Save the Children…

image

Date of issue: 27 May 2013

Here I wish to share a nice stamp issued by Danish Post for the cause  “ Save the childdren from violence and let them grow in a happy environment”.The design of the stamp is very appealing. This is a charity stamp. The motif, which features the silhouette of a girl, is made up of crisscrossing words in different colors. If you study it under a magnifying glass, you will see that the words tell a child’s story.

Millions of children worldwide are hit, kicked, pushed, beaten, humiliated and threatened at home. In the average Danish eighth-grade class, one in five pupils has been the victim of parental violence.

The 2013 charity stamp supports Save the Children, which fights for children’s right to care, security and protection. Profits from the stamp will support Save the Children’s work to combat violence against children. Since 1986, the surcharge on charity stamp has been DKK 0.50. In order to raise even more money for charity, Post Danmark has decided to raise the surcharge per stamp to DKK 1.00.

Save the Children’s work

Save the Children, founded in 1945, is the world’s largest independent children’s rights organisation, and operates in 120 countries. Its work is based on the UN Children’s Convention, which aims to ensure that all children have rights on an equal footing with adults.
The core of Save the Children’s work consists of education and protection. The organisation provides emergency aid in response to disasters and conflicts, and works with children to fight child labour, poverty, bullying, violence and sexual abuse.
Mimi Jakobsen has been Secretary General of Save the Children for 12 years, ably supported by approx. 1,000 volunteers in 61 local associations across the country, and more than 17,000 members, donors and sponsors.

Stop violence against children!

Being beaten is one of the worst things that can happen to a child. Children who are exposed to violence or who witness violence in the home can be left physically and psychologically scarred for life. It is every adult’s responsibility to stop violence against children, protect them and guarantee their right to grow up in a healthy and safe environment. Everybody has a duty to react, no matter how difficult it might be.

Violence is taboo and can be difficult to talk about. But nobody should fail to act if a child is being abused. “Save the Children does not turn a blind eye, but gets actively involved in stopping violence,” Jakobsen explains. “We also do everything in our power to make a noise when children are exposed to violence. In particular, we must hold decision-makers responsible for ensuring that something is done about the problem.”

In addition to advising parents on how to interact with their children and bring them up without using violence, Save the Children provides information to teachers and educators on better ways of helping vulnerable children and their families if they suspect that a child is being physically abused.

Tel Aviv 2013 : Int. Stamp Exhibition

A large international stamp exhibition with free entrance to the public opened on Sunday at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds.Called Tel Aviv 2013, it will feature numerous rare stamp collections and competitions between collectors, and will mark the 65th anniversary of the release of the Doar Ivri stamps, the first series to have been issued by the nascent State of Israel. The exhibition opens daily at noon, and will be open to the public until 8 p.m. on Thursday.

At the exhibition will be collectors from a large number of countries, including the US, considered the leading stamp-collecting country, and Russia, where stamp collecting as been on the rise since the Soviet Union’s fall and is approaching American levels, according to the organizers. The popularity of stamp-collecting in Israel is considered to fall somewhere between that of the two nations, and so the Russians would have to surpass the Israelis to pose a threat to the Americans.

Israel Philatelic Service director Yaron Ratzon said on Sunday that the organizers expect many participants and that the service has prepared special postal memorabilia and stamp issues for the event. Visitors will be able to pose for photos that will be incorporated into limited issue stamps featuring the exhibition’s banner.

Endangered Species from Desert to Arctic…

image

Israel Post will issue  a souvenir sheet on 11th June 2013. The souvenir sheet features a Dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas) and a Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) against the background of their natural habitats.

Despite the great climatic differences between Israel and Greenland, both countries face similar challenges. Each lies in an area characterized by extreme temperatures and large portions of their land are desert areas. Israel is located on the edge of a dry desert and Greenland lies in a polar desert. Both of these limit the availability of inhabitable land, making it imperative to maintain a balance between human development and conservation of the local animal kingdom.

Israel is located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, at the edge of the Sahara
desert belt. The arid Negev desert in the south encompasses some 60% of Israel’s overall area, thus most Israelis live in the central and northern portions of the country, and mainly along the coastal plain.

The density of Israel’s population and the intensive development of its agriculture have put great pressure on the natural habitats of its wildlife. Many animals have been forced into ever decreasing habitats and some, such as the Dorcas gazelle, have reached the point of being endangered.

The Dorcas gazelle used to be common in the desert areas of Eretz Israel and the surrounding countries, however it was displaced by human activity and severely compromised as the result of unchecked hunting. When the State of Israel was established, laws limiting hunting were put into place. Strict enforcement of these laws in recent years has helped to save the gazelle. The Dorcas gazelle population, which was on the brink of extinction, has begun to recover and now numbers hundreds of animals.

The State of Israel is the last place in the world where the continued existence of the Dorcas gazelle is ensured. Environmental protection entities in Israel invest great efforts in conserving this beautiful animal, with the hope that its population will continue to thrive.

Greenland, the largest island in the world, is located in the Arctic region and its climate is very much affected by its proximity to the North Pole. Most of Greenland is covered by an ice sheet, which is thousands of meters thick in the central portion of the island. During the long winter season, the sea surrounding Greenland freezes and also becomes covered with a thick ice sheet.

The cold water surrounding the island provides plentiful food which sustains an abundant population of marine animals. The large schools of fish attract many marine mammals, such as seals, to Greenland’s shores, which are hunted by the world’s largest land carnivore, the Polar bear.

In recent years, there has been growing concern regarding the future of the Polar bear population. There are various reasons for this, including competition with humans for habitats, hunting and seawater pollution, however the main problem stems from global warming. Glacial melting and reduced marine ice areas greatly curb the Polar bear’s ability to hunt the marine animals it needs to survive.

Oregano–aromatic herb on stamp

image

Here are some beautiful issues from Cyprus and Taiwan. Cyprus post issued an aromatic stamp featuring oregano. Chunghwa Post  issued a set of Greeting stamps.

Oregano

Oregano – or “rouvanos” – is a member of the Lamiaceae family. It is an aromatic bush or semi-bush growing up to 100cm tall with spade-shaped, succulent and thick hairy leaves.

It is a species native to Cyprus, restricted mainly to the Pafos forest area and thrives in rocky areas in various habitats, at an altitude between 200-100m. It is used extensively in cooking and is one of the most popular herbs in the Mediterranean cuisine. Oregano is effective against headaches and insomnia and acts as a cure for stomach ailments. It also has analgesic and sedative properties. Its essential oils are extracted and used in the perfumery and pharmaceutical industry.

Oregano can be used as an ornamental plant and provides ground cover in combination with other species. It is also used in rock gardens and pots. It thrives in well-drained soil and can be planted from seed.

Chunghwa Post released a set of “Congratulations Postage Stamps” in 2012. Now it is following up with a second set of four stamps, each featuring one pair of tropical fish, swans, penguins or mandarin ducks. The stamps have round perforated centers with a predominately orange and yellow color scheme, with a red background that features the double-happiness character, which is commonly used in Chinese culture to celebrate marriage. The area surrounding the round center features a grid of double-happiness characters, which convey a sense of glad tidings. The designs follow:

1. Tropical Fish (NT$3.5): A pair of enraptured tropical fish is sealing their love with a kiss. The moving scene conveys the idea of “angelic lovers being lifted to the clouds.”

2. Swans (NT$3.5): The male swan wears a crown and the female swan a lace bridal veil. The scene demonstrates the idea of loving bonds that last “till death do them part.”

3. Penguins (NT$5): The male penguin wears a bowtie and dons a stovepipe hat and the female wears a lace bridal veil. The illustration symbolizes the idea of happiness and love everlasting.

4. Mandarin ducks (NT$5): The female duck bashfully turns her head to look at the male, symbolizing that they will be together through thick and thin over the journey of their lives.
