Easter Eggs

Date of Issue : 3 March 2016

Easter eggs, also called Paschal eggs, are decorated eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime. As such, Easter eggs are common during the season of Eastertide (Easter season). The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as chocolate. Although eggs, in general, were a traditional symbol of fertility and rebirth, in Christianity, for the celebration of Eastertide, Easter eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus: though an egg appears to be like the stone of a tomb, a bird hatches from it with life; similarly, the Easter egg, for Christians, is a reminder that Jesus rose from the grave, and that those who believe will also experience eternal life. The Christian custom of the Easter egg can be traced to early Christians of Mesopotamia.

New stamp on Einstein..

100 Years of   Einstein's Theory of Relativity

Date of Issue : 20 March 2016

Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, is most famous by his theory of relativity by which he introduced a revolution to modern physics was commemorated by a new special commemorative stamp by Croatia Post  on 20th March 2016.

General theory of relativity is a geometric theory that suggests that the presence of mass and energy “curves” space-time (physical concept that fuses space and time dimensions in one matter), and curvature impacts the way of free particles. The theory of relativity is named this way because according to it absolute greatnesses do not exist rather everything is relation to one another, and consists of two scientifically theories in the physics field: special relativity and general relativity.
One hundred years after Einstein’s General theory of relativity, in February 2016, scientists from Columbia University (New York) confirmed the existence of gravitational waves. This revelation confirmed Einstein’s final unconfirmed theory according to which gravitational waves move at the speed of light in a vacuum and have deviation in space. Evidence that gravitational waves exist proves Einstein’s theory that the term space-time is not emptiness but yet four ‒ dimensional “fabric” that could be stretched in cases in which objects pass through it.

"Ecology in Europe - Think Green"

Date of Issue : 30 March 2016

Here is a set of new stamps to be issued by Gibraltar Post on 30th March on common Europa 2016 theme  ''Ecology in Europe- Think Green'' The sheetlets of this beautiful set is wonderful.

This year’s theme ‘Think Green’ stamp issue from Gibraltar features two stamps. The first stamp features the winner of the PostEurop “Think Green” joint design competition, a design from Cyprus Post artist, Ms. Doxia Sergidou which was chosen amongst 24 outstanding entries.

“The main purpose was to show that it is in our hands to create a greener planet. Thus, I have placed a hand on the top side of the stamp which basically represents anyone of us, actively replacing the grey colour (the environmental pollution) with the green colour which symbolizes environmental living and hope, and in turn inspire us for a better world. The left side of the stamp represents the polluted side and is painted grey showing us the tremendous disaster caused by the industries, automotive vehicles, power generation and inefficient waste.

It also shows how the human activities are negatively influencing the environment. In contrast on the right side of the stamp, is the green side which show us how using renewable energy resources, acting in a more environmental way and becoming more environmentally aware could positively affect the environment. This will not only have a positive effect in our generation, but it will also help the future ones to co-exist in harmony” adds Ms. Sergidou.

The second design features an illustration of a human brain represented as tree leaves with sketched thoughts of how to think and act ‘green’ created by Giordano Aita.

Beautiful Bridges of Australia on new stamps..

Date of Issue : 15 March 2016

While bridges have been a feature of civilisation for millennia, the development of materials, technologies and engineering knowledge has led to radical shifts in design and construction. Here are new stamps by Australia Post featuring three wonderful bridges of Australia. The most beautiful part of this issue is its Gutter strip which is a wonderful collectible item.
In Australia, the first bridge constructed after European settlement was Richmond Bridge, in Tasmania, the stone structure built with convict labour between 1823 and 1825. This stamp issue focuses not on Australia’s early bridges, but on three bridges from the 20th century.
The five-lane Tasman Bridge depicted on the first stamp, crosses the Derwent River in Hobart, linking the CBD with suburbs in the east. It was completed in 1964 to replace the old Hobart Bridge.

Calamity struck the prestressed concrete-girder bridge in 1975, when a bulk ore carrier delivering cargo to a company in Risdon collided with the bridge’s pylons. A large section of the bridge collapsed onto the vessel, killing seven crew and five motorists. The bridge was rebuilt by 1977.
Gladesville Bridge that is shown on the second stamp extends across the Parramatta River west of central Sydney, linking the suburbs of Huntleys Point and Drummoyne. It is one of a complex of three bridges, the other two being Fig Tree and Tarban Creek Bridges.

 Gutter strip
The Story Bridge that appeared on the third stamp is one of Brisbane’s most notable landmarks, the striking bridge built in the late 1930s and opened in 1940. It was designed by John Bradfield, who also designed Australia’s most famous bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Symbolic bouquet of flowers for women…

Date of Issue : 8 March 2016

The postage stamp issue “Flowers’ Alphabet (II) CU DRAG (With Love)” is dedicated this year to March 8th, the International Women’s Day.

In different regions of the globe the March 8th festivities range from a general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for their economic, political and social achievements. International Women’s Day has had various interpretations over the years. The version that is celebrated now has its origin in 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited all member states to proclaim March 8th as Women’s Rights and World Peace Day.

On this occasion, Romfilatelia offered to all the ladies a symbolic bouquet of flowers. Each of the stamps of this issue depicts a head letter intertwined with a flower, the entire issue forming the words “CU DRAG” (With Love).

The stamp with the face value of Lei 1.20 illustrates the letter C of Chrysanthemum (lat. Chrysanthemum hortorum).

Chrysanthemums, also called autumn daisies, belong to the genus Chrysanthemum, featuring over 30 species of perennials belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Asia and northeastern Europe. The flowers are solitary or grouped in multiple inflorescences. The flowers of the spontaneous species are yellow; even the name chrysanthemum is derived from the Latin words chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower). The cultivated species have a multitude of shapes and colours ranging from white, yellow to various shades of red, green or purple.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 1.40 illustrates the letter U of “Urechelnita”, the common houseleek (lat. Sempervivum tectorum).

Its name does not betray the beauty and utility of the plant. In Europe, it grows in among the spontaneous flora but is also widely cultivated for its ornamental and curative nature. In Romania it’s found in rocky limestone areas, but it’s also cultivated and even preferred for growing on green roofs in some rural areas. Fleshy leaves grow from the stem, thick and very juicy, arranged in a rosette, with sharp peaks. They are used in various household remedies both internally and externally.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 1.60 illustrates the letter D of Dahlia (lat. Dahlia variabilis).

The Dahlia genus includes over 15 species of perennials and is native to Central and North America. Its cultivation in Europe began in the Royal Gardens of Madrid, the director of the gardens naming the plant in honor of the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, who brought the plant from America. The flowers are grouped in inflorescences of various colors. The plant is multiplied by tubers.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 4.50 illustrates the letter R of “Ruscuta de primavara”, yellow pheasant’s eye (lat. Adonis vernalis).

The species grows in Europe and Asia; in our country it can be found on steep hills, in pastures and sunny hayfields, from the plains to the mountains. The leaves are deeply divided, like those of dill. The flowers are golden yellow and shiny. It is considered a poisonous plant, but with curative properties for heart disease.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 8 illustrates the letter A of Azalea (lat. Rhododendron japonicum).
Azaleas are a group of shrubs that belong to the genus Rhododendron. Its name derives from the Greek words rhódon (rose) and déndron (tree). The plant is attractive both by size and composition of the flower, which can be simple or with multiple petals, and also by its vivid color tones and shades from dark red or purple to pink and white. The azalea is widespread in regions with mild winters and moderate summers except Africa and South America.

The stamp with the face value of Lei 16 illustrates the letter G of Gladiola (lat. Gladiolus hybridus).

The Gladiolus genus contains over 250 species spread throughout Asia, Europe and South Africa. Gladiolas are related to irises, both having an elongated shaft sharpen toward the peak, in the form of a sword. Even its name is derived from the Latin word for sword, gladius. Its flowers grow in the form of a blade, with a wide range of colors.

Romfilatelia thanks The Romanian Academy Institute of Biology for the documentary support offered in the creation of this postage stamp issue.

New Easter Stamp

Date of Issue : 4 March 2016
Easter is celebrated around the world in a surprising variety of ways – with traditions like chocolate bunnies, wooden rattles, cod fish, and bonfires. In keeping with its traditions, Magyar Posta is celebrating Easter by issuing a definitive postage stamp. At the centre of the spring-welcoming, trailing floral, calligraphic design of the stamp is the Hungarian word for Easter “Húsvét”.

Easter is pre-eminent among high days and holidays as it both welcomes the arrival of spring and is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ in the Christian world. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds laid their clothes and palm branches on the ground to welcome the Saviour, and today in Hungarian churches branches of pussy willow are blessed in remembrance of this.
The lambis another ancient symbol of Easter whose origin is also to be found in the Bible. Yet the Easter lamb is closely associated with the awakening of nature as this is the lambing season bringing new life to the world.
When Lent ends, winter also comes to a close, thus Easter is also a celebration of the rebirth of nature. As the days grow warmer, nature awakes. The first flowers push through the ground and soon the boughs of the trees are covered in blossom, bidding farewell to the bareness of winter as verdure returns to the world. The decoration of churches with flowers and branches on the Holy Saturday morning for Easter likewise symbolises the rebirth of nature.
