Chauri Chaura….4 February 1922

cover

Chauri Chaura is a town near Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The town is famous for an event that took place 4 February 1922 during British rule when a police chowki ( (station) was set on fire by angry citizens, killing 23 policemen inside.

The incident

On February 4, 1922, approximately two thousand protesters gathered to picket the liquor shop at the local market in Chauri Chaura. Armed police were dispatched to control the situation while the crowd marched toward the market and started shouting anti-government slogans. In an attempt to frighten and disperse the crowd, the police fired warning shots into the air but this only agitated the crowd who began pelting the police with stones. With the situation getting out of control, the sub inspector ordered the police to open fire on the advancing crowd, killing three and wounding several others. Reports vary on the reason for the police retreat with some claiming that the police ran out of ammunition while others claim that fear of the crowd's unexpectedly courageous and angry reaction to the gunfire were the cause but whatever the case, in the ensuing chaos, the heavily outnumbered police fell back to the shelter of the police chowki while the angry mob advanced. Infuriated, the crowd took revenge by setting the chowki ablaze, killing the 23 officers trapped inside.

Aftermath

In response to the police killings the British authorities declared martial law in and around Chauri Chaura. Several raids were conducted and hundreds of people were arrested.

Appalled at the carnage, Gandhi went on a five-day fast as penance for what he perceived as his culpability in the bloodshed. In reflection, Gandhi felt that he had acted too hastily in encouraging people to revolt against the British Raj without sufficiently emphasizing the importance of ahimsa (non-violence) and without adequately training the people to exercise restraint in the face of attack. He decided that the Indian people were ill-prepared and not yet ready to do what was needed to achieve independence. As a direct result of Chauri Chaura he and the Indian National Congress called for an end to the Non-cooperation movement.

From our Readers….

Exhibiting in Non Competitive for more than the Gold

- Jagannath Mani, Bangalore

Winning the gold is the ultimate dream for many exhibitors, but there are still many reasons why we exhibit. May be we want to inspire and educate people through our exhibits, or to show to everybody our collection that we gathered painstakingly over the years. What ever it maybe, exhibiting has many facets that brings the best in every exhibitors.

In consonance with the noble intention to propagate the hobby of stamp collection Karnataka postal circle requested the philatelists to display their exhibits during the postal week “ phila fest” in last October. Since then many of the local schools & colleges in Bangalore are now requesting our Karnataka philately society to display exhibits and the society members to display their collection in various places , along with other exhibits. I too displayed my Exhibit titled “ The Images of Summer Olympics” and their was huge response from the visitors and the students.

Apparently, exhibiting in non-competitive level brings a different kind of joy and fulfillment. It may be wonderful to receive medals, certificates and other special Prizes......., but if you exhibit for the sake of others and  encourage more philatelist to try exhibiting their collection, the satisfaction we get is more than the gold.

Henri Pequet - Pilot of First Airmail Flight

La Poste will issue a stamp on  Henri Péquet on 18.02.2011

On February 18, 1911, French pilot Henri Pequet (1888-1974) carried the official airmail; a sack with about 6,000 cards and letters on his Humber biplane. The plane flew a distance of five miles, from an Allahabad polo field, over the Yamuna River, to Naini. All mails were marked with a large magenta cachet showing a plane within a double lined circle, inscribed “First Aerial Post — 1911 — U.P. Exhibition Allahabad“.

Pequet was in India flying demonstration flights for the United Provinces Exhibition in Allahabad. Walter Windham (1868-1942), a British aviation pioneer, organized the aerial demonstrations. The event marked the first time airplanes flew in India.

The stamp will be issued in sheet of 40 or in mini sheet of 10.  There is also a print card engraved .
