Popularly known as "The Ghazal King" he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian ghazal singer Chitra Singh, in the 1970s and 1980s, as the first ever successful duo act (husband-wife) in the history of recorded Indian music. Recipient of Padma Bhushan award, he has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali.
His popular ghazals include, Meri zindagi kisi aur ki, mere naam ka koi aur hai, Apni marzi se kahan apne safar ke hum hain, Wo jo hum mein tumme qaraar tha, Patta-patta boota-boota haal hamaara jaane hai, Hoshwalo ko khabar, etc.

Undoubtedly late Shri Jagjit Singh was an emperor of Ghazals and his passing away is a great loss to the lovers of his music. One of his songs Mera geet Amar Kar do... in addition to many other of his songs are famous and all his songs will remain in the hearts of music lovers for ever. His deep dignified voice carried the restlessness of a vagabond's heart and a philosoper's calm.He brought Ghazals to millions of drawing rooms of music lovers. My Musical salute to him. May his sould rest in peace.

Guzaare hain kai mausam,
tha uska fun, shari-ke-gham,
sukoo-ne-dil,koi marham
kabhi saathi, kabhi saaki,
tha sehelata akelapan
woh toota, par nahin bikhra,
parose bol, dhun,sargam
suro me ek sannata,
hai chhaya aaj khalipan,
gaya jag-jit,hue gum geet ,
ghazal ka ek daur dafan.
