The Knotted Gun - Non Violence Sculpture

Date of Issue: 2 October 2018

In recognition of this year’s International Day of Non-Violence, the United Nations Postal Administration  issued three new definitive stamps featuring images of the Knotted Gun sculpture, officially known as the Non-Violence sculpture.

The General Assembly, in June 2007, decided to observe the International Day of Non-Violence on 2 October, which is also the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

The Non-Violence sculpture was created in 1980 by the Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd as a tribute to John Lennon. It has become a symbol for peace and non-violence, with more than 30 sculptures placed in strategic locations worldwide, including the UN Headquarters in New York, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, and the Peace Park in Beijing.

The artwork for the 1¢ definitive stamp is an engraving by Martin Mörck of Norway. The € 0,90 and € 2,30 definitive stamps are painted knotted gun sculptures which are part of the Non-Violence Art Project.

The € 0,90 stamp features artwork by Swedish environmental explorer, Johan Ernst Nilson.
The € 2,30 stamp features artwork by English musician, song writer and actor, Ringo Starr of the band The Beatles.
The Non-Violence sculpture is used as a symbol by the Non-Violence Project Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting peace and social change through education, to inspire, motivate and engage young people to understand how to solve conflicts peacefully.
To quote Mahatma Gandhi: “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.”

Festivals of India - Dussehra

Happy Dussehra !

Vijayadashami also known as Dasahara, Dusshera, Dasara, Dussehra or Dashain is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navratri every year. Vijayadashami is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian subcontinent. In the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remem of the aspects of goddess Devi such as Durga or Saraswati. bering goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to help restore dharma. In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymously called Dussehra (also spelled Dasara, Dashahara). In these regions, it marks the end of "Ramlila" and remembers God Rama's victory over the Ravana. Serbia -India Joint Issue

Serbia – India Joint Issue
70 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Date of Issue :15 September 2018

The seventy-year journey of diplomatic relations based on friendship and partnership, characterized by full mutual trust and understanding between Serbia and India, began on 8 December 1948, only a year after the Republic of India became independent, crowning the struggle of Indian people and the teachings of the great Mahatma Gandhi that final victory can be won through non-violent activism, peacefully and without bloodshed.

Following the establishment of diplomatic relations, the Non-Aligned Movement was the forum where the then SFRY and the Republic of India cooperated and worked very closely, becoming important factors of international peace and stability. The words spoken by the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of the visit to Belgrade in 1955. will be remembered: “Distance dividing us vanishes in the meeting of our thoughts and the foundations have been laid for a friendship that will, I believe, be of an enduring nature”.

In the decades that ensued, a series of meetings were held, visits and letters exchanged between the top leaders, contributing to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and position of the two countries on international level. The visit to India by the then Prime Minister and the incumbent President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić to participate at the “Vibrant Gujarat Summit” in January 2017, the official visit by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić in May 2018 as well as the visit by Vice-President of the Republic of India Venkaiah Naidu to Serbia in September 2018, are an expression of unequivocal commitment of the two countries to continue along the lines of intensified bilateral dialogue and strengthening of the overall cooperation. The Republic of Serbia and the Republic of India extended a hand of friendship and solidarity to each other in the most difficult times, while the respect of international law and principles of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states constitute a common ground of the foreign policy of both countries.

Motifs on the stamps: Nikola Tesla, Swami Vivekananda

Expert collaboration: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia
Artistic realization of the stamps: stamp “Nikola Tesla” – MA Boban Savić, academic painter; stamp “Swami Vivekananda” – Indian artist Ms. Gulistaan

Centenary of End of World War I

National Memorial Arboretum (NMA)  Lichfield,Staffordshire

Date of Issue : 21 September 2018

Gibraltar Post issued two miniature sheets to commemorate the Centenary of End of World War I.

The National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) at Lichfield, Staffordshire commemorates and pays tribute to all British, Commonwealth and Allied troops who fought and died in the cause of peace and freedom in both World Wars.
The Rock of Gibraltar War Memorial located at NMA recalls the sacrifice made by Gibraltarian members of the British Armed Forces in both World Wars, and the role played by both the Rock and its civilian  population, particularly in World War II. It is carved out of a 3.5 ton piece of Limestone Rock and is dedicated to the Gibraltarians who paid the ultimate price and whose names are carved in stone on this memorial.
After an inspired visit to the National Memorial Arboretum by Gibraltarian Joe Brugada in August 2014, later assisted by designer Anselmo Torres, the Memorial was commissioned and officially unveiled by HM Government of Gibraltar on the 13th October 2015.

The military hostilities of World War One ended at 11 am on 11th November 1918 but a final diplomatic end of the war was not reached until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. In 1919, Lloyd George of England, Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of France and Woodrow Wilson from the US met to discuss how Germany was to be made to pay for the damage world war one had caused.
Wilson had devised a 14 point plan that he believed would bring stability to Europe.
Open Diplomacy – There should be no secret treaties between powers

Freedom of Navigation – Seas should be free in both peace and war

Free Trade – The barriers to trade between countries such as custom duties should be removed

Multilateral Disarmament – All countries should reduce their armed forces to the lowest possible levels

Colonies – People in European colonies should have a say in their future

Russia – Russia should be allowed to operate whatever government it wanted and that government should be accepted, supported and welcomed.

Belgium – Belgium should be evacuated and restored to the situation before the war.

France – should have Alsace-Lorraine and any lands taken away during the war restored.

Italy – The Italian border should be readjusted according to nationality

National Self-Determination – The national groups in Europe should, wherever possible, be given their independence.

Romania, Montenegro and Serbia – Should be evacuated and Serbia should have an outlet to the sea

Turkey – The people of Turkey should have a say in their future

Poland – Poland should become an independent state with an outlet to the sea.

League of Nations – An assembly of all nations should be formed to protect world peace in the future.

Germany expected a treaty based on these fourteen points. However, negotiations between the ‘big four’ Lloyd George of England, Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of France and Woodrow Wilson of America did not go smoothly. Wilson believed that his fourteen points was the only way to secure everlasting peace. The French however, wanted the defeated nations to be punished severely and believed Wilson’s plan too lenient. Privately Lloyd George sided with Wilson although he was concerned about the threat from Communism, however, the British public, like Clemenceau, wanted Germany punished severely. Lloyd George knew that if he sided with Wilson he would lose the next election.

World Post Day

9 October - World Post Day

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October. The event was declared by the 1969 Universal Postal Congress in Tokyo as a means to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union's (UPU) creation in 1874.

The purpose of World Post Day is to bring awareness to the Post's role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development.

As a result, the UPU's member countries are encouraged to organize their own national activities to celebrate the event, including everything from the introduction or promotion of new postal products and services, to the organization of open days at post offices, mail centres and postal museums.
