40 Years of Karnataka Philatelic Society

 

Dr Sita Bhateja was honoured with lifetime achievement award at 40th anniversary celebration of Karnataka Philatelic Society on 6th December 2015.

To celebrate its 40th Anniversary Karnataka Philatelic Society organized a function at Meghdoot Auditorium, General Post Office Building, Rajbhavan Road, Bengaluru on 6th December 2015. On the occasion a Special Cover on 40 years of Karnataka Philatelic Society was released by Smt. Usha Chandrasekhar, Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Postal Circle in presence of Shri Chaitanya Dev, President, Karnataka Philatelic Society and Shri Markand Dave, India Representative of Royal Philatelic Society (Special Cover approval no. KTK/52/2015).

On the occasion renowned philatelist Dr. Sita Bhateja was awarded lifetime achievement award. Special edition of KarPhila Magazine was also released at the function. After the function a joint meeting with Royal Philatelic Society of London was also organized. Function was well attended by a large number of members and philatelists.

 

 

Karnataka Philatelic Society (KPS) was founded in 1975 in Bangalore by late Col. L. G. Shenoy and like minded senior philatelists and was registered with Government of Karnataka on 22nd March, 1976. Col. L.G. Shenoi was the first President and Sri Fredun P. Seervai was the first General Secretary of KPS. The KPS acts as a platform for philately in Karnataka especially in Bangalore. The key charter of the society is to promote philately as hobby starting from young kids to senior citizens.

The Special cover of World Soil Day released at Thiruvananthapuram on 5th Dec 2015

World Soil Day celebrations was organised by the departments of Agriculture and Soil Conservation at Thiruvananthapuram on 5th December 2015. On the occasion a Special Cover was released by Chief Postmaster General Sri A. N. Nanda in a function held at Senate Hall, Thiruvananthapuram. The cover was accepted by the Hon'ble Minister of Agriculture Sri. K. P. Mohanan from Chief PMG Shri A. N. Nanda (Special Cover approval no. KL-12/2015).

United Nations had declared 2015 as International Year of Soils and the United Nations theme for this year's World Soil Day is "Soils a solid ground for life". Soils have been neglected for too long. We fail to connect soil with our food, water, climate, biodiversity and life. We must invert this tendency and take up some preserving and restoring actions. The World Soil Day campaign aims to connect people with soils and raise awareness on their critical importance in our lives. All working groups, societies, clubs, associations, or publishers of philatelic magazines or newsletters publishing a periodical (at least once per ­calendar year) are entitled to participate.
Periodicals submitted must be periodicals published between September 1st, 2013 and August 31st, 2014 to qualify.

Award winning stamp from Iceland

 

Iceland Post was recently awarded the Ecology Prize for the year 2013 at the 44th Asiago International Award for Philatelic Art.

The prize has high patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy, and was presented during a ceremony in the Council Hall of the Municipality of Asiago (Vicenza, Italy) on Sunday, 6 July 2014.

The award winning stamp - International Year of Water Cooperation, was designed by Borgar Hjörleifur Árnason and issued on 24th January 2013.

About the stamp DESIGN : “With elegant, clear and unequivocal graphics, the stamp represents arms stretched out to the skies, as in an invocation of thirst for life. Raising awareness is everyone’s concern, and a new commitment the first duty of all.”

The stamp was designed after the United Nations’ General Assembly had declared the year 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation, the purpose being to raise general awareness about the possibility of increased cooperation on this precious resource.

Icelandic institutions and non-profit organizations have been involved in international relief efforts, which include digging wells to provide water for people in drought areas. The Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) has been working in several countries drilling for water and digging water wells. The Youth Organization of the National Church has also been actively involved in the relief effort, for instance in Malawi where with the assistance of the Icelandic Church Aid, residents have been digging wells and installing water well pumps, thereby gaining better.

 

Centaurium erythraea – useful and beautiful flower on New German Stamp

Here is a new beautiful stamp from German Post featuring centaury flower. This stamp is part of the continuous series “Flowers”.

The real centaury (Centaurium erythraea) is known for its acerbic taste as bitter herbs or Erdgalle. Who discovered the up to 40 cm high herb for Flowering from July to September, however, not allowed to access. All occurrences of the plant from the genus of gentian plants are protected.

About 30 species are known to grow wild, mostly in Europe, North America, North Africa and the western part of Asia. The five-petalled flowers look like little stars and are often pink, but there are also yellow or white flowers. The flowering period lasts about five days. The centaury has square stems and oval leaves. It’s usually one or two years old.

Noted philatelist and numismatist honoured

Mumbai Coin Society, Mumbai has conferred upon noted philatelist, Numismatist and Autograph Collector of Ahmedabad, Mr Praful Thakkar,  the "MUDRA RATNA PURSKAR" which is a Life Time Achievement Award given to any one for his/her outstanding contribution in the field of Numismatics. The Award is a testimony of Numismatic Community's appreciation of sincere and dedicated efforts during the Life Time. They have given a Silver Plaque and a Certificate.

The Certificate mentions as under:

" The Managing Committee in Consonance with the aims and objectives of the Society had decided earlier to honour persons who have carved out a name for themselves based on Individual achievements in the art of promoting & keeping this hobby of Numismatics.

We feel that it would be a Privilege and Honour to confer upon you this momento in appreciation of your dedicated efforts in creating a Benchmark for all others to follow."

The Award was accepted by Mr Thakkar and his wife Mrs Rekha Thakkar. The Award was given by Mr Vijay Kalantre, President of World Trade Center, Mumbai.

During this occasion Mr Thakkar displayed  12 Frame Exhibit of " 100 Years of Cinema 1913-2013" which showcased 100 Film Personalities' Autographs, Stamps & Currency Notes with Birthdates of Film Personalities in Numbers'. It was highly appreciated by all.

2012 Nobel Peace Prize…

 

The Italian Post has issued a stamp to celebrate the award of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union. The 2012 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the EU "for over six decades [having] contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe" by a unanimous decision of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The Nobel Peace Prize 2012 was awarded to European Union (EU) "for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe".

The issued stamp represents the geographical Europe surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union on a blue background; on the left a stylized olive branch, symbol of peace, is illustrated.

On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes, the Nobel Prizes. As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

Number of Nobel Peace Prizes

93 Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded since 1901. It was not awarded on 19 occasions: in 1914-1918, 1923, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1939- 1943, 1948, 1955-1956, 1966-1967 and 1972.

Why were the Peace Prizes not awarded in those years? In the statutes of the Nobel Foundation it says: "If none of the works under consideration is found to be of the importance indicated in the first paragraph, the prize money shall be reserved until the following year. If, even then, the prize cannot be awarded, the amount shall be added to the Foundation's restricted funds." During World War I and II, fewer Nobel Prizes were awarded.

63 Peace Prizes have been given to one Laureate only.
28 Peace Prizes have been shared by two Laureates.
2 Peace Prizes has been shared between three persons. The 1994 Nobel Peace Prize to Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, and the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkol Karman.

Why is that? In the statutes of the Nobel Foundation it says: "A prize amount may be equally divided between two works, each of which is considered to merit a prize. If a work that is being rewarded has been produced by two or three persons, the prize shall be awarded to them jointly. In no case may a prize amount be divided between more than three persons."

IPHLA 2012 – Mainz , Germany

 

 

  

Hi !

Today I just received my certificate and commemorative medal from IPHLA 2012 Organizing Committee. IPHLA 2012 held in Mainz Germany from 2-4 November 2012, was the world’s largest and one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of literature class in the history of Philately. Here is the story …how I received my award from IPHLA 2012…

But it is a pity that organizers did not send the documents with Certificate and medal by Registered Post but they had posted the packet containing these items  by ordinary post. I received the packet in a very poor condition. It was wet, open, completely torn and the medal was missing from the packet. When I enquired from the Post Office they said that they found a round metallic object in the dispatch mail bag which is with the Postman. Finally the postman handed over the medal after checking the documents of the envelope. In fact the postman could not understand from which packet the medal dropped in the dispatch bag when he emptied the mail bag the medal fell on the ground and the postman was confused.

Such items should have been sent by Registered Mail only by the organizing committee  . In India the authorities who check foreign mail for security purpose, must re-seal the envelope in order to save and protect  the document sent with the envelope and the receiver could  receive it in good condition.
