Kusiwa graphic art on stamp

image

Date of Issue : 29 October 2014

Brazilian Post issued a special stamp on 29th October, dedicated to graphic art known as kusiwa. The stamp release depicts the example of such an unusual art.

The Wajapi of the Tupi-guarani cultural-linguistic group are indigenous to the northern Amazonian region. Some 580 Wajapi live in 40 small villages on a specially designated territory in the state of Amapá. The Wajapi have a long history of using vegetable dyes to adorn their bodies and objects with geometric motifs.

This graphic art is known as kusiwa and its designs are applied with red vegetable dyes extracted from the roucou plant mixed with scented resins. The Wajapi consider that the technical and artistic proficiency required to master the drawing technique and the preparation of the dye cannot be attained before the age of forty. Commonly recurring motifs include the jaguar, anaconda, butterfly and fish.

Kusiwa designs refer to the creation of humankind and come alive through a rich corpus of myths. This body art, closely linked to Amerindian oral traditions, possesses multiple meanings on socio-cultural, aesthetic, religious and metaphysical levels. Indeed, kusiwa constitutes the very framework of Wajapi society and is endowed with significance extending far beyond its role as a graphic art form. This coded repertory of traditional knowledge is perpetually evolving as indigenous artists are constantly reconfiguring the motifs and inventing new patterns.

Commemorative Stamp on Liver Transplantation in India - 4th November 2014

The Department of Posts released a commemorative stamp on Liver Transplantation in India on 4th November 2014 on the occasion of 15 years of Liver Transplantation in India. The Stamp was released by Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Communications & IT in a function held at Hotel Lalit, New Delhi. Shri S. K. Sinha, Member Postal Services Board and Dr. Pratap C. Reddy Chairman Apollo Hospital Group were also present in the function.

image

The only definite treatment for liver failure is a liver transplantation. During a liver transplant, the diseased liver is removed and replaced with a healthy one. The first successful Liver Transplantation was performed on a child in 1967. Since then, there has been tremendous progress in the complicated process of liver transplantation, which in 1983 was confirmed to be a valid procedure in cases of end stage liver disease (ESLD), in a consensus by the National Institutes of Health. The first successful liver transplantation in India was performed at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi on 15th November, 1998 and since then around 4,500 such transplants has been done in the country.

The liver performs various functions that are essential for the well being of the body. Two types of liver transplant are possible: living donor transplant and cadaveric transplant. In living donor transplant, a portion of the liver is removed from a healthy person and placed into the patient. Since the liver has the capacity to regenerate, both the donor and the recipient liver portions grow to a normal size in a few weeks. In a cadaveric transplant the donor is a brain dead person.

New stamps on Christmas

image

Date of Issue : 11 November 2014

Here are new stamps from Spain Post  for this year’s Christmas . The stamps will be be released on 11th of November. The stamps and sheet in the form of a Christmas card is just beautiful.

The Class A stamp shown above bears the image of a stained-glass window depicting a typical scene of the birth of Baby Jesus, with the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. It is accompanied by the message “Merry Christmas” written in the four official languages spoken in Spain. Cold foil was added to the stamp to accentuate the colours and give greater depth to the stained-glass image.

image

The Class B stamp is presented in mini-sheet format, made up of six equal stamps joined together to form a Christmas tree. The mini-sheet as a whole frames a Christmas card full of good wishes to “Light up Your Christmas”. This issue brings the novelty of thermal ink, a substance that gives the impression that the stars shine when you slide your fingers over them.

The Christian community celebrates Christmas Day or the Birth of Christ on 25th December. Some countries, such as Spain, Italy, the Philippines and Latin America have the tradition of setting up a Nativity crèche with the classic figures representing the Birth of Christ, along with angels, shepherds, the Three Wise Men and characters typical in each area. The tradition in other countries and areas, such as Germany, France and Northern Europe, dictates decorating a Christmas tree, normally of the pine family because they are evergreens and symbolise the concept of eternity.
