Ljubljansko Barje wetlands

Slovenia is a land of many natural treasures. This country stands from others by its gorgeous national parks and reserves. The tourists flow in Slovenia to contemplate the beautiful landscapes and gorgeous scenery. One on of those beauties is depicted on a new Slovenian stamp issue.

The Ljubljansko Barje wetlands are a unique blend of meadows, fields, hedges and channels where open green spaces meet the sky and the Ljubljanica, the river that has helped create this area over the course of history. Thanks to the traditional methods used to cultivate the land, the area is still distinguished by great biodiversity and diversity of landscape.

Water meadows, flood meadows and thousands of kilometers of drainage channels attract moisture-loving representatives of the animal kingdom. The Ljubljansko Barje offers a home to several hundred species of birds and to numerous butterflies, dragonflies and amphibians. The mutually dependent habitats of the Ljubljansko Barje clean the air, water and soil, help cool hot summers and offer people an opportunity for relaxation and discovery in the direct vicinity of Slovenia’s capital city.

Six thousand six hundred years ago the Ljubljansko Barje was a lake, on the shores of which more than forty piledwellers’ settlements grew up over the course of 3,000 years. In 2002 the oldest wooden wheel in the world was discovered in the Ljubljansko Barje. Part of a two-wheeled cart, it was made by an expert wheelwright 5,200 years ago.

In 2011 two groups of Barje pile-dwellings were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of their outstanding universal value. This combination of valuable natural features and rich cultural heritage today enjoys protected status within the Ljubljansko Barje Nature Park. The best way to discover its treasures is on foot, by bicycle or by boat.

Celebrating 175th Anniversary of World's First Adhesive Postage

Chandigarh Philatelic Club, the pioneer philatelic club in the north, having been established in 1967 emerged pioneer once more by Celebrating 175th Anniversary of World's First Adhesive Postage  on the 6th May, 2015 in Chandigarh.

More than 300 students of St. Stephen's School, their teachers and eminent philatelists of the Club participated in the event.

A presentation on Penny Black, Two Penny Blue and Penny Red was made  by the undersigned.The original stamps from my collection were un-veiled by me during the presentation.

The gathering was enlightened about the evolution of Penny Black after the Postal Reforms by Sir Rowland HIll. Process of printing such stamps was also explained to them.

Afterwards, a Special Cover, designed internally for the Club, was also released to mark the Anniversary.Subsequently, students and their teachers were individually taken towards the exhibits and their queries answered.

Here are new stamps from Tokelau featuring Tokelau Language. The stamps will be issued on October 13, 2015.

With the majority of Tokelauans living outside of Tokelau, it’s vital to encourage the use of Tokelauan language and to celebrate Tokelauan culture. Tokelau Language Week began in 2013 as a way to encourage people to embrace and use Tokelauan in their homes and communities to keep this vibrant language alive.

This issue is the second time Tokelau Language Week have been marked with a set of stamps ‒ last year the stamps contained basic phrases in Tokelauan, while this year it concerns the counting in Tokelauan. Each stamp includes a number as well as an object from Tokelauan life, written in English and Tokelauan.

45c ‒ Tahi Te Fala (One pandanus tree)

The pandanus tree is important in Tokelauan culture and is used in many aspects of Tokelauan daily life, such as creating vaka (canoes).

45c ‒ Lua Ia Tuluma (Two tackle boxes)

Traditional tackle boxes are carved from wood and are oval shaped with a fitted lid, which is attached with a cord of plaited coconut fibre. Fishing is an important part of Tokelauan culture, with the fishing communities all using their own methods to catch fish.

45c ‒ Tolu Ia Motu (Three atolls)

Tokelau consists of three atolls (ring shaped coral reefs that protrude from the ocean) ‒ Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. Each atoll consists of several coral islets, with Nukunonu being the largest but Fakaofo having the highest population.

45c ‒ Fa Ia Olo (Four wickets)

Kilikiti (cricket played island-style) is a popular pastime in Tokelau, with it even becoming a Christmas tradition. Almost entire villages join in and teams can be divided by boundaries, committees or associations.

45c ‒ Lima Ia Tupa (Five crabs)

Tokelau has ten recorded species of crab scuttling along its shores. Some species are considered a delicacy, while others are fairly inedible to humans and are used as bait for fishing.

$1.40 ‒ Ono Ia Lelefua (Six butterflies)

Tokelau has three recorded species of butterfly ‒ the blue moon, common crow and meadow argus. All three species are attractive to look at and are relatively large.

$1.40 ‒ Fitu Ia Ika (Seven fish)

Tokelau’s waters are home to a truly diverse range of marine life, with more than one hundred recorded species of fish found near the tropical nation.

$1.40 ‒ Valu Ia Ili (Eight fans)

Weaving is a craft that remains popular in Tokelau, with fans being in demand in Tokelau’s tropical weather. The average temperature in Tokelau is around 28 degrees celsius.

$1.40 ‒ Iva Ia Vaka (Nine canoes)

Vaka reflect Tokelau’s communal approach to fishing. Most vaka accommodate five people and are usually made from different trees ‘sewn’ together and held with a cord.

$1.40 ‒ Hefulu Ia Matau (Ten fishhooks)

Matau are fishhooks and are part of just one of the many techniques used to fish in Tokelau. Matau are hand-carved and are usually made from wood.

Tokelau

New Zealand Post has entered into a 5-year exclusive agreement to design, produce and distribute stamps for the Pacific nation of Tokelau. Situated in the Central Pacific, Tokelau is a territory of New Zealand and is home to approximately 1,400 people. Made up of three small coral atolls, Fakaofo, Nukunonu and Atafu, it enjoys a tropical climate and is home to a vast array of marine life.

UTTARPEX - 2015

 

1st Zonal Philatelic Exhibition Uttar Pradesh & Uttrakhand

Here is the Prospectus of Uttarpex 2015. The following points to be noted :

1.The Prospectus states that there is no entry fee for youth class but still it says that entry fee for Junior Class is Rs 50.

2.There is Rs 1000 security fee per frame  for  participants . Imagine if a person is sending about 15 frames , he will have to pay Rs 15000 + entry fee with the entry form. The fee is usually deposited after the acceptance of the entry.

3.It is not stated in the form the mode of payment.

New Stamps on Christmas

The autumn has just begun but Post Offices from around the world have already unveiled their Christmas stamps.Aland Post will issue two beautiful stamps for this year’s Christmas on 9th October 2015.

The two 2015 Christmas stamps have the denominations “Julpost” and “Europa”. Stamps with the no-value indicator “Julpost” may be used for sending Christmas greetings within Åland and to Sweden and Finland at a reduced price for a limited period prior to Christmas.Any adjustment of the current Christmas postage of €0.70 for the coming season will be determined in late autumn. The no-value indicator “Europa” equals priority postage for mail up to 20 gram (currently €1.20).

Senior philatelist Smt. Kusumben Mehta  is no more…..

I am sorry  inform the Readers  that  leading Philatelist of India Mrs Kusum  Mehta, w/o Sh. Dhirubhai Mehta passed away on  6th October 2015 at Mumbai. Mrs. Mehta was a keen Philatelist and  she was a  life member of PCI, PSI & so many other Philatelic & social organisations.My heartfelt condolences to Shri  Dhirubhai Mehta and all family members, may God give them strength to bear this loss.

New stamps on Flower from Poland

Here are two beautiful stamps  issued recently by Polish Post featuring Rose and Lotus. The design of Rose stamp is exquisite. Kudos to the designer of these stamps. I always love Polish stamps as I find its designs as one the most beautiful stamp designs in the world. I thank Polish Post for issuing such beautiful stamps !!
