LESS KNOWN FACT FOR JAINISM COLLECTORS…
BOMBAY UNIVERSITY STAMP
- Sudhir Jain
Rajabai Clock Tower is among one of the most cherished and outstanding landmarks of Mumbai. It is situated near Church gate Railway Station in the campus of Bombay University. It houses the library of the University and has some of the brilliant stained glass windows in
Asia. It was named after Rajabai who was a religious Jain lady. She was blind. Her son Premchand Roychand Jain was a cotton broker who founded the Bombay Stock Exchange. Her mother being blind and staunch follower of Jainism, had to eat her dinner before sunset. The bells of Rajabai tower helped her know the time.
Rajabai Clock Tower
Premchand Roychand started construction of this tower in the year 1869.It was designed by an English architect Sir Gilbert Scott on the lines of famous Big Ben clock tower of London. Presenting a fusion of Venetian and Gothic styles of architecture, Rajabai Tower is constructed out of Kurla stone. The total cost of construction came to Rs. 2 lakhs which was a princely sum in those days. It was completed in the year 1878. This 280 feet high tower was at that time the tallest building in Bombay.
Rajabai Clock Tower (under construction)
Through the sound of bell of this tower, Rajabai didn't require anyone's help to know the time and she could herself take her dinner before sunset. . In the earlier times, it played the tunes of 'Rule Britannia', 'God Save the King' and 'A Handel Symphony', amongst the
sixteen tunes that changed four times a day. However, currently plays only 'Big Ben’ after every fifteen minutes.
