World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day

The world is marking this Sunday (May 31) the World No Tobacco Day, which was established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) with the purpose of sensitising the largest possible number of people on the risks of consuming tobacco and its by-products. The member states of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. It draws global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to its negative health effects. The day aims to reduce the 5.4 million yearly deaths from tobacco related health problems. The WHO invites people to reflect on the publishing of warnings in packages on the damages that tobacco causes to health.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2009

The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2009 is "Tobacco Health Warnings", with an emphasis on the picture warnings that have been shown to be particularly effective at making people aware of the health risks of tobacco use and convincing them to quit. More and more countries are fighting back against the epidemic of tobacco by requiring that packages of tobacco show the dangers of the product's use, as called for in guidelines to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Legends of Hollywood - Marilyn Monroe

Hi ! In today's Post I have a beautiful sheetlet issued by US Postal Service on famous Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe. It was issued on 1 June 1995. Each stamp is perforated with star on all four corners and also bears her autograph. This sheetlet is very exclusive with the close up of the legendary actress. Here is a Nice cover from Luxembourg which I received a with a nice Post Card from Amarilis. Thanks for this lovely Post Card from the beautiful country . It features picturesque scenes of Luxembourg. The cover bears 3 nice stamps on Music Festival, Aircraft and Euro currency. This is all for Today....Till Next Post....Have a Nice Time...

Marilyn Monroe (1 June 1926 – 5 August 1962), born Norma Jeane Mortenson but baptized Norma Jeane Baker, was an American actress, singer and model.Marilyn Monroe's career as an actress spanned 16 years. She made 29 films, 24 in the first 8 years of her career. After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Her early roles were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) were well received. She was praised for her comedic ability in such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire and The Seven Year Itch, and became one of Hollywood's most popular and glamorous performers.
The typecasting of Monroe's "dumb blonde" persona limited her career prospects, so she broadened her range. She studied at the Actors Studio and formed Marilyn Monroe Productions. Her dramatic performance in William Inge's Bus Stop was hailed by critics, and she won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Some Like it Hot.

The final years of Monroe's life were marked by illness, personal problems, and a reputation for being unreliable and difficult to work with. The circumstances of her death, from an overdose of barbiturates, have been the subject of conjecture. Though officially classified as a "probable suicide", the possibility of an accidental overdose has not been ruled out, while conspiracy theorists argue that she was murdered. In 1999, Monroe was ranked as the sixth greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute.

Poetry by Monroe

I could have loved you
once and even said it
But you went away,
When you came back it was too late
And love was a forgotten word.
Remember?

O, Time
Be Kind
Help this weary being
To forget what is sad to rememberLoose my loneliness,
Ease my mind,
While you eat my flesh.

I left my home of green rough wood,
A blue velvet couch.
I dream till nowA shiny dark bush
Just left of the door.
Down the walk
Clickity clack
As my doll in her carriage
Went over the cracks-"We'll go far away.

"Don't cry my doll
Don't cry
I hold you and rock you to sleep
Hush hushI'm pretending now
I'm not your mother who died.

Help helpHelp
I feel life coming closer
When all I want to do is die.

Famous Quotes by Marilyn Monroe

-Before marriage, a girl has to make love to a man to hold him. After marriage, she has to hold him to make love to him.

-It's better to be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone - so far.

-Fame will go by and, so long, I've had you, fame. If it goes by, I've always known it was fickle. So at least it's something I experience, but that's not where I live.

-Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.

-Husbands are chiefly good as lovers when they are betraying their wives.

-I have feelings too. I am still human. All I want is to be loved, for myself and for my talent.

Special Cover on Platinum Jubilee of Epsom Derby Triumph of Maharaja Vijaysinhji of Rajpipla

Epsom Derby is considered one of the most prestigious flat thoroughbred horse races in the world. The race takes place each year on the first weekend in June at Epsom Downs Racecourse, Epsom, Surrey, England. The two day festival of horse racing dates back to 1780. Builders of Modern India - Private FDCs

Hi ! In today's Post some nice FDCs for New definitive series prepared by our distinguished member Mr Hemant Kumar Jain of Jabalpur. These are seven covers and the rest three FDCs are under preparation by Mr. Jain.He has also sent the scan of FDC of Spices of India and points out that the size of FDC is not appropriate and it is very difficult to put stamps on the cover for proper cancellation. Earlier some Miniature sheets could not be accomodated on FDCs becuase of their bigger size and many philatelists could not get proper cancellations as the space left on cover was very small. These minor points should be considered by India Post while issuing Miniature sheets of large size. This is all for the Day....Till Next Post.....Have a Nice Time !....

Wonders of America....

Pane of 40 stamps issued in 2005 that depicts forty of the most remarkable places, structures, plants, and animals in America. The United States is a land of Superlatives, rich in natural and man - made wonders !

Hi ! I am going to share here the most magnificent material that I have received from one of my very distinguished members and a veteran philatelist Mr. Hemant V. Kulkarni from Milwaukee, USA. I don't know how to express my gratitude to Mr. Kulkarni who has sent me such a wonderful pane of 40 stamps depicting wonders of America. It was a big surprise for me when I opened the big envelope I found a complete sheet on all superlatives of America, issued in 2005......What a wonderful gift he has sent to me with lot of best wishes....I am overwheled to see...the finest item for my Tourism Collection.......I never dreamt of them but surprisingly these are in my hands.... It's not 1.....2.....3.....4......5...or 10 it is..... 40 in all...making me very happy ......which I am going to share with all of you here....As the number is big I will write about 4 stamps each day but first of all I am going to share two stamps on this pane related with Rainbow on this magnificent sheet of 40 self - sticking stamps.....Any philatelist will be thrilled to get it....I am not only thrilled but also deeply moved to get them in my collection as besides nice pictures of famous tourist attractions featured on these stamps, this sheetlet carries the warmth and best wishes of a Stamp Lover which have been sent through these nice philatelic items so these stamps means a lot to me and are so precious for my collection........Here is a mail from him which he sent to me few days back expressing his love for Rainbow Stamp News that recently won a Silver Bronze Medal in Hong Kong 2009 stamp exhibition !

Congratulations are in order!

Coincidentally I read your e-mail after coming home from the post office and upon mailing a pane (as we call it here for a sheetlet) of 40 different US commemorative mint stamps titled 'Wonders Of America' instead of 'Greetings from America' -as promised earlier. This substitution is in vibrant colours (each described behind the stamps) & very much admired by philatelists. Also, I've used three 4xdifferent stamps (total 12) on the mailing envelope that were specially issued by USPS in 1976 on the occasion of America's bicentennial year celebration. I only hope, it reaches you safely -not a reflection to look down on the honesty of mail carriers but a matter of concern nonetheless (past experience). Please acknowledge upon its receipt.

Again, couldn't be more happier for you on the honour bestowed!

Hemant V Kulkarni, Milwaukee , USA

I hope all of you would like reading details about wonders of America which I shall continue in my forthcoming Posts....This is all for the day .....Till Next Post ....Have a wonderful Time !....

It's a big envelope that some portion is left..in scan..

More Rainbows in my collection.....

The text about each stamp is printed on backside of the stamp which are self- sticking.

WAYS TO GET AWARD IN EXHIBITIONS

Stamp collectors collect stamps to get the pleasure of collecting and procuring it by physical and mental efforts by way of searching related philatelic material, knocking at doors of different philatelic friends and dealers, pen friends, visiting exhibitions, reading about the subject on which they collect etc. i.e. they put all sorts of efforts, energy, involving search and research on the subject and the material. After doing so much of regular efforts when a material is procured, it adds to the pleasure of getting and preserving it. This may take years together to get and preserve such collection. Further, when displayed in exhibition and the efforts are recognized genuinely and suitably; the pleasure reaches sky and gives a satisfaction which is ultimate goal of philately and philatelist.

But, I am afraid, there are several other means to get satisfaction, if it comes through getting awards at exhibitions only because awards are not only achieved but procured, favored, managed and purchased too. May be my above lines are pinching and a few may not even digest it but this is true and absolutely true.

Exhibitions and shows are organized to exhibit and recognize the collections, the efforts made by philatelists and to appreciate their efforts. But exhibitions are not for those who procure the material without putting efforts in it. Money can get you complete and well displayed collections but this is not philately. Philately is ones total involvement in procuring, collecting material, making, building and shaping of collection.

Regarding exhibitions and the awards given there in, my personal feeling is that 50% of the results are prejudiced / unjustified. Either the jury knows the exhibitor or the jury is influenced or the jury is fed or the jury has limitations.

My first question is whether the collection displayed genuinely of the exhibitor or belongs to some one else? Belonging to some one else means is that it is hired one and displayed in the name of exhibitor where as it is collection of some one else? I have seen dealers preparing exhibits of their own or on demand and sell it at good prices. These exhibits are displayed in the name of buyer and get awards. On payment, dealers too use their contacts to see that the exhibitor gets awards. I mean they play the role of an agent. Dealers or some philatelists also give their collections on hire basis only for the purpose of display and winning awards.

Parents displaying in the name of their children when the children do not know even ABC of the collection. Helping children in building collection and exhibits is appreciable but doing everything of their own and getting awards in the name of child is very bad and is detrimental for the development of this hobby.

Making relation and influencing jury is one of the best ways to get better awards but this is difficult to check.

Well, its up to the exhibitor to decide whether he loves philately or he loves awards which certainly hurt some genuine exhibitor who fails to get genuine award because of this practice.

I appeal to the philatelists to be genuine exhibitor if they want to enjoy philately genuinely.

New Stamps by Canada Post...

Date of Issue - 15 May 2009

Hi ! In today's post, here is a beautiful se-tenant pair on Canadian horse and the Newfoundland Pony issued by Canada Post on 15 May 2009. Both species are recognized for their strength, and, despite their small statures, they are known to endure harsh environments. One stamp features a Canadian Horse peering from the left, overlooking a gold-coloured silhouette of a horse-drawn carriage and a sepia-coloured landscape representing its origins, Quebec’s colourful autumn meadows. The other in the se-tenant pair features a pony, trotting from the right onto a snow-covered landscape showing an emerging lighthouse in the background as well as a gold-coloured silhouette of a pony ploughing the land. When placed side by side, the carriage and the plough meet on the stamps, blending into one image. The faint and subtle backgrounds suggest the origins of the two creatures, and the two different seasons remind that these horses and ponies were relied on year round. I must say the designs of both the stamps have been shown together with great skill used by the designer of the se-tenant pair of stamps . it's a beautiful set of stamps on the smartest creatures of the world. Just magnificent and a very collectible item for all ! Those collecting on horses would find these stamps really wonderful and would love to have them in their collection. This is all for Today...Till Next Post....... Have a Nice Time !

The Canadian Horse and the Newfoundland Pony
The first stamp features a Canadian Horse—a strong, sturdy creature with royal lineage and a long presence in Canada. In 1665, the King of France sent several shipments of horses to the colony of New France. Straight from the King’s royal stables, these Norman and Breton steeds were of mixed origin and included Arabian, Barb and Andalusian stock. Since they developed in isolation from other breeds, these horses eventually merged into a breed of their own, now recognized as the Canadian Horse.

Because of its resilience in the face of harsh weather conditions, the Canadian Horse outworked and outlived larger breeds of horses—a feat that earned it the nickname, “The Little Iron Horse.” Though threatened with extinction in the late 19th century, efforts were made to preserve the breed. In 2002, the Government of Canada honoured the Little Iron Horse’s legacy by declaring it the national horse of Canada.

A Newfoundland Pony, historically considered the all-purpose pony, trots onto the second stamp. This pony’s presence in Canada dates pack to the 17th and 18th centuries, when English settlers to New Founde Land brought along many breeds of ponies to help out on the rugged terrain. These hardy creatures adapted to the harsh climate of the North Atlantic, and over time, they interbred and merged into a common breed, now recognized as the Newfoundland Pony.
Since the onset of modern technology, which took over the jobs once performed by the ponies, their populations have plummeted drastically. To protect this historic creature, the Newfoundland Government declared it a Heritage Animal in 1997.Both species are also celebrated for their personable, sociable and intelligent personalities.

The Simpsons
The Simpsons is an American animated television sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series is a satirical parody of a middle class American lifestyle epitomized by its eponymous family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield, and lampoons American culture, society and television, and many aspects of the human condition. The family was conceived by Groening shortly before a pitch for a series of animated shorts with the producer James L. Brooks. Groening created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after members of his own family, substituting Bart for his own name. The shorts became a part of The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. After a three-season run, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show and was an early hit for Fox, becoming the first Fox series to land in the Top 30 ratings in a season (1989–1990). Since its debut on December 17, 1989 the show has broadcast 441 episodes and the twentieth season began airing on September 28, 2008.The Simpsons Movie, a feature-length film, was released in theaters worldwide on July 26 and July 27, 2007.The Simpsons has won dozens of awards since it debuted as a series, including 24 Primetime Emmy Awards, 26 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award.
