British Design Classics

This first day cover for Royal Mail’s “British Design Classics” stamp issue has been designed by Biswanath Chakrabarti. The exclusive painting is by Tapas Majumder. It features Bletchley Park Post Office with the Toy Museum in the background. They both host their own displays of design classics. At the time the items featured on the stamps were designed Bletchley Park’s role as an ultra secret code breaking was yet to be decided or still a closely guarded secret. But without the work undertaken there it is unlikely we would be looking back on them today. The Phone Box cancel was chosen because Bletchley Park Post Office has its own widely photographed red phone box, a later version than the K2 on the stamp, but nonetheless a Bletchley Park icon. Spitfires still fly over Bletchley Park and Mini’s drive around the roads with signs left over from the 60’s. Off duty code breakers probably enjoyed a good read of a ‘Penguin’ by Anglepoise light. Many would have come across London by Tube and red bus. But they all kept the secret long after Concorde, mini skirts and plastic chairs were everyday items.
