3D architecture stamps

“Netherlands Institute of Architecture has teamed up with the Dutch postal service to create a set of stamps that, when held up in front of your webcam, display 3D models of five unbuilt works by Dutch architecture offices. ”

Augmented Reality Stamps

The collaboration between the TNT and NAI has resulted in an unusual project – a series of postage stamps. What’s special about these stamps is that they integrate Augmented Reality (AR). You can hold up the stamps in front of a webcam and see the buildings in 3D. This AR app works through a website www.toekomstinbeweging.nl (Dutch only). The project also demonstrates that cutting edge media technology can even fit onto something as small as a postage stamp!

The Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year dates from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Because of cyclical lunar dating, the first day of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. On the Chinese calendar, 2011 is Lunar Year 4709.On the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on Thursday, February 3, 2011 — The Year of the Rabbit. If you were born in 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, or 2011 - you were born under the sign of the rabbit.

Private Stamp Booklets…

The   so called 'Booklets' in India, mostly of which are  prepared and printed by unauthorized private individuals, primarily to flatten their own purse, rather than promotion of philately in particular. The unsuspected collectors who buy these 'Trash' items and put them in their collections ultimately land up absolutely frustrated when they find their collections are downgraded mainly for inclusion of these undesirable items (of no postal connections or approval). Instead of being appreciated by the members of jury these poor collectors pay highly for no fault of them. For all practical purposes what these Booklets (or should I say, mere wrappers ?) are created for ? It is to be kept in mind that only valid and official postal items are acceptable in accredited philatelic shows. Only exceptions are perhaps, Patriotic cards and other items of historical value. The Patriotic cards which had gone through the mails are Postal History items and therefore, not only acceptable but highly desirable.

Falkland Islands : Wildlife

Date of Issue : 30 May 2011

The Falkland Islands Post  issued  a set of 4 WWF Southern sea lion stamps.

Sea lions are resident in the Falklands . Numbers have declined dramatically since the 1930's when the Falklands held a large proportion of the world's population of Southern sea lion.

The Southern sea lion (Otaria flavescens) is perhaps the archetypal sea lion in appearance. Males have a very large head with a well developed lion-like mane, making them the most lionesque of the eared seals.  Females are smaller and lighter in colour, varying from buff to light grey-brown. Pups are born black or dark brown before moulting to a more chocolate colour. All sea lions look very dark when wet.

Southern sea lions frequently feed in kelp beds and often at night. They sometimes prey on penguins, but their main food is octopus, squid, lobster krill and fish caught reasonably close to the shore.

New Stamps from Sri Lanka…

 Srilanka 2011 New Issue Page - 4

Date of Issue : 15 May 2011

Sri Lanka Post issued a set of four stamps and MS on 15 May 2011 to commemorate famous Vesak festival commonly known as Buddha’s Birthday.

Vesak

Vesak is an annual public holiday observed traditionally by practicing Buddhists in South Asian and South East Asian countries like Nepal, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Indonesia, Pakistan and India. Sometimes informally called “Buddha’s birthday,” it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment Nirvana, and passing (Parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha.

In Sri Lanka the Vesak Festival is celebrated as a religious and a cultural festival in Sri Lanka on the full moon of the month of May, for two days.

During these two days, the selling of alcohol and flesh is prohibited by government decree. As a symbolic act of liberation, birds, insects and animals are released in huge numbers.

Celebrations include various religious and alms giving activities. Electrically lit pandols called toranas are erected in various locations in Colombo and elsewhere, most sponsored by donors, religious societies and welfare groups. Each pandol illustrates a story from the 550 Jataka Katha or the 550 Past Life Stories of the Buddha.

In addition, colourful lanterns called Vesak koodu are hung along streets and in front of homes. They signify the light of the Buddha, Dharma and the Sangha. Many devout Buddhists wear simple white dresses on Vesak Day and spend the whole day in temples with renewed determination to observe the observance of the Eight Precepts of Buddhism.

Vesak celebration also means making special efforts to bring happiness to the people in more straightened circumstances. Food stalls set up by Buddhist devotees called dansälas provide free food and drinks to passersby. Groups of people from various community organisations, businesses and government departments sing bhakti geet or Buddhist devotional songs. Colombo experiences a massive influx of public from all parts of the country during this week.

New Zodiac sign stamp from Canada …

Screenshot_1

Date of Issue : 22 June 2011

In the months of April, May and June, Canada Post has launched three more Signs of the Zodiac stamp issues, each one on the day in which each particular constellation takes its place of prominence in the zodiac calendar. The recent one is to be issued on June 22 featuring Cancer, the crab. Gemini, Aeries and Taurus signs have already appeared on the stamps. A souvenir sheet is issued featuring four Zodiac signs.

A Stamp booklet of 10 stamps is also issued on Cancer sign.

Signs of the Zodiac: Cancer, the crab

Cancer is the fourth astrological sign in the zodiac. A water sign ruled by the changeable moon, the qualities of the Cancer personality are the least decisive of all of the signs of the signs of the zodiac. The strongest instincts in those born under this very emotional and highly dramatic sign are an intense home-loving nature and the need to seek a refuge from the stresses in life.

While not anti-social, Cancer is one of the most happily solitary signs. Cancers can appear tough and uncompromising. They need to balance their desire to be outgoing with their natural reserve. They have an air of purposefulness, a philosophical nature and frequently inspire others. Cancer individuals often possess considerable literary, artistic or oratorical talent—and many are drawn to the stage. They are also overly emotional; they cling to idealistic fantasies and while they give the impression that they are down to earth, they are often fascinated by the occult and tend to be more open to psychic influence than most. Cancers have a retentive memory of emotional events and tend to avoid the present, preferring to live in the past via memory and in the future through imagination.

New stamp on 50th anniversary of Amnesty International..

amnesty

Date of Issue : 9 June 2011

German Post issued a postage  stamp on 9th June 2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International organization.

Amnesty International (commonly known as Amnesty and AI) is an international non-governmental organization whose stated mission is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated."

Following a publication of Peter Benenson's article "The Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer 28 May 1961, Amnesty was founded in London the same year. Amnesty draws attention to human rights abuses and campaigns for compliance with international laws and standards. It works to mobilize public opinion to put pressure on governments that let abuse take place. The organization was awarded the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize for its "campaign against torture" and the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights in 1978.

Norway and Luxembourg Post have also issued this year commemorative stamps on 50 years of Amnesty International.
