stamp collection boxes in banks and shops across the Fens as part of an appeal to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Late Infantile Batten Disease which their daughter Effie was diagnosed with last year.

Her mum Carly, of Whittlesey, thanked everybody for the response which she said had been amazing.Effie was a bright, bubbly girl until for no apparent reason she suddenly forgot all of her numbers, colours and people’s names. She then started suffering seizures.

Mrs Hadman said: “We thought she had epilepsy but in January 2014, when Effie was three and a half, we received the devastating news that she has Late Infantile Batten Disease which has a life expectancy of five to 12 years old”.

Carly and her husband Paul are carriers for the rare disorder. The one ray of light is that their one year old son George does not have the disease ‒ he was six weeks old when they discovered Effie was terminally ill.

Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system, in which previously normal children develop vision problems or seizures. At the moment, there is no treatment and no cure for Batten disease.

Luxembourg  Post issued 3 stamps featuring different themes  on 8th March 2014.

100 years of the Luxembourg Red Cross stamp

Post Luxembourg issued a stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Luxembourg Red Cross.

Since 1914, the Luxembourg Red Cross has continuously expanded its activities in order to offer as much help as possible to the most vulnerable people, both nationally and internationally.

Therefore, this anniversary is an opportunity for the Red Cross to present its activities to the general public and rally the inhabitants of Luxembourg around the causes it defends.

2014 is also the time to take stock and look back at everything that has been achieved thanks to the involvement of men and women over the past 100 years.

The mission of the Luxembourg Red Cross is to help vulnerable people to live independently and with dignity. By mobilizing human solidarity, it acts in an exemplary, efficient and responsible way to rescue those in distress and prevent situations of material, health and social vulnerability, both in Luxembourg and abroad. The Luxembourg Red Cross acts in accordance with the fundamental principles of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

Its thousands of volunteers and over 1,700 professionals make it a leading player in the health, social, youth and humanitarian fields. The Luxembourg Red Cross is thus involved in activities as diverse as emergency international humanitarian aid, home care, blood transfusions, convalescence, the care of elderly or dependent people in integrated or day centers, social assistance, the care of migrants and refugees, individual help for people in difficulty, childcare centers and youth centers, or even social and family therapeutic services.

Felids on New Luxembourg stamps

image

The exhibition about big cats “Alles fir d’Kaz” will take place at the end of 2014 at the Natural history museum in Luxembourg. To commemorate the event, Luxembourg Post is issuing a set of three stamps depicting Felids – Wildcat, Sumatran Tiger and Eurasian Lynx.

Felids, or felines, have fewer teeth than other animals (with pointed fangs and sharp molars), powerful jaw muscles and retraceable claws used to inflict wounds. They are highly adept at running and jumping, have excellent night vision and are carnivorous, and hunters at heart.

The wildcat (Felis silvestris) is a species of feline of the Felidae family. Living in different habitats, it roams the regions of Europe, western Asia and Africa. Small to medium in size, its appearance varies depending on the sub-species, but generally its coat is brown with black stripes.

The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrea) is one of the smallest subspecies of tiger and classed as “critically endangered”. The Sumatran tiger’s coat is very dark and its stripes often break into a cluster of spots on its underbelly. Lines with small specks can be found between the stripes on their back, flank and hind legs.

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), also known as the common Lynx, is easily recognizable by its long legs, short tail, distinctive head with pointed ears. The colour of its coat varies from creamy white to dark brown, with black spots on the body, which can be full spots or rosettes. The Eurasian lynx has a particularly dense coat, notably on the back. It can no longer be found in Luxembourg, but hope to reintroduce it in the near future exists.

Trades of Yesteryears…

image

The traditional stamp issue from Luxembourg "Trades of Yesteryear" is dedicated to the professions left in the past centuries. The current issue covers the trades of washerwoman, hatter, farmer and market gardener.

Hatter: One hundred years ago, hats were still part of everyday clothing. The trade of the hatter was, therefore, well represented. With creative ideas, various forms and fabrics, as well as with the support of other decorative materials, hatters had a considerable influence on fashion at the time.

Washerwoman: With the assistance of soap, board, and beater, washerwomen were responsible for washing clothes. Each piece of clothing was first soaked, then rubbed and washed. Then the clothes were dried outside and ironed before being returned to the closet.

image

Farmer: The trade of farmer was synonymous with heavy physical labour. There wasn't farm machinery available to families who worked in the fields. But female farmers didn't just help cultivate the land and take care of cattle, they were also busy with children and took care of the whole farm.

      image

Market gardener: At the end of the 19th century, herbs, vegetables, and fruit were grown in so called market gardens. Women cared for and pampered these plants every day in order to provide to their customers, at weekly markets, herbs, fruit and vegetables of great taste and freshness.

The joiner

image

Date of  Issue : 6 December 2011

Luxembourg Post issued a beautiful set of 4 stamps featuring  trades of yesteryears. The designs of the stamps  are very nice  and appealing.

The joiner

A joiner cuts, planes, knocks, embeds, assembles...

Joinery is an activity somewhere between carpentry and cabinetry. The placement of most flooring, for instance, is carried out sometimes by a carpenter, and other times by a joiner. Cabinetry is generally reserved for the joiners’ most delicate work, in particular the making of furniture. Joiners are building professionals who traditionally work in wood. They manufacture and place doors, windows, and cupboards. They provide measurement services. Their professional discipline is joinery but also the arrangement of insulating materials as well as light ironwork.

The potter

image

The appearance of pottery was an essential step in the history of civilisation and goes back to the Neolithic era. The fi rst pottery items, baked in the open, were matt and porous, and of a sombre colour. A silicabased coating that made them watertight was also discovered very early on. Earthenware is a pottery item with an opaque white or tinted tin glazing. Earthenware items, intended for a rich clientele and made by renowned manufacturers, reached their pinnacle in the 18th century. They became more common among the wider population when the privileged classes turned to porcelain.

The stonemason

image

A stonemason is an artisan who hews stones used to build or restore buildings.
But they are not just artisans. Their design skills allow them to develop and refine their perception of forms and shapes. Skilful with their hands, a stonemason’s motions are precise and sure. Before beginning work on a historic monument, they study different architectural styles and acquire basic knowledge of the history of art. Another indispensable quality: meticulousness. A tool slipping or an exaggerated groove can lead to a work in the making being irreparably damaged.

The printer

image

Printing uses a collection of technologies that enable the reproduction of the written word and of illustrations in large quantities, generally on paper, in order to be able to distribute them widely. In 1440, Johannes Gensfleisch, better known by the name of Gutenberg, had the idea of using movable characters in lead, thereby inventing modern typography.
For a long time, printers remained at the level of a small artisan. Nevertheless, even though wages were low, the work was considered prestigious. Since books remained costly objects, typographers were constantly in contact with well read men. A printer also had an important privilege: the right to carry a sword.

The Designer of the stamps :

image Jacques Doppée: painter, designer, water colourist, engraver. Educated in Belgium at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and at the Ecole des Arts d’Ixelles, he specialised in medieval techniques. Jacques Doppée is inspired by nature and has a fondness for landscapes and beach views. He also creates stylised and floral subjects or insects represented graphically and in great detail. As an author of postage stamps, he has already designed numerous stamps for the Belgian and Luxembourg post services and even for the Faroe Islands.

Stamps on Viticulture from Luxembourg

 Date of Issue : 17 May 2011

On 17 May 2011 Luxembourg Post issued two stamps on Viticulture. The one features wine bottle and grapes commemorating 100th Anniversary of the ‘Wenzerverband’ and the other commemorates 20th Anniversary of the Cremant de Luxembourg.

image

100th Anniversary of the ‘Wenzerverband’

On 28 May 1911, the district commissioner invited winegrowers to a meeting with the aim of combining all the regional viticultural associations into a single federation. At the time, there were 39 winegrowing associations, of which 30 accepted the invitation. The fundamental objectives of the federation were defined at this constitutional assembly.

They were:- to protect the interests of the profession, that is, to preserve and maintain the interests of viticulture and wine distribution;- to specifically provide continuous up-to-date education and practical training for its members and - to organise the centralised sale and distribution of different viticultural products.

image

20th Anniversary of the Cremant de Luxembourg

Creating a crémant requires constant vigilance, rigorous control and specific know-how, beginning with the vine. The etymology of crémant originates from the word “cream”, which underscores the consistency rather than the vinosity of a festival wine combining fruit, freshness and smoothness.

A crémant is the qualitative pinnacle of a traditional method controlled for a long time, which involves extra effort in the vineyard and a rigorous selection process of grapes and base wines. To produce sparkling wine, one may use any one of the types of vines certified in Luxembourg. The grapes must be very clean, quite ripe and intact until pressed. The “Crémant de Luxembourg” is made from the best types of vines of the Luxembourg Moselle region. Each winegrower chooses his own blends, which results in a great variety of wines and their specific flavours.

New Stamps from Luxembourg

Date of Issue - 27 September 2010

Hi ! Here are some beautiful stamps issued on the 27th of September by the Luxembourg Post featuring a series of stamps dedicated to the famous Luxembourgers . These stamps are very special in design as each stamp depicts the work of the concerned personality very dominantly and making the stamp very catchy and attractive. I highly appreciate the designers’ work . In fact such stamps cover two themes, one personality and the other, related work. Sometimes stamps with just picture of the person just don’t look special. In India we have a large number of stamps regularly issued on personalities every year if such ideas are taken, more attractive and beautiful stamps could be created. The series of personalities will be highly appreciated by the collectors. All these three stamps shown here are very nice and beautiful. But the stamp featuring famous writer Anne Beffort is wonderful in design….Famous building in background with a dominance of fountain pen signifying the personality as a great writer is just awesome !! Kudos to the designers of all these three beautiful stamps !!……This is all for Today….Till Next Post …..Have a Great Time !!

Jean Soupert, born on 20 February 1834 in Dommeldange and died on 17 July 1910 in Limpertsberg, was a grower of roses. With Pierre Notting, also a nursery grower at Constantin Wilhelm in Luxembourg-Clausen, Jean Soupert launched, in 1855, their own new rose business, “Soupert & Notting” in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg. From 1856, the new roses developed: “Tour de Malakoff”, “La Noblesse” and “Duc de Constantine” (1857), achieved great success. Of the numerous medals won at international competitions in France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom, and the United States of America, 130 have been preserved in the numismatic section of the National Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg.

Great

The Luxembourger racing cyclist Nicolas Frantz was born on 4 November 1899 in Mamer. In the course of his 12-years professional career (1923 to 1934) he got 60 victories. In 1929, Nicolas Frantz took fifth place in the Tour de France and won two stages. Frantz won Paris-Brussels in 1927 and Paris-Tours in 1929. He twice finished in the top three of the world championships. He later became the sports manager of Charly Gaul's first national team in the Tour de France.

Great

Anne Beffort was born on 4 July 1880 in Neudorf to a family of 10 children. Anne Beffort participated in the creation of the first public school for young girls which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2010. Anne Beffort published numerous articles in the daily press and in Luxembourg magazines, sensitizing public opinion on French-Luxembourg cultural relations. In 1937, she was the co-founder of the Friends of the Victor Hugo House Association in Vianden. Since 2003 the "Anne Beffort" prize is awarded each year by the Town of Luxembourg to a person or organisation working in the domain of equal opportunity between men and women.Anne Beffort passed away in Davos in 1966 at the age of 86. Her ashes are kept at the Fetschenhof cemetery in Luxembourg.
