New Special Cover : Baobab Tree

Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav released a special cover on the historical tree 'Baobab' situated on the banks of Ganga in Prayagraj.The age of the 'Baobab tree' situated near the Sangam coast in Jhunsi, Prayagraj is estimated between 750 to 1350 years old, a rare tree of the Adansonia Digitata species of Africa. The historical and rare tree 'Baobab' situated on the banks of Sangam in Prayagraj is now on special postal cover.

Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav said that Prayagraj and its Sangam coast have preserved many mythological, historical and rich heritages for centuries. The 'Baobab tree' of the Adansonia Digitata species of Africa is also one of them. In such a situation, its historicity, scientific and medicinal qualities will be spread worldwide through special cover with cancellation and it will also facilitate to connect it with research and tourism. Shri Yadav said that there has been curiosity for centuries about this ancient and huge tree located on a huge mound of soil on the left bank of the holy river Ganga in Jhunsi, it is also called 'Vilayati Imli' in folklore. It is worth noting that the past of the Jhunsi area is documented by archaeological evidence which corresponds to five cultural phases from the Chalcolithic period to the early Medieval period.

Director Postal Services Shri Gaurav Srivastava said that the thickness of the trunk of the 'Baobab' tree is 17.3 meters and the flower of this tree is large and the fruit is long and green in colour. It is believed that Baba Sheikh Taki Shah came here from Karachi in the 15th century, lived here. Soaking the bark of this tree in water and drinking it reduces stomach ache, heartburn, and the bark is also considered beneficial in urine infection.

Senior Superintendent of Post Offices Shri Abhishek Srivastava told that the special cover released on Baobab tree will be available for sale with price of Rs. 25 in the Philatelic Bureau, Prayagraj Head Post Office.

On this occasion, Senior Postmaster Tanveer Ahmed, Assistant Director Masoom Raza Rushdi, Rajesh Srivastava, Deputy Superintendent of Post Offices Pramila Yadav and many other officials and philatelists were present.
