2011 - International Year of Chemistry

chem

Date of Issue : 17 January 2011

The  UN General Assembly declared the year 2011 to be the International Year of Chemistry (IYC). The main theme of IYC 2011 is "Chemistry - Our Life, Our Future" focused on the achievements of chemistry and its contribution to well-functioning human society. Slovakia has issued a stamp on 17 January, commemorating the International Year of Chemistry.

Issue of “International Year of Chemistry 2011” is based on the environmentally motivated idea. We are alive because of the ingenious natural chemical reaction – photosynthesis, which ensures the existence of life on earth. Its exceptional performance and waste-free process makes photosynthesis an example, which shows the direction of chemically motivated human activity.

The basis of the stamp design is made up of two important chemical compounds, water and carbon dioxide, depicted according to the calotte model, which interact in photosynthesis. Colouring of the stamp reflects dual-wise two basic stages of photosynthesis: light – in the form of sunlight and dark – in the form of blue colour symbolizing water. Sunlight and chlorophyll are the catalyst of photosynthesis, which results in oxygen and glucose, two molecules of life, having an essential role in our lives.

The green leaf appears on the first day cover (FDC), representing chlorophyll, along with formulas of entering and generated chemical compounds and completes the picture of this unique photochemical reaction. C60 fullerene is pictured on the FDC stamp. It is one of several allotropic forms of carbon. Fullerenes are of significant importance and they are used in nanotechnology, which is one of the most attractive technologies of chemistry today.

New Stamp from US…

kansasa

Date of Issue – 27 January 2011

Kansas Statehood

The 150th anniversary of Kansas statehood is commemorated with the issuance of this stamp. Kansas is believed to be named after the Kansas River, which bears the name of the Kansa, one of several Native American tribes in the region prior to European settlement. Kansas became the 34th state of US on Jan. 29, 1861.

This stamp is a symbolic artistic snapshot of Kansas that encapsulates many of the state’s most prominent features: history, industry, agriculture, and pioneering ingenuity.

In the foreground stands a type of efficient windmill pioneered in America during the mid-19th century, first made of wood but later out of metal (like the one shown on this stamp) and fitted with a tail, like a weather vane, to change the direction of the wheel relative to the wind.

In the background stand five modern wind turbines that demonstrate continuity and the forward-looking nature of the modern Kansas economy. Below and behind the windmills is the Kansas landscape, with stylized bands of color implying the varying topography of the state. A golden band suggests the undulating plains of western Kansas and implying statewide prosperity in agriculture, while a green band hints at the forests and hills of eastern Kansas.

Queen Victoria stamps set Hong Kong record

hk

(AFP) HONG KONG — A block of 19th-century Hong Kong postage stamps featuring Queen Victoria's head sold for a record $820,000 at a weekend auction in the former British colony, organisers said Monday.

The set of four olive-coloured stamps was described as "extremely rare" with organisers chalking up their unusual colour -- they should have been a brownish-grey tone -- to a printing error.

The pre-sale estimate had been as high as $1.5 million, but it was still the highest price ever paid in the southern Chinese territory for a single lot of Hong Kong stamps. They went to an anonymous buyer.

The face value of each of the stamps, which were issued in 1865, was 96 Hong Kong cents (12 US cents at current conversion rates).

The stamp and banknote sale by auction house Spink on Sunday capped off a busy weekend of auctions in Hong Kong, with British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber's wine collection fetching a higher-than-expected $5.6 million at Sotheby's.

Another wine auction raised about $10.8 million, well above the $9 million organisers had predicted.

"We are excited to see strong participation by Hong Kong, mainland Chinese and our Asian clients, along with numerous bidders back in America participating as well," said John Kapon, chief executive of auctioneer Acker Merrall & Condit, which organised that sale.

Hong Kong has emerged as the world's third-largest auction centre after New York and London, thanks in large part to China's rapidly growing number of millionaires.

Mainland Chinese are regular buyers of the top lots at sales of art, jewellery and wine and Hong Kong has positioned itself as a wine hub for Asia as well as the gateway to China's vast market.

The city was returned to Beijing by colonial power Britain in 1997, but maintains a semi-autonomous status within China.
