On 29 April 2016, International Dance Day is celebrated all over the world, as dancers rejoice and share their passions and creativity with millions of people. The day brings together international, national and local organizations, as well as selected individuals active in dance, both amateurs and professionals.

In 1982, the International Theatre Institute (ITI), a partner of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on 29 April on the anniversary of the birth date of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet. The purpose of the International Dance Day is to celebrate Dance, to rejoice in the universality of the art form, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and to bring people together with a common language—Dance. The International Dance Council (CID), another partner of UNESCO, also supports and promotes the art of dance worldwide.

On this occasion,UN posts issued 6 s/s of which one shown on the the top is on RAMAYANA.

Odissi dance featured on new Malaysian stamp

Indian theme on Foreign Stamps

On 3rd February.2016, a set of 5 stamps were issued by Malaysia  Post on traditional dances.One of the stamps in the set  is on ODISSI dance(middle one).and the cancellation is also on odissi dance-HAMSASYA Mudra.It is perhaps for the first time a stamp is issued on Odisha theme beyond India.

Death Cap Mushroom

Estonia Post issued a stamp on a variety of mushroom, Amanita phalloides which is highly poisonous and the stamp shows a skull denoting a highly dangerous variety.

Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the death cap, is a deathly mushroom with a long period of latency as its poisons cause major damage to the liver and the kidneys. The death cap is so poisonous that it should not put even into the same basket with mushrooms intended for the kitchen, which can then become equally poisonous. In Estonia the death cap grows in broadleaved forests in August and September. Its cap is greyish, yellowish, and brownish green, olive brown in the centre. When old the cap is up to 15 cm across and slimy fibrous yellowish brown with no fluffs. The cap is slightly sticky in wet weather but dry and shiny on dry days. The gills do not reach the stem, but come close to it. The stem is white from 5 tp 15 cm long and 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The base of the stem is bulbous, up to 4 cm in diameter and is contained within a cup-like structure called the volva.

New stamps from Liechtenstein …

Here are new stamps from Liechtenstein to be issued on 2 September 2013 featuring themes on Sports car performing Arts and Joint issue.

Sports and Touring Cars…

The car stamps, depicting another four rarities from the world of cars, continues the “Collections in Liechtenstein” series started in autumn 2012. All the sports and touring cars illustrated in this series were built in the 1950s and are today housed in the garages of Liechtenstein collectors, from which they are occasionally brought out for a short drive in Liechtenstein and the adjoining areas.

As in the earlier series the stamps are based not on photographs of these automotive treasures but on oil paintings by the Canadian artist Mark Heine. The lettering on the stamps is stamped in gold foil.

Performing Arts

 

 

New stamps to be issued on 2 September 2013 by Liechenstein on Performing Arts feature   “Dance” (face value CHF 1.00), to “Theatre” (face value CHF 1.40),  “Musical Theatre” (face value CHF 2.00) and  “Cabaret” (face value CHF 4.00).

Joint Issue with Russia

 

   

Liechtenstein Post will issue a joint issue with Russia on 2nd September 2013. The first of the two stamps designed by the Russian Post Office shows the early work “Voyage of the Argonauts” (face value CHF 1.40), completed in 1909 as an entry in a competition at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and depicting an excerpt from the adventurous voyage of the Greek prince Jason with his companions the Argonauts; the second shows the painting “Silum” (face value CHF 2.60), which Zotow painted in 1945 during his exile in Liechtenstein and which shows a typically Zotow view of Liechtenstein’s alpine world. The two stamps are being issued in se-tenant form and are to appear both in Liechtenstein (German) and in Russia (Cyrillic).

New Special Cover from Tanjore

 

A special postal cover and cancellation in honour of K.P. Kittappa Pillai, descendent of Thanjavur quartet, musician, and bharatanatyam guru, was released as part of his birth centenary celebrations here on Sunday.

Releasing the cover and cancellation, Mervin Alexander, Post-Master General, Central Region, Tiruchi, pointed out that India Post has been releasing special postal covers and cancellations in honour of great personalities. Cancellation is more important than release of postal cover as it gives the sovereign symbol of the State to the personality.

Special postal covers and cancellations help in telling the greatness of people to posterity. “Artists keep the art alive by striving against all odds. Government can help them but only the artists can keep the art forms alive. If art and music dies then human race will die,” he said.

Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, Senior Prince and Hereditary Trustee of Palace Devasthanam, received the special postal cover. He said that Thanjavur Quartet — Chinnaiya, Ponnaiya, Sivavanandam, and Vadivelu were employed in the court of Maratta King Serfoji II and contributed for the development of Bharatanatyam and music.

Their descendants like Kittappa Pillai carried forward their mission. The Post Master General released a souvenir, a special issue of music journal Sruthi which brought the edition to commemorate the birth centenary of Kittappa Pillai and a book Thanjai Nalvar Nattiya Surangam written by Kittappa Pillai. The book has been republished for the occasion.

Folk Dances of Belarus and Azerbaijan

 

Here is a beautiful souvenir sheet from Belarus featuring folk dances . Post offices of the Republic of Belarus and Azerbaijan jointly issued a souvenir sheet “Folk dances”. The stamps feature dancers in native costumes of each country performing the national dances – “Kryzhachok” and “Terekeme”.

“Kryzhachok” is a Belarusian folk dance. It is performed by any number of pairs at a rapid pace. The complicated pattern of the dance resembles a geometric ornament. The name of the dance comes from the Belarusian word “kryzh” (cross). The dancing couples form an imaginary cross by their posture and by their hands.

“Terekeme” is an ancient Azerbaijan folk dance. Despite the sad minor tune it is often performed at celebrations and weddings.

New stamps from Bahrain

Bahrain Insurance Day is annually celebrated in March, in appreciation of the efforts of the insurance industry that aims to position Bahrain to be a regional insurance hub.

Bahrain Insurance Association (BIA), received its charter in 1993 and became operational in 1994. Currently the BIA is under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Affairs, comprising of local and foreign insurance companies, reinsurance, brokers and service providers.

The concept of launching the stamp on the 26th Mar 2013, the occasion of Bahrain Insurance Day is in line with the BIA objective to increase insurance awareness amongst the general public.

Hi !

Here are some colorful stamps  on Contemporary Dances from Ireland . The stamps in 4 contrasting colors make stamp design awesome ! This is a wonderful collecting item for art lovers  and collectors of Dance theme !! In this post I am giving some non philatelic news for readers……as I am receiving  news on variety of subjects from the readers  with a request for publication. This new column “ News from Non Philatelic World….” will appear occasionally on this blog  with some interesting select non philatelic  news.

Contemporary Dances

On March 22, 2012, An Post issued four stamps depicting Contemporary Dance themes.

The term contemporary dance conjures up a host of images, some of which can seem contradictory at first. It borrows from the techniques of both ballet and modern dance, yet it is largely unchoreographed. It allows a greater range and fluidity of movement than conventional dance techniques.

Unlike the more established dance traditions, contemporary dance is not directly associated with any specific dance techniques. That’s why it is often described as a dance philosophy, as opposed to a technique of dancing. Non - devotees of contemporary dance are often left baffled by its popularity, claiming that they cannot make sense of it. On the other hand, aficionados of contemporary dance passionately embrace it as an art form that stimulates them intellectually, visually and aurally.

In 2012, An Post celebrates the contemporary dance movements with a set of four Ger Garland designed stamps, each one depicting a unique contemporary dance trend performed by some of Ireland’s foremost dance companies - Fabulous Beast, Irish Modern Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Ireland and CoisCéim.

Likay - Thai performing art on stamps ..

Thailand Post issued a set of four stamps on 4 August 2011, during  national stamp exhibition Thaipex 2011. The stamps feature “Likay”  a popular Thai performing art .

 

Likay: a valuable Thai performing art heritage

 Likay, or Yikay (in popular language) is a folk performing group hired to perform at Buddhist temple's annual fairs or at private houses to celebrate a housewarming, ordination or cremation ceremony. Sometimes Likay is staged as a paid performance inside a temporary enclosure where audiences have to pay a fee to enter. Inside this enclosure is a low, raised stage with settees or benches for performers to sit on during the performance. At the back of the stage is a slightly higher platform for a Pipart musical band (Thai orchestra consisting of the gamelan) and panels of painting of different sceneries as a backdrop to the play. The panels also serve to block off audiences from the performers' dressing area.
Likay can be performed both day and night. The performance usually begins with prelude music to entice audiences to the show, followed by short skirts to introduce the Likay troupe and the play of a particular session as well as to express the troupe’s gratitude to the hosts and the audiences.

The outstanding feature of Likay performance is the extravagant costumes of lead actors which generally consist of an attire adorned with fake diamonds and jewelry. The heroes wear a head band with extra large white ostrich plume and long white socks. The trademark music of Likay is the Radniklerng music which is played throughout the performance.

New themes for US 2012 stamps….

 

 

US Postal Service will issue stamps on Dance, Literature and Nature in 2012.  Three new U.S. stamp subjects were unveiled by the U.S. Postal Service in early August. These are: Innovative Choreographers, O. Henry and Earthscapes.

In 2012, USPS will pay tribute to Isadora Duncan, Jose Limon, Katherine Dunham, and Bob Fosse. Designed to look like posters advertising a performance, the stamp art captures the luminosity and mystery of a live dance performance.

USPS will also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of O. Henry with a stamp in its Literary Arts series. The short stories of O. Henry are beloved for their irony and skillful unfolding of plot; often, they end with a surprise twist. This prolific author wrote nearly 300 tales, most in the final eight years of his life. By the time of his death, he was the most widely read storyteller in America and was internationally admired.

Finally, the Earthscapes issuance offers stamp customers an opportunity to see the world in a new way. The stamp pane presents examples of three categories of earthscapes: natural, agricultural, and urban. The photographs were all created high above the planet's surface, either snapped by "eyes in the sky" - satellites orbiting the Earth - or carefully composed by photographers in aircraft.

Today India Post  issued  a  commemorative postage stamp on Shri  K.M.Mathew .

K. M. Mathew (January 2, 1917 – August 1, 2010) was a former Editor-in-chief of leading Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama.He joined the newspaper as Managing Editor in 1954 and went on to become Editor in chief in 1973.

Mathew launched many publications such as the women’s magazine Vanitha in Malayalam and Hindi, the English magazine The Week, the farmer’s magazine Karshakasree, children’s magazines Balarama, Amar Chitra Katha and Kalikudukka in Malayalam and Magic Pot in English and encyclopedic Manorama Yearbook in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil and Bengali.

In 1998 he received Padma Bhushan. He has received many other awards including Foundation of Freedom of Information Award (1991), National Citizen’s award (1992), Ramakrishna Jay Dayal award (1995), Durga Prasad Chaudhary award (1996) and B D Goenka Award (1996).
