Heartiest congratulations to Baroda Philatelic Society on its 40th Anniversary !!
40th Anniversary of Baroda Philatelic Society
Baroda Philatelic Society was established on 27th April, 1975, with 17 founder members. It is one of the oldest Societies in the state of Gujarat.
Baroda Philatelic Society completed 40 years of its existence on 27th April 2015. A function was organized to celebrate 40th Anniversary of Society on 3rdMay 2015 at Blue Lagoon Restaurant & Banquet, Vadodara.
Shri Vineet Mathur, Postmaster General, Vadodara Region and Shri Ganesh Sawaleshwarkar, Director, Postal Training Centre, Vadodara were present on the occasion as the Chief Guest and Guest of honour respectively. Shri Ashok Bayanwala, Senior Philatelist and honorary member of Society was also present on the dais with Shri Prashant Pandya, President and Timir Shah, Secretary of Baroda Philatelic Society. Function was well attended by members of society.
Shri Pandya brief about the society’s history and activities of society during last 40 years. Founder members, past presidents, vice presidents and secretaries of society were remembered on this occasion.
On the occasion a specially made Cake was cut by guests and one of the founder members of society Shri D. T. Desai. Latest issue of Vadophil, quarterly newsletter of Baroda Philatelic Society with multicolour title pages was released by the guests on the dais.
Shri Ganesh Sawaleshwarkar and Shri Vineet Mathur blessed the occasion and appreciated the activities of the society and congratulated all members for serving philately for the last 40 years. Shri Timir Shah, Secretary, Baroda Philatelic Society, conveyed vote of thanks. Function was followed by dinner.

News from Eastern India Philatelists’ Association, Bhubaneshwar

In a special meeting of EIPA held on 3rd May 2015, it has been decided to hold a special Philatelic Exhibition will be held on Nature and Environment during 26-28, December, 2015 at Bhubaneswar in active participation of Department of Posts. This will be the 3rd Eastern India Philatelic Exhibition and will be named as 'NATUREPEX-2015.
The exhibits relating to Flora & Fauna, Nature, Environment and other related exhibits will be displyed in the exhibition. The exhibition is open to the philatelists of Eastern India i.e. Odisha, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunanchal Pradesh.
The exhibition will be competitive one consisting of 400 frames. 20 % of the total frames will be reserved for Youth categories. In absence of sufficient youth exhibits these will be filled up by other exhibits. The frame fee is rs.200/- per frame.
There will be three types of medals i.e. Gold, Silver and Bronze. Three special cover on nature and environment will be issued. The exhibition will be mainly in three groups i.e. Thematic on Nature, FDC,Special covers & Postal Stationery, Youth and School category all based on nature & environment.
It has also been decided to open about 30 dealer's Booths at the exhibition site. The detailed rules, prospectus and Logo of the exhibition will be released soon after getting confirmation from the Department of Posts.

Buddha Purnima
Greetings on Buddha Purnima
Today is Buddha Poornima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti is the most sacred festivals of Buddhist. Buddha Poornima is celebrated in remembrance Lord Buddha. It is celebrated by Buddhists on different days in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and the South East Asian countries of Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia, and other places all over the world.
It falls on the full moon night in Vaisakha (according to the Hindu calendar that usually falls in April or May).Lord Buddha was the founder of the Buddhist religion and is said to be the ninth avatar of Vishnu. It was on Buddha Poornima that the three important events of Buddha's life took place i.e. his birth, his enlightenment and his death (nirvana).
The main celebrations of Buddha jayanti takes place in Bodh gaya.On this large number of Buddhist devotees from all over the world assemble to pay their respectful homage to Lord Buddha. Besides decorating the temple and area around with colorful Buddhist flags, the morning prayer, colorful procession of the Monks, worship with large offerings, distribution of sweets and snacks takes place.
In other places Prayers, sermons and non-stop recitations of Buddhist scriptures resonate in monasteries, religious halls and homes. On this day the Buddhists bathe and wear only white clothes. People offer incense, flowers, candles and fruits to the statue of Lord Buddha. They spend their entire day listening to discourses on the life and teachings of the Buddha.

Danish Inventions …

Many of the everyday objects which surround us we take for granted. However, some of them were once ground-breaking inventions which made life easier for many people. Some inventions came about more or less by chance, while others resulted from years of painstaking endeavours and never-ending tests and trials. No matter what, many inventions have made our lives easier and dispensed with a whole host of old-fashioned manual processes. What would life be like without refrigerators, for instance? Not to mention vacuum cleaners, escalators and irons ?
Post Danmark issued four stamps featuring four ground-breaking Danish inventions – two from the nineteenth century and two from the twentieth century. All four inventions are on display at the Danish Museum of Science and Technology in Elsinore north of Copenhagen.
THE MALLING-HANSEN WRITING BALL Rasmus Malling-Hansen, who invented the writing ball, was a deaf-mute teacher at the Royal Institute for the Deaf-mute in Copenhagen. Through his work, he realised that sign language was a much faster way of communicating than writing with pen and ink. In 1867, this realisation led to his invention of the writing ball; with its long strutting brass keys, the machine looked a bit like a hedgehog. The keys with the letters were arranged to achieve the fastest possible writing speed. The most frequently used letters are touched by the fastest fingers, with vowels on the left and consonants on the right. The writing ball was exhibited at the Nordic Exhibition in 1872 and was awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878. At the Danish Museum of Science and Technology in Elsinore north of Copenhagen, no less than nine different versions of this fascinating invention are on display.
DRY CELL Wilhelm Hellesen was a butter merchant who was passionately interested in physics and chemistry. By pouring ordinary plain flour into the battery liquids, he created the world’s first dry cell. The viscous liquids meant that the batteries were now far easier to transport. In 1887, the inventor founded the Hellesens battery factory in Copenhagen. The company became an instant success, and following the design of the leaping tiger logo by the illustrator Palle Wennerwald in 1924, the battery made it onto even more of the global export markets. Hellesens was later taken over by Duracell, and the last Hellesen battery was produced in 2004.
LONG JOHN DELIVERY BIKE At a time when all Danish towns were awash with messenger boys on bikes, the bicycle manufacturer Morten Rasmussen Mortensen from Aalborg developed his own Long John delivery bike with a platform placed between the front and rear wheels for transporting goods. The Long John became extremely popular as a cheap form of transport which was ideal for transporting things around, be it dairy produce, crates of beer or groceries in general. The original two-wheeled Long John from 1929 has inspired the modern carrier bikes, which in recent decades have enjoyed a renaissance.
READY-MIX CONCRETE TRUCK Before Kristian Hindhede, a civil engineer, built his truck for delivering ready-mix concrete, mixing concrete was hard manual labour done at the construction site. The ready-mix concrete truck was thus part of the rationalisation measures which helped to automate and streamline the building trade. Also, the invention made it possible to build concrete structures on a much bigger scale. After two years, Kristian Hindhede patented his invention in 1929, both in Denmark and internationally. At roughly the same time, he founded KH Beton, Europe’s first supplier of ready-mix concrete. The red and white-striped Bedford readymix concrete truck depicted on the stamp was a common sight in the 1960s, and is on display at the Danish Museum of Science and Technology.
