The special program launched in Germany offers stamps for special reasons having a wide variety of motives. This year a special postage stamp dedicated to bereavement was issued in Germany. This funeral stamp can be used both by the mourners themselves, and by those who want to offer their condolences in letter.

As a motif of the stamp Calla flower is chosen. The white Calla is symbolic of mourning and solidarity with the grieving people. The black bar at the bottom of the stamp underlines its symbolic meaning.

Indian Cuisine - Goan food on Portuguese stamps

Portugal Post issued a set of six stamps featuring Bebinca - Sabores da Lusophony (Flavours of Portuguese) on 5 June 2009. On one stamp Bebinca, also known as bibik or bebinka, is a type of pudding and a traditional Goan dessert is depicted.

Food 1

Date of Issue : 5 June 2009

Bebinca, also known as bibik or bebinka, is a type of pudding and a traditional Goan dessert. The ingredients include plain flour, sugar, ghee (clarified butter) and coconut milk.

Food 2

The dessert has to be baked in layers and traditionally has 16 layers. The dessert is very common in Goan cuisine. In Portugal, it is also a common dessert in Goan restaurants.

In Goa, Portuguese is spoken by an increasingly small minority, it is seen as the 'language of grandparents' because it is no longer taught in schools, nor is it an official language.

Food 4

Goa's national language Konkani, however, has picked up some Portuguese vocabulary, especially Konkani spoken by Catholics.

In addition, Indian Catholics,  often bear Portuguese surnames, despite having no Portuguese background themselves; a relic of the influence that Portugal had in India.

Food 3

Over the centuries, traditions linked to taste have also contributed to this cultural matrix.  Portugal brought new flavours to Europe, viz. spices, but also exported ancestral flavours to Brazil, Africa and Orient, such as deep-fried flavours, stews and desserts. These stamps bring forth interesting examples of the mutual influence of the Portuguese gastronomy on the gastronomy of people from other continents of Asia & Africa

It is common place today to state that gastronomy is an expression of the culture and heritage of the people. This  set of stamps dedicated to the gastronomy of various Portuguese speaking countries, a forgotten but relevant feature of the deep relations that have marked the meeting between Portugal and the peoples from other latitudes.

Joint stamp issue between South Africa and Indonesia

South Africa and Indonesia have jointly released a stamp issue marking 300 years of the link between the two countries. The stamps were officially launched on 15 October in Cape Town .

South Africa and Indonesia have only enjoyed formal diplomatic ties since August 1994, but the link between the two countries stretches back close to three hundred years. The colonisation of Africa and Asia by European powers from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries led to the enslavement of millions of Afro-Asian peoples, and an international slave trade. This slave trade led to the migration of large numbers of Asian and African people to different parts of the world. It was one such stream of people, most of whom were political exiles or prisoners who had opposed the colonisation of their countries that came to the Cape of Good Hope.

Festivals of India - Deepawali

diwali  Screenshot_2

Wishing you all

a very Happy and Prosperous

Deepawali !!

Deepavali marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the Lunar Calendar. It literally  means 'Row of Lights' It celebrates the victory of Goodness over Evil and Light over Darkness - it ushers in the new year. For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes.

image

Deepavali also marks the end of the harvest season in most of India. Farmers give thanks for the bounty of the year gone by, and pray for a good harvest for the year to come. Traditionally this marked the closing of accounts for businesses dependent on the agrarian cycle, and is the last major celebration before winter. Lakshmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead. ...

Diwali - The Festival of Light,  the festival of joy, happiness, fireworks and sweets.

Each year on the dawn of Ammavaasa in the month Kartik the glittering diyas ,the dazzling fireworks, sounds of crackers announces the arrival of the most vibrant festival of Diwali. This 5 day long Hindu festival is celebrated throughout the world with great zeal and fanaticism .Diwali or deepavali is the festival signifying the victory of good against evil.

People from all religions forget their differences and get together to celebrate this vivacious festival of lights. Every home, be it a hut or a mansion is decorated with illuminating Diyas and candles. The entrances are ornamented with flowers and rangolis to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. People wear new clothes, exchange gifts and sweets with each other.

Dhanteras sets the beginning of the festival. Then comes Narakachaturdasi, which symbolizes Lord Krishna's victory over Narakasur. The main Diwali day is devoted to the worship of Goddess lakshmi. The fourth day is celebrated as Parewa or the New Year Day. The last day or Bhai Duj is observed as a symbol of love between sisters and brothers.

Great Bustard

Slovakia Post  has issued a new stamp featuring Great Bustard. Great Bustard (Otis tarda) is Slovakia's heaviest flying bird. It grows up to more than one meter with a wing span of up to 2.5 meters and the heaviest individuals can weigh up to 22 kg. This, originally a steppe bird, inhabits the agricultural landscape at an altitude up to 300 m above sea level. It feeds on both plant and animal food and harder seeds to a small degree. The plant food includes, in particular, leaves, buds, and flowers, whole plants of field crops and weeds.
