2009 - Year of Astronomy

Hi ! This year's EUROPA theme is Astronomy. Commemorating the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s observation of the night sky through a telescope, the UN declared the year 2009 as the “International Year of Astronomy. Many Postal Administrations of Europe and other countries have scheduled special stamps on this theme for this year. Here are some forthcoming issues to come out soon this year. Also see a pair of stamps from Korea on Astronomy theme issued on 15 January 2009 featuring the mysterious look of the universe. Out of the stamps shown here the stamp of Liechtenstein is most beautiful. The stamp to be issued by Aland is also very nice. New Stamp on Braille

Hi ! Louis Braille's Birth Bicentenary is being celebrated this year. Ireland Post has issued a new 55-cent stamp to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth in 1809 of Louis Braille, the inventor of the reading and writing system used by the blind and visually impaired. The stamp features an eye in black ink on a white background with the 55-cent denomination in Braille. The sharp black and white contrast is intended to maximise vision for those with sight impairment. The stamp is Ireland Post's second Braille stamp – the first was issued in 2006 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.! This stamp was published in 1 Feb 2009 Post in Braille Inscription series by mr. Abhai Mishra. In second part please go through some recent philatelic activities held in Orissa. Well I am always very pleased to write about Orissa as I spent a long time there and I am well familiar with the places and philatelic community there. Philatelic Workshop & Exhibition in Orissa
A three day Philatelic Exhibition was organized by the Regional College of management, Bhubaneswar with support of the Eastern India Philatelists' Association and Department of Posts during the 'Basantosav ETHOS-2009', the National Culrural Festival from 30.01.2009 to 01.02.2009 at the auditorium of the college. The exhibits of noted philatelists of EIPA were displayed in 40 frames. The exhibition was inaugurated by Smt. Manisha Mishra, Director Postal Services, Bhubaneswar.

Philatelic Workshop at Puri
On 01.02.2009 a Philatelic workshop was organised by Puri Postal Division at the GPO premises, Puri. About 150 Students from 15 Schools participated the work shop.. Philatelic Quiz and Stamp designed contests were also conducted between the students.

There were three categories for each contest namely Senior(Class-VIII-X), Junior (class-V-VII) and Sub-Junior (ClassI-IV). Shri Ajit Kumar Dash, Secretary, EIPA and Mr. Anil Kumar Dhir Sr. Philatelist of EIPA were appointed as other jury members for the competitions. Shri Niranjan Behera Sr. Supdt. of Posts, Puri presided over the functions. Prizes were also distributed amongst the winners. The other senior Philatelists of EIPA namely Kasinath Sahoo, Haripada Panda and Nrusingha Dash also attended the workshop and assisted in the proceedings.

Australian Legends of Silver Screen

Hi ! There were some philatelic activities in last few days in different parts of the country. The biggest festival of stamps concluded in Ahmedabad on 1st February . Workshop & exhibitions were held in Orissa and Chandigarh. Here are some highlights with photographs of Festival of Stamps. Recently Australia issued stamps on 22 January 2009 honouring Australian legends of Silver Screen. Here are the bright and beautiful stamps and FDC. Festival of Stamps in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Philatelists' Association organized one of the biggest Festival of stamps in Ahmedabad from Jan 30-Feb 1, 2009. The festival was inaugurated by Lt. Col. D.K.S.Chauhan, PMG, Gujarat Circle. Philatelists and more than 50 dealers from different states attended this festival with great enthusiasm. There were many stalls of stamps and philatelic items by the dealers of different cities.

A Special Cover and three Stamp Booklets were released during the festival. Noted philatelists of India Mr. Madhukar Jhingan, Mr Manik Jain, Mr. A.S. Mittal and Mr. Markand Dave were honoured by Gujarat Philatelists, Association with life-time achievment award for their valuable services to the field of philately .

Glittering Coins from Gibraltar

Hi ! I have just published February issue of Rainbow Stamp News on Blog. Please view at http://www.rainbowstampnews.blogspot.com/ for new articles and updates on philately. In today's Post some glittering coins recently issued by Gibraltar. 11th November 2008 marked the start of the final journey of the great ship Queen Elizabeth 2. After calling at various “Friendly Ports” on route, the “Queen of the Oceans” proceeded to her final resting place at Palm Jumeirah Dubai. The QE2 as she is commonly known, has sailed the world's seas for almost forty years, and has travelled over five million miles in the process, which is further than any other ship in history! To celebrate the end of an era, Gibraltar brought out The Final Voyage of the QE2 Silver Proof 5oz Coin. Struck in Sterling Silver to a dazzling proof finish, this imposing 5oz coin features an image of the ship herself against the Rock of Gibraltar. Some more Gibraltar coins given below. Biloxi Lighthouse

Hi ! I have selected a beautiful lighthouse for today's post which is scheduled to be issued in 2009 by US Postal service. .The 1848 landmark is one of five Gulf Coast lighthouses that will be part of a series of stamps. The lighthouses were chosen because they've weathered so many powerful storms, including Hurricane Katrina. "It's called an enduring landmark, an icon for Biloxi and for the Gulf Coast. And what's so important about this lighthouse is despite all the storms that had occured, in 1915, 1947, 1969, Camille and Katrina, people could always see that the lighthouse has persevered through all of it. In second part a piece of postal stationery scheduled for release in February is a 27¢ Miami University postal card. The card, part of the long-running Historic Preservation series, will be issued Feb. 17 with a first-day ceremony at the school in Oxford, Ohio.In regular series some stamps issued on Braille Inscriptions.
