 Mysore Betel Leaf : 20 March 2022 : Bangalore


Mysuru betel leaf is being cultivated from the period of Maharajas of Mysuru in palace gardens as well as in villages surrounding Mysuru taluk. These leaves are heart shaped and texture of the leaves is very smooth. The presence of black clay soil with moderate rainfall and temperature makes Mysuru betel leaf unique to that particular locality. The Government of India has granted GI Tag No. 34 to Mysuru Betel Leaf on 30th January 2006.


Ganjifa Cards : 20 March 2022 : Bangalore






Traditionally hand-painted by artisans, Ganjifa cards of Mysuru hold historical importance besides holding aesthetic and artistic value. This unique fine art form blends the exquisite art of miniature painting and craft, with cards typically based on epic themes giving them an exclusive look and feel. The artistic skill of this traditional craft is seen in its adoption of designs with minute details. These cards arc made in different sizes and shapes. The epic Ramayana has 28 to 1008 cards whereas Dasavatara has 120 cards. The Govt of India has granted GI Tag No. 60 to Ganjifa Cards on 28 March 2008.

Karnataka Bronzeware : 20 March 2022 : Bangalore






The craft is practiced in Bengaluru, Kolar, Chitradurga and Mandya districts of Karnataka. Religious idols; temple bells, vessels, lamps and other ritual wares are cast in bronze. This craft is an amalgamation of art and science in creating poetic rendering of gods. The craftsman who makes the images in bronze are known as stapathies. The uniqueness of Karnataka Bronzeware was recognized and granted Geographical Indication in the year 2006 by Government of India under GJ indication no. 62.

Prof. Hattangadi Shashtdhar Bhat (1921-2010) is regarded as the Doyen of Indian Urology who had laid the foundation for growth and development of urology in India. This special cover is released in grateful remembrance of his contributions, during the decennial year of Department of Urology, Kasturba Medica I College. Mangaluru.

I am just overwhelmed to see this lovely cover and card as it was so kindly sent by Kristina on 22.02 2022 for my collection. Thank you so much Kristina as usual your cover does not have the sender's address so I am not able to send you any cover form India. Heroes of the Covid Pandemic

Royal Mail will issue a set of 8 stamps to commemorate the Heroes of COVID Pandemic on 23 March 2022. The postcards with the same stamp designs will also be issued.


In Spring 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Royal Mail Chief Executive, Simon Thompson launched a special stamp design competition. School children from across the UK were invited to design a postage stamp featuring their own hero or heroes of the Covid pandemic. The response was unprecedented, with surplus 600,000 children taking part.

With over a world record-breaking 600,000 entries, Royal Mail carefully selected 120 regional finalists. From this, a special panel of judges, including the Prime Minister, picked 24 regional winners. The final eight winning designs, were personally selected by HRH The Prince of Wales, with the finished stamps approved by HM The Queen.

New Special Covers from Karnataka



Sri Vadiraja Theertharu : 21 January 2022 : Bangalore


 Special Cover - KTK/006/2022 - Sri Vadiraja Theertharu.

 

SRI VADIRAJA THEERTHA (1480-1600 AD), a luminary in the Dwaita Siddhanta, occupies an exalted position in the Haridasa Parampare. Universally heralded as a great saint, he was not only a renowned scholar but an outstanding writer, poet, traveller, musician and a mystic. His composition  "Yuktimallika" is considered as a literary masterpiece. He also toured the entire country twice and has documented all the pilgrimage centers and their greatness in a travelogue called "Theertha Prabhandha". As a pontiff of Sodhe Mutt, he established the Paryaya system of worship. His phenomenal contribution to the world of music, philosophy, spirituality and devotional literature in Sanskrit and Kannada is a standing testament to his genius and his matchless legacy.

2.   Special Cover - KTK/013/2022 - Chamarajanagar Turmeric (ODOP).

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is the main spice crop of Chamarajanagar District. Chamarajanagar District falls under southern dry agro climate zone-tv of Karnataka. 'Chamarajanagar Local' a variety of Turmeric which is having more curcumin content acts as Anti-inflammatory and Strong Antioxidant. Turmeric has been declared as the main crop of Chamarajanagar District under 'One District One Product' scheme.

3.  Special Cover – KTK/011/2022 – Nugu Dam.

Nugu Dam is located in Beervalu village, Saragur in H D Kote Taluk in H D Kote taluk of Mysuru District. The dam is constructed across river Nugu in Cauvery basin. The Major portion of water of this reservoir is supplied to Nanjangud Taluk. The reservoir was built to serve the purpose of irrigation and hydroelectricity generation. The construction of the dam was started in the year 1956-57 and was completed in the year 1959. The dam was built under the supervision of Sir M Visvesvaraya. Nugu Lift Irrigation project was taken up in the year 2019-20.

GI Tag Special Cover - KTK-007-2022 - Navalgund Durries

 

Navalgund Durries, a traditional carpet made out of Cotton are Geographically Tagged in India. (GI Tag No. 61). These are available in Geometric and Peacock designs in three categories. Dumas are normally woven on horizontal ground loom whereas only these Navalgund Durries are hand woven on primitive vertical loom. Considering the legacy of Design, quality and color, GI Tag has been granted under Handicraft category.

Here is a beautiful se-tenant pair of stamps issued by Serbia Post to commemorate  International Women's Day 2022.The theme of 2022 International Women’s Day is “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

International Women’s Day is an international day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women. It was first celebrated in the United States on 28 February 1909, but the following year, at the first International Conference of Women in Copenhagen, at the initiative of Clara Zetkin, it was decided to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, in memory of the protests of female workers in the textile industry held in New York in 1857.

As International Women’s Day, 8 March was first officially celebrated in 1911 by more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The first celebration of Women’s Day in Serbia was organised in Belgrade in 1914.

In the early 1970s, the United Nations officially declared 8 March International Women’s Day, and today it is celebrated around the world, and in more than 55 countries it is an official national holiday.
