New stamp on Int. Year of Crystallography

image

Date of Issue : 1 September 2014

One hundred years ago, Max von Laue received the Nobel Prize for proving that X-rays are diffracted by crystals. This discovery was simultaneously the birth of modern crystallography which has used X-rays for the non-destructive analysis of the structure of solid matter ever since then. On the occasion of this anniversary, the UNO proclaimed 2014 the International Year of Crystallography. Liechtenstein Post will issue a set of two stamps on  1st September 2014 to commemorate the special year of Crystallography.

image

Through the “Metamorphosis Sequence 1″ (value: CHF 1.00) and “Metamorphosis Sequence 2″ (value: CHF 2.00) stamps, the Philately Liechtenstein is drawing attention to this influential field of science. Set out in a row, the stamps show how a crystal grows over thousands of years.

Crystallography plays a crucial role in the development of almost all new materials for everyday products. The fields of application of this branch of science are extremely diverse and also affect developments in agriculture, aerospace, automotive and aircraft construction, electronics, cosmetics and pharmacy. However, crystallographers not only study the structure of materials, they also use this knowledge to change structure and thus give materials new properties.

The Lindau Messenger – an ancient courier service

image

Date of Issue : 1 September 2014

The Liechtenstein Post will issue a special stamp on 1st September 2014 to commemorate an ancient courier service The Lindau Messenger”. The Lindau Messenger was a courier service operated between Lindau at Lake Constance and the Italian city of Milan up to the beginning of the 19th century. The Lindau Messenger transported goods, money and letters, crossing through areas of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Italy on his way.

Each of the first four countries named is currently issuing its own stamp on this topic. The Liechtenstein stamp “Lindauer Bote” (value: CHF 1.40) shows suitable pictorial elements and gives the names of each stop. In addition, the altitude profile of the route, which reached its peak on Splügen Pass at 2113 metres above sea level, is depicted on the small 8-stamp sheet.

The exact date when the Lindau Messenger started to operate is not documented. However, it is assumed that he was already travelling along the arduous route on a fairly regular basis towards the end of the 15th century. In good weather, he completed the journey in five-and-a-half days but in snow and ice the trip took quite a bit longer.

At that time, Lindau and Milan were trading centres and re-loading points at crossroads of traffic routes. They thus became the points of departure for transports across the Alps. The messenger brought home luxury goods such as silk, gold thread, textiles of all kinds, exotic fruit and weapons.

Towards the end of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th century, individual travellers were also allowed to accompany the messenger, the most famous of whom was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He used the guidance of the Lindau Messenger across the Alps in May 1788 when returning to Germany from his travels in Italy and paid 122 guilders for it. In 1826 the transport services of the Lindau Messenger were stopped for political and economic reasons.

History of playing cards on stamps

image

Date of Issue : 8 August 2014

The history of playing cards is one of mystery and intrigue. Believed to have originated from China as far back as 1294 before they arrived in Southern Europe by the late 1300s, and spread quickly by trade and colonialism where they adapted to different cultures in which they found themselves.

image

Indeed it is believed that the core elements of the decks and suits that we have today originated in the 15th Century from the red and black colour scheme of France during that period. By the late 19th century the Isle of Man had developed into a popular tourist destination drawing visitors from across England. As the demand for the sale of novelty goods grew with holiday makers wishing to commemorate their trip, Warrington businessman, Samuel Webb, saw this opportunity and opened his first shop in Duke Street Douglas.

He then commissioned a set of playing cards featuring iconic Manx elements as a souvenir for tourists and authorised London based designers and printers Charles Goodall and Sons to produce the first set. Over the next 57 years they with other companies, produced approximately 30 different designs leaving a unique legacy in playing cards history which has been beautifully commemorated into this collector's issue.

The six stamps incorporate select images from local expert Mike Goodall's exceptional collection. A descendant of Charles Goodall, Mike has worked closely with Isle of Man stamps and coins to provide access to and collate six of the most iconic in his extensive catalogue, and which also reflect the changing printing techniques of the era from engravings through to photography and ink. Each scene depicted, from Bradda Head and Peel Castle to the Laxey Wheel and the Groudle Wheel, is set against a vibrant background which corresponds to the rear of the original card, giving a complete representation with every unique stamp.

Exclusive Exhibition on the Indian National Flag

image

‘Indian National Flag’ was born in its present form on 22nd July 1947".

The National Flag of India is a horizontal rectangular tricolour of deep saffron, white and India green; with the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel, in navy blue at its centre. It was adopted in its present form during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly held on 22 July 1947, when it became the official flag of the Dominion of India. The flag was subsequently retained as that of the Republic of India. In India, the term "tricolour" almost always refers to the Indian national flag. The flag is based on the Swaraj flag, a flag of the Indian National Congress designed by Pingali Venkayya.

The flag, by law, is to be made of khadi, a special type of hand-spun cloth of cotton or silk made popular by Mahatma Gandhi. The manufacturing process and specifications for the flag are laid out by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The right to manufacture the flag is held by the Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission, who allocate it to the regional groups.

Invasive plants of Belarus..

image image image image

Date of Issue : 25 July 2014

On July 25, 2014 Ministry of Communications and Information of the Republic of Belarus will issue stamps “Canadian Goldenrod” and “Sosnowski Hogweed” from the series “Invasive plants of Belarus.”

Face grade “A” corresponds to the rate for sending a simple letter weighing up to 20 gram within Belarus.Face brand «N» corresponds to the tariff of a simple non-priority mail cards.

Invasive plants are introduced species that can thrive in areas beyond their natural range of dispersal. These plants are characteristically adaptable, aggressive, and have a high reproductive capacity. The most prominent representatives of the invasive plant species widely distributed on the territory of Belarus, are Canadian goldenrod and parsnip Sosnowski.

Canadian goldenrod is an allergenic plant. Canada goldenrod is a perennial distinguished by numerous small yellow flowers located in pyramid-shaped clusters at the top of individual, unbranched, leafy stems.  This species spreading in the meadow and riparian ecosystems violates the structure of crops, which leads to oppression and even complete displacement of native plants.

Parsnip Sosnowski – very large (up to 3 meters) plant, in contact with skin causes burns. In Belarus grows on field edges and roadsides, almost completely displacing the usual places because of its vegetation
