FLASH BACK
The struggle for India's Independence began in 1857 with the First struggle for freedom by the Sepoy in Meerut. Later, in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political organizations, under the leadership of Gandhi, launched a countrywide independence movement. Colonial powers were transferred to India on August 15, 1947, after the World War II, Britain could see that it no longer could hold its power over India.
It was becoming increasingly difficult and Indian freedom fighters were in no mood to give up. With the international support also coming to an end, Britain decided to relive India from their power to the constituent assembly; India gained its liberty and became a free country at midnight between August 14 and August 15, 1947. It was then that the free India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech. People across India are reminded of the meaning of this event - that it marked the start of a new era of deliverance from the British colonialism that took place in India for more than 200 years.
FACTS
The fateful date of 15th August Indian Independence Day was decided by the last Viceroy and first Governor General of India - Louis Mountbatten. He Chose August 15 since it was the same day that Japan Broadcast of the Imperial Rescript on surrenders At 12:00 noon Japan standard time , the Emperor's recorded speech to the nation, reading the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War, was broadcasted in 1945 at the end of World War II. (Mountbatten was a naval officer prior to his Indian post and was supreme commander of allied forces in South East Asia). Another interesting fact on why India celebrated Independence in Midnight rather than in the morning. When August 15 was announced, astrologers around India raised hue and cry that August 15 was not an auspicious day. So Indian Leaders arranged a compromise when the Independence Day was celebrated at Midnight - since a day under Hindu customs begins only after sunrise.
AGENDA OF INDEPENDENCE DAY FOR THE FIRST GOVERNMENT
On 15th August 1947 the, the Independence of India, first item on the agenda was the swearing-in of the Governor General Lord Mountbatten, and day’s other programme was as following:

CABINET SWEARING-IN ON INDEPENDENCE DAY WAS FIRST MILI-JULI SARKAR
Apart from first Prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, 13 other Ministers sworn to hold the office on first Independence Day of India. These included the nationalist stalwarts Sardar Vallabhbhai patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and four other Congress politicians of the younger generation. Gandhiji had reminded Congress that, “Freedom comes to India not to the Congress”, urging the formation of a Cabinet including the ablest men regardless of party affiliation. So the cabinet included those persons too, who were not from the congress. These included two representative of world of commerce and one representative of the Sikh community. There were three others in the cabinet who were always the adversaries of Congress. These were R.K. Shanmukham Chetty, Madras businessmen who possessed one of the best financial minds in India; Dr.B.R. Ambedkar, a brilliant legal scholar and an ‘Untouchable’ by caste; and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, a leading Bengal politician who belonged to the Hindu Mahasabha.
The first cabinet of India was ecumenical in ways other than the political. Its members came from as many as five religious denominations (with a couple of atheist), and from all parts of India. There was a woman, Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, as well as two from socially unprivileged community and believed to be ‘untouchables’, just because of their caste.
FIRST FLAG HOISTING ON RED FORT
The first Independence Day Flag hoisting Ceremony was performed at India Gate not at Red Fort, Tiranga was hoisted for the first time on the ramparts of the Red Fort on the morning of Saturday at 8.30 a.m. August16 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It was from 1948 onwards that the Flag hoisting ceremony was started at the Red Fort on every Independence Day.

The P&T Department, however, come out with a large Cachet post mark with the slogan "Jai Hind" for the occasion, and letters mailed at the major post offices in the country were cancelled with post mark for a few weeks beginning 15th August 1947. The post mark was withdrawn on 31 December 1947 but reintroduced at Girdikot Post Office, Jodhpur in June 1948. Most of the postmarks issued after 31 December 1947 are from this post office. The mark was withdrawn from Girdikot in April 1949, but was reused in June 1949 in Jodhpur Post Office in a new format of a rectangular box measuring 51 mm x 26 mm which reads "Jai Hind" in English and Hindi in two lines, with the date, time and place in 3rd, 4th and 5th line respectively. The time and date are flanked with 3 wavy lines on each side. It was used as a cancellation mark. It remained in use until November 1955.
