New Special Covers at Allahabad during Kumbh Mela..

Indian Postal department today inaugurated 10 post Offices and 4 Mobile post offices in Kumbh Mela area which will provide essential services to the pilgrims during the 55-day-long mela starting from January 14. Director Postal Services Allahabad K K Yadav inaugurated these post offices in the mela area by booking a Speed Post article. On the first day, these post offices booked 42 speed posts and 150 general letters sent by the saints and seers. The mobile post office at the Sangam will be the attraction of the pilgrims where they can drop their letters in the letter box provided on the boat. Special Stamps would be used for the letters sent from the mobile post office at Sangam. Mr Yadav said Department of Post is going to release 6 special covers on different occasions of the bathing days in Kumbh.

Around 52 officials including supervisors and administrative officers have been deployed in the mela area for postal services. Mobile post offices on boats at the Sangam will facilitate pilgrims to shoot letters while taking a holy dip and pilgrims can even avail of water proof envelopes.

Department of Posts will register these letters by using special stamps and arrange to dispatch their destination the same day.

Mr Yadav said department of posts was going to release six special covers with cancellation on different occasions i.e. Makar Sankaranti (January 14), Paush Purnima (January 27) Mauni Amavasya (February 10), Basant Panchmi (February 15), Magh Purnima (February 25) and Mahashivratri (March 10).

The special covers will depict the legend of Kumbh and important bathing occasions. Although the special cover has been released on the occasion previously too, it is the first time the department is going to release separate special covers. Crores of national and international devotees would be able to take home these envelopes as a souvenir.

Kumbh Mela - every 3rd years, rotating through Prayag, Nasik, Haridwar and Ujjain.

Magh Mela - Annual, held every year except years of Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela Held in Magh (Jan-Feb); hence the name. It is organized Only at Allahabad.
