200th Birth Anniversary of Louis Braille

Hi! The 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the Braille system of writing for the blind and low-vision community was celebrated on 4th January all over the world. To comemorate this day several countries have issued commemorative stamps on Louis Braille.Louise Braille, who was born on 4 January 1809, invented the Braille system of writing before he had reached the age of 20 – a system that uses a combination of six raised dots to make letters, words and numbers. While it was well received at a World Exhibition in Germany in 1851, it was not widely used until 1918.Now used worldwide, the Braille writing system is extremely significant as a means of educating blind and low-vision communities. Special prepaid envelope by Australia

A nice special prepaid envelope issued by Australia Post to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the Braille system of writing for the blind and low-vision community.This special envelope features the phrase “200 Years: Louis Braille” in both the written word and in Braille. Another feature is the use of colours that vision impaired people find easiest to read. The envelope was launched at the Vision Australia annual general meeting, held at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney on Friday 28 November.This special envelope features the phrase “200 Years: Louis Braille” in both the written word and in Braille. First Booklet in Braille Script

Uttarakhand Circle of India Post released a stamp booklet to commemorate bicentenary of birth of Louis Braille on January 4, 2009. This is the only booklet in the world with Hindi inscription in Braille script. The booklet produced in the quantity of 500 is priced at Rs 50.



The booklet is inscribed with the slogan "Vidya Sarvasya Bhushnam" both in Devnagri and Braille script. The booklet was printed at Central Braille Press, Dehradun. This is the world's first ever booklet printed in Hindi Braille. Earlier Canada Post printed a booklet with English Braille inscriptions in April 2008.World's first Information Sheet in Braille (issued for the Calcutta Blind School stamp) was also printed at Central Braille Press Dehradun.
