Romare Bearden art work on stamps..

US art

Date of Issue : 28 September 2011

US Postal Service issued a set of four on 28 September featuring art work of renowned artist Romare Bearden .

Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was one of the 20th century's most distinguished American artists. His art has been praised for depicting the complexities of African-American experience while addressing universal themes, and is in the permanent collections of major museums across the nation. Though he created works in many media, he is particularly celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to collage. Using various materials, including cut papers, foil, and fabrics, he transformed collage into a forceful means of expression with mainstream appeal.

Four collages by Bearden, have been features on the Romare Bearden (Forever) stamp sheet.

US art
Conjunction (1971) is a large work showing a Southern social scene, reflecting Bearden's recollections of his early childhood. The work celebrates the human activity of connecting through touch and conversation, and pays homage to the Southern quilt-making tradition suggested by the fabrics of the women's brightly patterned dresses.

Odysseus: Poseidon, The Sea God—Enemy of Odysseus (1977) is one of many images by Bearden based on literary sources. Poseidon was the archenemy of Odysseus in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey; his image here reveals Bearden's deep exploration of the human condition.

US art

Prevalence of Ritual: Conjur Woman is one of a series of important collages Bearden made in 1964. The power and dignity of the black woman was a central theme in his work, and the spiritual and mysterious "conjur" woman was a recurring subject.

US art

Falling Star (1979) juxtaposes the ordinary, a domestic interior, with the marvelous, as seen through its windows. Bearden uses layers of meaning in this work, addressing universal human experience.

Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, but grew up in New York City. His parents had hoped he would study medicine, but he ultimately earned a degree in education in 1935. For many years, he worked as a caseworker with the New York City Department of Social Services and painted in the evenings, making an ever-expanding study of world art. He wrote lyrics for songs, including the hit "Seabreeze," and designed album covers, costumes, and stage sets. He was also a respected scholar and writer. In 1969, Bearden's income as an artist finally allowed him to leave his day job.

Franz Liszt was born on October 22, 1811, in the village of Doborján  in Sopron County, in the Kingdom of Hungary.

Liszt became renowned throughout Europe during the nineteenth century for his virtuosic skill as a pianist. He was said by his contemporaries to have been the most technically advanced pianist of his age and perhaps the greatest pianist of all time. He was also a well-known composer, piano teacher, and conductor who contributed significantly to the modern development of the art. He was a benefactor to other composers, including Richard Wagners, Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg and Alexander Borodin.

As a composer, Liszt was one of the most prominent representatives of the "Neudeutsche Schule" ("New German School"). He left behind an extensive and diverse body of work in which he influenced his forward-looking contemporaries and anticipated some 20th-century ideas and trends. Some of his most notable contributions were the invention of the symphonic poem, developing the concept of thematic transformation as part of his experiments in musical form and making radical departures in harmony.

LESS KNOWN FACT FOR JAINISM COLLECTORS…

BOMBAY UNIVERSITY STAMP

                                                       - Sudhir Jain

Most of the Jainism theme collectors may not know that stamp issued on 31st Dec.1957 on the occasion of centenary of Bombay University is related to JAINISM theme. Historical and architectural Rajabai Tower is depicted on this stamp.

1 Bombay University Stamp

Rajabai Clock Tower is among one of the most cherished and outstanding landmarks of Mumbai. It is situated near Church gate Railway Station in the campus of Bombay University. It houses the library of the University and has some of the brilliant stained glass windows in
Asia. It was named after Rajabai who was a religious Jain lady. She was blind. Her son Premchand Roychand Jain was a cotton broker who founded the Bombay Stock Exchange. Her mother being blind and staunch follower of Jainism, had to eat her dinner before sunset. The bells of Rajabai tower helped her know the time.

2 Rajabai Clock Tower

                                                Rajabai Clock Tower

Premchand Roychand started construction of this tower in the year 1869.It was designed by an English architect Sir Gilbert Scott on the lines of famous Big Ben clock tower of London.  Presenting a fusion of Venetian and Gothic styles of architecture, Rajabai Tower is constructed out of Kurla stone. The total cost of construction came to Rs. 2 lakhs which was a princely sum in those days. It was completed in the year 1878. This 280 feet high tower was at that time the tallest building in Bombay.

3 Rajabai-tower-under-construction

Rajabai Clock Tower (under construction)

Through the sound of bell of this tower, Rajabai  didn't require anyone's help to know the time and she could herself take her dinner before sunset. . In the earlier times, it played the tunes of 'Rule Britannia', 'God Save the King' and 'A Handel Symphony', amongst the
sixteen tunes that changed four times a day. However, currently plays only 'Big Ben’ after every fifteen minutes.
