From our Readers……

Urdu Philatelic Poem

Here is a combination of philately and Urdu poetry, a philatelic Ghazal sent by our distinguished reader Deepak Dube from Korba (Chhattisgarh). The ghazal from Mr Dube is under the title 'Vaah Daak', seeks to capture  the passion , purpose and purport of Philately . The poetic merit of the piece is that it is a proper Urdu ghazal , set in a traditional Urdu  meter. Hindi and Urdu Readers can read and understand the poem “ Vaah Daak ”….

Mr Deepak Dube writes…

Ghazals, conventionally, do not have a title as every couplet (sher) of it is supposed to be on an independent thought. But, if a poetic piece is in the form of a ghazal and yet has a single subject or thought running continuously through it , it becomes a "musalsal" ('continuous') ghazal , and , as such , qualifies to a title ; just as the present ghazal does. It would  not be exaggerated to claim that 'Vaah Daak' is the first proper metrical Urdu composition on the subject of Philately.

Vaah Daak !

Rock Art on New Brazilian stamp

image

The rock art is a term used to describe man-made drawings on the rocks. This is a prehistoric form to record the accumulation of acquired knowledge and to share culture and customs of a particular community with next generations. This special mean of graphic communication became theme of the special issue by Correios Brazil “History Set in Stone: Rock Art in the Amazon”.

The stamp shows a representation of the east slope of the Serra da Lua located in the town of Monte Alegre where the most important and best-known Amazon cave paintings can be found. On the picture the painter Mario Baratta expresses the value of relationship between man and place chosen as dwelling and shelter. The painter shows the aesthetics of the rock paintings as record of traces left by those who lived about 11,000 years ago.

By this issue the Brazilian post highlights the importance of rock art in the Amazon as a way of understanding the life of prehistoric societies. The stamp values the unique beauty of this type of artistic expression.

Date of Issue : 12 April 2013

Hi !

Here is a beautiful pair of stamps issued by Estonioan Post featuring folk costumes. The stamps are so  beautiful and could be included themes like costumes , Headdresses, culture, tourism etc.

SAAREMAA FOLK COSTUMES - KIHELKONNA AND KARJA

The new stamps from Estonian Post feature folk costumes from Kihelkonna in Western Saaremaa and from Karja in the North-eastern part of the island. The Karja stamp shows an elderly couple in long coats, dress worn around the middle of the 19th century as well as later, with red strings and coloured edges adding zing to the dark fabric. The man’s long coat is edged with a wide striped belt in many colours. Mittens were a necessary part of the attire and when there was no need to put them on, they were stuck in the belt. Men and women throughout Saaremaa invariably wore checkered kerchiefs – men round the neck and women on the head.

The man carries a tobacco pouch, while the woman’s pouch contains needles. The pouches were made of bits of coloured cloth. The woman wears one of the most peculiar Saaremaa headdresses – a round coloured cap, while the young married woman in the Maxicard wears a bonnet peculiar to the eastern part of the island. In Karja it could be either in geometric or floral design. Saaremaa bonnets all have a similar cut, but are still of a totally different appearance. The Kihelkonna woman featured in the postage stamp is shown in a tasselled bonnet general in Saaremaa, although it is different in the various parts of the island. A conspicuous feature, particularly for its shape, is the black crinkled skirt with a coloured lower rim. As for decorations there was a custom to wear several simple brooches one above the other. The First Day Cover shows how they were actually worn. The First Day postmark has a small motif from the Kihelkonna bonnet.
