Earth Day 2019: Protect Our Species

2019 theme for Earth Day, to protect threatened and endangered species.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day now includes events in more than 193 countries, which are coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-infirst held on April 22, 1970.

Sound of Silence....Beautiful Finland

Finland in different seasons

Date of Issue : 24 February 2017

Here is a beautiful set of stamps featuring scenic natural beauty of Finland. The Calm and tranquil stamps depict Finnish nature in different seasons and are suitable for international postcards and light letters. The sheet designed by Stiina Hovi contains fifteen international no-value indicator stamps.

Hovi is an experienced graphic designer, whose handiwork is also seen in the supplement Kantri of Maaseudun Tulevaisuus.

– I chose pictures that, in my opinion, beautifully depict an important seasonal element—water—in its different forms. The pictures were taken in different parts of Finland during different seasons, and the photographers have nicely captured the moods of Finnish nature, Hovi says.

The stamps feature :

Ice Flowers

Date of Issue : 20 September 2016

The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT)  issued a beautiful set of 4 stamps featuring Ice Flowers on 20th September 2016.

The ice flowers or ice ferns represented on these stamps are the names given to the intricate ice patterns that form on glass at AAT stations throughout the winter months.

These icy wonders are created when humid air meets a sub-zero glass pane or window. As winter temperatures frequently fall below -40 ° C, they are a common occurrence in Australia’s stations. The icy patterns seem to grow like plants and resemble ferns or flowers, hence their name. Dust and other matter present on the glass can change the way these formations occur. For instance, droplets of water melted by the sun on the inside of a double-glazed window can be transformed into flowery marvels by ice forming overnight.
